The New Girl The Red Line
The engine of Elena’s battered sedan gave one final, pathetic shudder before dying completely in the parking lot of Crestview High.
Elena gripped the steering wheel, letting out a long breath that fogged up the glass. New town. New school. Senior year. She looked out the window at the sprawling brick buildings, feeling like an outsider before she even stepped foot inside. She adjusted the collar of her oversized pastel pink sweater, wishing she could pull the wool right over her head. After everything that had happened at her old school, she just wanted to fly under the radar. She wanted to be invisible.
But at Crestview, flying under the radar was impossible.
"Hey, El! Need a hand with that piece of junk?"
Elena looked up to see Julian Cross jogging across the cracked asphalt toward her. Julian lived next door and had been her absolute lifeline over the summer when her family first moved into the neighborhood. With his messy brown hair, easy smile, and worn leather jacket, he was the definition of a protective bad boy the kind of guy who rode a loud motorcycle and broke curfew, but would still hold the door open for your grandmother.
He leaned against her driver’s side door, his dark eyes crinkling with real warmth as she pushed the heavy door open. "I told you I could have picked you up on my bike this morning, Elena."
"And let my dad see me on the back of a motorcycle on day one? No way," Elena smiled softly, her voice naturally quiet and shy. She stepped out of the car, adjusting her skirt.
Julian reached out, naturally taking her heavy backpack from her shoulders to carry it for her without even asking. His hand lingered against hers for a second too long, his fingers warm and reassuring. "I'm serious, El. This place can be brutal. Stick with me today, okay? I've got your back. Always."
Before she could answer, the shrill roar of a pristine black sports car cut through the morning air. The vehicle tore into the parking lot, intentionally cutting too close to them and screeching into the empty spot right next to Elena’s car.
The door swung open, and Leo Cavallo stepped out. Leo was the school's wealthy, charismatic king but there was a sharp, dangerous edge beneath his perfect smile. He adjusted his expensive watch, his amber eyes locking onto Elena with a predatory intensity that made her breath hitch.
"Well, well. If it isn't the beautiful new neighbor," Leo purred, ignoring Julian entirely as he stepped right into Elena’s personal space. He reached out, his movements smooth and confident, gently tucking a stray piece of her hair behind her ear. His touch was electric, but it sent a strange, uncomfortable shiver down her spine. "I hear we’re in the same AP English class. Let me show you around today, Elena. You shouldn't be wasting your time with the local street trash."
Julian instantly stepped between them, his jaw clenching so tight a muscle ticked in his cheek. He shoved Leo's shoulder back, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. "Back off, Cavallo. She doesn't want you anywhere near her."
Leo didn't even flinch. His smooth smile turned venomous as he looked at Julian. "Careful, Cross. Keep barking, and I’ll have my father buy your entire neighborhood just to evict you."
"Stop it, both of you!" Elena hissed, her face burning bright red as other students started to whisper and stare. She hated the attention. Clutching her binder tightly to her chest, she turned on her heel. "I can walk to class by myself."
She hurried away from them, her head down, desperately trying to escape the heavy tension vibrating between the two boys. But as she rounded the corner near the gym, her eyes fixed entirely on the floor, she accidentally collided head first into a solid chest.
Elena stumbled back, almost slipping on the gravel, but a strong, calloused hand clamped around her forearm, steadying her.
She looked up, and her heart stopped completely.
Dante Alighieri.
He was the guy everyone warned you about. He was the leader of the south side crew a dark, brooding bad boy covered in tattoos, with a reputation for street fighting and a permanent scowl. He was breathtakingly handsome in a devastating, lethal way, with sharp features and eyes as cold and gray as a thunderstorm.
The air between them instantly turned heavy. Elena tried to pull her arm back, but his grip remained firm, his gaze boring into her wide, innocent eyes with absolute hostility.
"Watch where you're going, new girl," Dante growled, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that made her knees feel weak.
"You... you ran into me," Elena retorted, flashing a sudden, unexpected spark of defiance that clearly surprised him.
Dante’s eyes narrowed, searching her face. There was a sudden, suffocating gravity between them an instant, mutual friction that felt dangerously alive. He leaned in closer, his shadow completely engulfing her small frame. "You're Cross's new little friend, aren't you? Let me give you a piece of advice. Stay on your side of the line, or you're going to get hurt."
He let go of her arm, leaving a burning sensation where his fingers had been, and walked away without looking back. Elena stood there, her heart hammering against her ribs, completely unaware of the dark silhouette watching her from the second story window of the school building someone who had been tracking her every move since she arrived in town.
