Prologue
Famous Last Words
Han Seo-yoon had spent seven years building a flawless reputation.
Seven years of chart-topping songs, sold-out concerts, and award-winning performances.
Not a single scandal.
Well, unless you counted that disastrous acting cameo three years ago.
She preferred not to.
“YUNI-ssi, do you ever feel threatened by younger singers?” an interviewer asked.
Seo-yoon smiled sweetly.
“Of course not. There’s room for everyone in the music industry.”
I’m twenty-nine, not ninety.
“And cut!”
Her smile vanished.
“Min-ji, do I look old?”
Her manager sighed. “You look hungry.”
“That too.”
Fortunately, Seo-yoon had something to look forward to: Friday’s Starlight Music Festival.
She would perform When the Stars Come Home, the debut song that made her famous. Seven years later, its notoriously difficult final high note was still her pride and joy.
She had never missed it.
Not once.
“Just rest your voice and stay away from spicy food,” Min-ji warned.
Seo-yoon waved dismissively.
“Please. What’s the worst that could happen?”
As it turned out, quite a lot.
A missed note.
A viral video.
And one particularly annoying bird who was about to become the biggest headache of her career.
