Chapter 1: The Scent of Birch and Steel
The heavy mahogany door of the Alpha’s private study was thick enough to mute the raucous laughter echoing from the main hall below, but it did nothing to block his scent.
Crushed pine, winter rain, and the dark, iron tang of raw Alpha dominance.
I stood near the edge of the heavy oak desk, my fingers tangled in the hem of my emerald silk dress. Outside, the Moonstone Pack was celebrating another successful harvest run. Downstairs, my brother, Silas, had his arm wrapped tightly around Louise’s waist near the hearth, their mate bond glowing with that quiet, settled warmth I had envied for years. Louise—my best friend, my sister in every way that mattered—was laughing at something Silas had whispered in her ear.
And here I was, tucked away in the shadows of her father’s sanctuary, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.
“You shouldn’t be up here, Mia.”
His voice didn’t just carry across the room; it vibrated straight through the floorboards, settling low and hot in my belly. Alpha Damon Salvatore stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, overlooking the pine-forested territory he had ruled alone for twenty-two years. Broad shoulders filled out a tailored charcoal suit, his dark hair silvered faintly at the temples—the only visible mark of time on a man who looked like he could crush a rogue wolf’s skull with a single hand.
“Louise sent me to get the ledger for the pack foundation,” I lied, my voice trembling just enough to betray me.
Damon turned slowly. His amber eyes—darker and far more lethal than his daughter’s—locked onto mine. The sheer pressure of his gaze made my knees go soft. He was forty-two, seasoned, brutally powerful, and the Beta’s daughter had no business looking at him the way I was looking at him right now.
“The ledger is on the second shelf,” Damon said smoothly, stepping toward me. Each step was silent, predator-smooth. “And Louise didn’t send you. She’s currently distracted by your brother.”
He stopped less than a foot away. The heat radiating off his body felt like a furnace in the cool room. Five years. For five agonizing years, ever since I turned fifteen and realized the difference between a girl’s crush and a woman’s obsession, I had watched him from across pack tables, training grounds, and ceremonial fires. He was my father’s closest friend, my brother’s Alpha, and my best friend’s father. He was off-limits in every way pack law and human decency could define.
Yet, every time he walked into a room, my inner wolf sat up, breathless and waiting.
“Mia,” he murmured, his tone dropping an octave into that dangerous, commanding baritone reserved only for things he intended to control. “Look at me.”
I tilted my chin up, refusing to retreat.
Damon lifted his hand. His knuckles were calloused, broad, and terrifyingly warm. Slowly, with a deliberate, maddening patience, his thumb traced the curve of my lower lip, pressing lightly until my mouth parted on a soft, ragged breath. The touch sent a violent jolt of electricity down my spine, pooling low between my thighs.
“You keep looking at me like that at pack dinners,” he growled low, his amber eyes flaring with dark, primal embers. “As if you have any idea what I’d do to you if I stopped remembering who your father is.”
“Then stop remembering,” I whispered, the sheer desperation bursting through my terror. “Please, Alpha.”
A low, rumbling growl vibrated in his broad chest, and his grip shifted from my lip to the back of my neck. His large hand cupped my nape, his fingers tangling in my dark hair, and pulled me flush against the hard wall of his chest. The contact was explosive. My breasts pressed against his suit jacket, and I could feel the ridge of his arousal pressing firmly against my hip.
He wasn’t indifferent. He had never been indifferent.
“You don’t know what you’re asking for,” Damon growled, his lips hovering an inch from mine. His breath smelled of rich bourbon and dark cedar. “You’re twenty years old, Mia. You haven’t even attended a Mate Ball in three years. The Goddess has someone out there for you. A young wolf who can give you a normal life.”
“I don’t want a young wolf,” I gasped, leaning up to press my mouth against the corner of his jaw. He stiffened, a sharp intake of air rattling in his throat. “I’ve never wanted anyone else. You know that. You’ve seen it.”
“I am your Alpha,” he rasped, though his hand tightened in my hair, holding me pinned to him. His wolf was right under the surface, clawing to get out, and the power radiating off him made my pulse wildly erratic. “Your father is my Beta. My daughter is mated to your brother. If I take what you’re offering me, Mia, it will ruin everything.”
“Then let it ruin me,” I begged softly, sliding my hands up his chest, feeling the heavy, thumping rhythm of his heart through the fine fabric of his jacket. “Just once, Damon. Please.”
Hearing his name on my lips hit him like a physical strike. His amber eyes darkened until the gold was completely consumed by black. The restraint he had maintained for five agonizing years snapped in a single, terrifying second.
With a deep, guttural growl, Damon dragged me up against his body, lifting me off my feet as if I weighed nothing, and slammed his mouth down on mine.
The kiss wasn’t gentle. It was possessive, hungry, and brutally dominant. His tongue claimed my mouth with an unyielding force that left me lightheaded, tasting of bourbon and pure, raw need. I let out a desperate whimper, wrapping my legs around his waist, my fingers gripping his shoulders as he pinned me back against the heavy wooden door.
His large hand slid down my back, gripping my thigh, squeezing the soft flesh through the silk of my dress. Every nerve ending in my body ignited. I arched into his touch, completely surrendering to the overwhelming power of the man who ruled my pack—and my heart.
“Gods help me, Mia,” he growled against my mouth, his lips moving down to the exposed column of my neck. He nipped at the sensitive pulse point right above my collarbone, making me gasp and arch higher against him. “If I start, I won’t be able to stop.”
Footsteps echoed in the corridor outside.
Damon froze instantly. His entire body went rigid as iron, his Alpha senses picking up the footsteps long before mine could.
“Dad? Mia?”
It was Louise’s voice, clear and unbothered, coming up the stairs.
The illusion shattered, but the heat remained scorching. Damon slowly set my feet back on the floor, though his hands lingered on my waist, steadying me as my knees threatened to buckle. His breathing was heavy, his chest heaving, his dark eyes locked onto mine with a fierce, possessive fury that made my heart leap.
He stepped back just as I smoothed down my silk dress with trembling hands, trying desperately to catch my breath. Damon reached out, his thumb catching a bit of smeared lipstick on my bottom lip, wiping it away before licking it off his own thumb without taking his eyes off me.
The sheer audacity of the gesture made my core ache.
“We’re in here, Louise,” Damon called out, his voice instantly dropping back into its smooth, commanding tone, as if he hadn’t just had me pressed against the door seconds ago.
The door handles turned, and Louise popped her head in, her bright smile instantly filling the heavy air. “There you guys are! Silas is looking for you, Dad. Rowan wants to review the border patrol reports before the full moon next week.”
Louise looked between her father and me, completely oblivious to the thick, dangerous tension still hanging in the room. “Mia, are you okay? Your face is super flushed.”
“I’m fine,” I squeaked out, taking a subtle step away from Damon’s desk. “Just... it’s warm up here.”
Damon didn’t say a word, but as he adjusted his cuffs and brushed past his daughter toward the hallway, his fingers brushed against mine in the dark—a silent, searing promise that this was far from over.
