Chapter 1
Chapter One: The Girl Who Was Almost Enough
Ariya Sen was nine when she first wondered what it felt like to be someone's favourite person.
Not someone's responsibility.
Not someone's daughter.
Someone's favourite.
She didn't ask anyone that question, of course. Children rarely know how to explain the things that hurt them. They just learn to live around them.
Ariya learned to live around her father's absence, even when he was sitting in the next room.
She learned to smile when other girls talked about their fathers.
And she learned that sometimes, the smallest things could make you jealous of a life you had never lived.
But she had her mother.
Mira loved her in a hundred little ways. She remembered the things Ariya liked, worked to give her things before she even asked, and somehow managed to make an ordinary day feel special.
Ariya loved her for it.
She also worried about her.
Because even as a child, she could see that her mother was tired.
Some children grow up counting the days until they can leave home. Ariya grew up wondering how she could someday give her mother a life in which she no longer had to be so strong.
Back then, Ariya had other dreams, too.
She wanted to dance. To create things. To fill her life with all the little things that made her happy.
Then, after fifth grade, her marks began to improve.
Her family was proud. Her teachers noticed her. And slowly, without anyone asking her to give anything up, the girl who loved creating things began to feel that she had something to prove.
She became good at studying.
Very good.
But nobody told her that being good at something could become a cage when everyone started expecting her to stay that way.
And Ariya, who wanted so badly to make the people she loved happy, didn't know how to disappoint them.
Not yet.
She had no idea that one day, a set of exam results would make her question everything she believed about herself.
But that was years away.
For now, she was still a little girl who danced when nobody watched, loved her mother more than words could explain, and secretly wondered why a father's love seemed so effortless for everyone else.
She didn't know it then, but she was already learning to become everything everyone needed, except the one person she would eventually struggle to recognize.
Herself.
