Scene 1: The Vow (Flashback)
A dimly lit, rain-slicked balcony overlooking the city. DC stands at the railing; his right-hand man, Marcus, is slumped in a chair, wounded.
Marcus: “DC... look at me. This life... it doesn’t end well for people like us. But she’s innocent. She can’t be part of this.”
DC: “You’ve been my brother for fifteen years, Marcus. You don’t even have to ask.”
Marcus: “Promise me. If I don’t make it off this roof... you become her shadow. You protect her, you guide her. You be her Godfather, but keep her away from the blood and the grit.”
DC: (Placing a hand on Marcus’s shoulder) “I give you my word. I’ll raise her as my own. She’ll have the best of everything, and she’ll never know the dark side of this business. I’m her Godfather now. She’s safe.”
Scene 2: The Reality (Present Day)
DC’s expansive home office. Twelve years have passed. Elena is no longer the child in the photographs; she is a confident young woman home from college for the break. DC is pouring a drink, his back turned.
Elena: “You’re still doing that thing, you know.”
DC: (Turning slightly, a small smile playing on his lips) “What thing is that, Elena?”
Elena: “Checking the perimeter before you even say hello to me. You’ve been my ‘protector’ for so long, I think you’ve forgotten I’m not a little girl in a sundress anymore.”
DC: “A promise is a promise. I took an oath to make sure you were always looked after. College hasn’t changed the world out there, Elena. It’s still dangerous.”
Elena: (Walking closer, her eyes fixed on his) “Maybe. But the world feels a lot less dangerous when I’m standing right here. You’ve spent twelve years looking out at the horizon for threats... did you ever bother to look at what was right in front of you?”
DC: (His expression shifts, becoming more guarded) “I see a brilliant woman with a bright future. Exactly what your father wanted.”
Elena: “My father wanted me safe. But I think I want something else entirely. I’ve spent four years away, and every person I met... they weren’t you. They didn’t have your gravity. Do you have any idea how hard it is to move on when your Godfather is the only man who actually matters?”
DC: (Setting the glass down with a heavy click) “Elena... be very careful with where you’re taking this conversation.”
DC is playing a dangerous double game, using charm as a weapon to dismantle the rival family from the inside. This creates a sharp contrast between his cold ambition and the “warmth” he has to fake for his ex-girlfriend, Sophia.
