Chapter 1- Let Us In

Ava and Kemi were on their way to the Halloween party but decided to stop at a few houses to stockpile some candy.

“Kemi, I cannot believe you have us out here trick or treating! We are too grown to be out here!” Ava said, laughing.

“We’re never too grown for fun!” Kemi shouted, as she twirled around in her slutty Nurse costume, sucking on a blow pop. Ava shook her head, giggled and locked arms with Kemi, as they sashayed down the street. At the end of the street, in the cul de sac, sat Old Man Amadi’s house. No kid or adult ever stopped to get candy there. There were old rumors that he murdered his wife and there was never a funeral for her body. Nobody knows where her body is. As they came to the end of the sidewalk, Ava was stepping off into the street, as a red Tahoe came plowing down the street, so fast and so close to Ava, that her white Marilyn Monroe dress blew all the way up and the leaves from the ground flew up around her.

“What the fuck is wrong with you!? You crazy bastard! You almost took my friends foot off!” Kemi screamed in the direction of the truck, waiving her arms wildly through the air. They heard the red Tahoe screech in the distance and saw the brake lights come on.

Ava tugged nervously at Kemi’s folded arms, “Kemi, let’s just go, ok? We need to get to our party anyway. Let’s go, ok?”

“No, this fucker has a problem and I’m going to fix it! He can’t come through here speeding like that! There are kids out here! Plus, he almost took your damn foot off!” Kemi huffed.

The red Tahoe was now stopped a few feet away from them. “Well, get out of the damn truck!” Kemi yelled, with her hands on her hips. The driver’s side door opened and all they could see was the top of his head. As he slowly walked around the truck, they heard something heavy dragging and scraping the ground. They noticed he was wearing a clear mask.

“Listen here, prick! That was NOT a cool Halloween prank! You almost took my friends whole damn foot….” Before Kemi could get another word out, Ava screamed, as the masked man finally came into view, dragging a bloody axe beside him.

Kemi snatched Ava by the hand and shot down the back area of the cul de sac. “Why are you dragging us through the back way!?” Ava screamed, stumbling over twigs and logs, while being pulled by Kemi.

“Do you want to run down the street, so that psycho can easily spot us!? Keep moving!” Kemi yelled over her shoulder. Kemi was jumping over broken logs and ducking low hanging twigs. She ran nine miles a week; this was nothing for her.

By the time they stopped running, Ava looked like she had been beaten. Her hair had fallen out of her pin up, and leaves were stuck in it. The bottom of her white dress was torn a bit, and her knee was scraped and bleeding slightly.

She barely huffed out, “Why are we standing at Old Man Amadi’s house?! I know you don’t expect us to go in there? Look at this house, Kemi! The wood is splintering so badly; this house could fall apart! There’s moss growing all over this house! How do we know, he’s even in there?! The whole house is dark, except this creepy ass porch light!” Ava was standing there, wide eyed, still huffing and puffing, staring at Kemi.

“Ava, this old man is harmless, he’s old! You know we can’t go back up that street! Plus, we need a phone, remember? Both of us left our phones because there were no pockets on our costumes. We’ll go in, use the phone and leave when one of our friends come to get us, ok?” Ava’s eyes darted between the house and the woods they just came out of. She was starting to fidget and regretted not bringing her phone. Her eyes began to water.

Kemi noticed and pulled her friend in for a bear hug. “Calm down Ava, everything’s cool now. We made it here, didn’t we? The old man is harmless, you’ll see.” Kemi knocked quickly on the door and kept one eye on the woods for any movement. Nothing. She knocked again, but louder. As she waited, she took quick glances at Ava. She didn’t look too good, and she was doing that damn fidgeting again. This man had to open the door. She was about to knock again, when he opened the door and peeked one eye out, as he eyed their costumes.

“Ah, yes, trick or treaters! Such big trick or treaters, if I must say!” Old Man Amadi had widened the door. He was standing in a dingy brown robe and flannel bottoms. He was indeed harmless.

“No, actually, we were on our way to a party, but some psycho almost ran…” Before Kemi could finish, Ava butted in.

“Can we come in?” She looked even more nervous and was breathing heavier.

“Oh, my apologies! Sure, you can, such pretty ladies, of course. Come!” Old Man Amadi stepped aside to let them in. As they walked in, the old man stuck his head out and looked towards the woods. He saw the moonlight bounce off the tip of the axe, giving off a slight glint. He gave a signal and the helper left.
