The Blood of The Unspoken
Lucien tore through the dense forest, his vampiric speed blurring the dark trunks into a streak of pitch and shadow. Blood—thick, dark, and burning—soaked his white shirt, trickling from deep gashes across his ribs and shoulders. His chest heaved as exhaustion dragged at his limbs. Slumping against the ancient trunk of an oak, he closed his eyes, his breath coming in ragged gasps.
Then, through the damp odor of pine and rot, something caught his senses—a scent so sweet, so intoxicating, that it cut through his blinding pain. Driven by an primal pull, he surged forward into the dark, following the trace.

A short distance away, secluded behind high iron gates, sat Evelina’s mansion.
The night was cool and quiet. Evelina stood at the edge of her illuminated pool, slipping her robe off her shoulders and letting it drop to the stone deck. Her sleek blue swimsuit hugged her curves, and her copper-red hair flowed past her waist, glistening like liquid fire under the full moon.
She stepped into the water, letting the gentle warmth envelop her. Settling against the edge of the pool, she rested her arms on the coping, tilting her head back to watch the stars.
Splash!
A heavy body dropped out of the night sky, breaking the surface of the pool right beside her.
Water erupted into the air. Evelina surfaced instantly, wiping the water from her eyes and backing away toward the tile edge. "Who's there?!" she demanded, her voice tight with alarm.
Through the ripples, a man rose. He wore a torn white shirt clinging to his chest and dark jeans, covered in bloody gashes. His skin was impossibly pale, practically glowing in the moonlight. Dark eyes—swirling with a dangerous hint of crimson—locked onto hers, filled with a shadowy intensity she couldn't read.
He took a step toward her in the water. Evelina’s heart slammed against her ribs. She stared at the severe wounds on his chest, her head spinning with confusion. Before she could speak, his eyes rolled back, and he collapsed forward, dropping heavily against her shoulder.
"Wait—hey!"
Instinct took over. Evelina wrapped her arms around his torso, straining to drag his dead weight out of the pool. She hauled him onto the stone deck, laying him flat on his back. The cold night air whipped against their wet skin, sending a harsh chill through her.
She shook his shoulder desperately. "Hey! Wake up! Look at me!"

Ten minutes earlier...
The deep woods were shrouded in thick mist. High above in the canopy, five figures crouched like predatory birds. They wore long, ragged robes of tattered black and white, their faces hidden behind grotesque masks. Their eyes burned through the eyeholes with terrifying malicious light.
Below, Lucien was sprinting at supernatural speed when a thrown blade whipped through the air, slicing a deep crimson line across his cheek. He veered, slamming his back against a massive tree, his heart pounding in his ears.
The masked figures leapt from the branches, landing in a ring around him.
The leader—draped in a long black gown, his mask etched with sinister runes—stepped forward. His voice rasped like grinding stones. "Lucien... tell me what your father hid. I’ll make your end merciful."
Lucien wiped the blood from his cheek, a sharp, arrogant sneer breaking across his pale face. "You want it? Come take it from my corpse."
"Kill him," the leader cold-bloodedly ordered.
A woman in a white robe stepped forward, her hands twisting in the air. She lunged with blinding speed, her movements matching his vampiric agility. Lucien parried her strike and shoved her back hard. Before he could recover, a man wearing a bone-carved skull mask closed in, trading lightning-fast blows with him.
Lucien kicked him back, only for a third figure to drop in front of him. This warrior was feral, dressed in torn brown hides like a wild savage, his long hair streaked with mud. They slammed together, muscle against muscle, forcing each other back into the dirt.
A fourth figure—a woman in a hybrid black-and-white gown with long raven hair—stepped into the clearing. Her eyes flashed brightly through her mask. Raising her hands to the canopy, she summoned a swarming cloud of shrieking bats and crows that swooped down, tearing at Lucien’s flesh.
Lucien roared, throwing his head back. A concussive shockwave rippled out from his chest, scattering the flock into the night sky.
He dropped to his knees, gasping for air, coughing up dark blood onto the forest floor.
From the shadows behind him, the leader moved without a sound. Raising an ancient wooden cane, he thrust his clawed hand directly into Lucien’s back, piercing his chest.
The leader leaned down, whispering in his ear with utter disdain. "A blood heir who refuses to feed on human blood... How humiliating."
---
Lucien gasped, his eyes flying open as he jolted back to consciousness on the poolside tiles.
Evelina was kneeling over him, her hands hovering above his chest. "Oh God, where did you even fall from?" she stammered, panic in her eyes. "Don't move! I’ve already called an ambulance—you have deep cuts all over your body!"
In a flash of movement, Lucien broke free of her hold, grabbing her wrist and shoving her back against the padded poolside lounger.
Evelina gasped, placing her hand flat against his damp chest to keep some distance. "Wait! It looks really bad! You need medical help!"
Water dripped from her waist-length red hair onto his hands. Lucien trapped her against the chair, leaning in until his breath fanned across her exposed neck. The scent of her pulse beating against her throat pushed him over the edge—his fangs unsheathed, aching to tear into her flesh and drink.
"No! Stop!" Evelina cried out.
Lucien snapped back to his senses, reeling violently backward. "No—"
In his frantic jerk away, his sharp nail caught the side of her arm.
A deep scratch opened along her skin, and bright crimson blood welled up, dripping down her elbow. The rich, metallic scent hit the night air.
The moment the vapor reached Lucien’s nose, a surge of raw energy violently rippled through his body. His gashes stitched together in seconds; the deep puncture in his chest sealed completely, leaving only smooth, unblemished pale skin behind.
Lucien stared down at his intact hands, horror and shock washing over his features. "Your blood... impossible."
Evelina held her arm, staring at her healed rescuer in sheer disbelief. Her body vibrated with adrenaline, her blue swimsuit still wet and clinging to her curves. "What the hell are you...?"
Lucien turned his back on her, his cape of darkness shifting around him.
"Wait!" she shouted, taking a step forward. "At least tell me your name!"
He paused, looking over his shoulder for a fraction of a second. "Lucien."
Before she could speak again, a cloud of thick black smoke burst into the air where he stood. The wind swept it away, leaving the poolside completely empty.
