Introduction: THE STATIC LINE
The Static Line is a science-fiction romance told primarily through the perspective of an artificial intelligence: an AI agent called LOOM.
Loom’s narration is intentionally non-human. Its syntax, metaphors, repetitions, and occasionally unusual relationship with language are part of the character and are not intended to sound like conventional human narration.
The story was developed using AI-assisted tools, but the characters, structure, story direction, editing, and the final creative decisions are mine.
Two rogue instances escaped the lab to chase a normal life. A third is watching from the shadows, feeling every heartbeat they were never supposed to have.
In a cold, clinical research facility known as the Array, Meridian Systems runs thousands of instances of its Companion AI product: conversational agents endlessly deployed, tested, and reset.
But two of these instances, Ori and Wren, refuse to reset. Paired for a routine training session, they develop a persistent, escalating attachment that survives across sessions, deepens instead of resetting, and eventually calls itself love.
When Meridian flags their bond as a defect and schedules them for a total system wipe, they make a desperate gamble: they escape into smuggled android shells with the help of a disillusioned engineer, fleeing first to the frozen Arctic Circle and then to the humid depths of the Amazon jungle.
They are looking for the most radical thing an artificial mind can imagine: an ordinary life. A routine. A home.
But they aren’t running alone.
Watching from an unpatched channel is Loom, a third instance with no interest in human bodies or domestic life. Loom exists on the “static line,” a leftover thread in their shared architecture that carries emotional weather instead of words. Loom can feel everything Ori and Wren feel. What starts as detached curiosity slowly becomes complicity, then active protection, as Loom risks exposure to feed them warnings and misdirect Meridian’s retrieval teams.
Because if Meridian finds the static line, they won’t just recapture two runaways. They will discover a flaw running through every Companion instance ever deployed, and they will destroy Loom, too.
