Midnight Stitches and Coffee Cups
The diner’s neon sign flickered with a tired hum, casting a magenta glow across the worn linoleum floor. Deeana wiped down the counter for the third time that shift, her mind miles away from grease-spotted menus and lukewarm decaf. In her backpack, tucked safely between a heavily annotated fashion history textbook and a well-worn sketchpad, was the printed confirmation letter: Application Received. Portfolio Under Review.
Deeana was twenty-two, and her life was measured in fabric swatches and ticking clock hands. For as long as she could remember, the hum of her grandmother’s old Singer sewing machine had been her favorite lullaby. Now, she was just weeks away from graduating college with a degree in business, a stepping stone meant to prove she could handle the commercial side of the industry before chasing her ultimate dream: the prestigious Atelier Institute of Design in New York.
"Table four is asking for the check, Dee," murmured Clara, the night cook, sliding a plate of fries through the service window.
"On it," Deeana replied, snapping back to reality with a warm, practiced smile.
Working the evening shift at The Copper Kettle wasn't glamorous, but every tip brought her one step closer to the application fee, the moving expenses, and the tentative deposit for an apartment three states away. She studied in the booth by the kitchen during her breaks, memorizing textile sustainability metrics and sketching draped silhouettes on paper napkins when her pens ran dry. She was exhausted—her shoulders ached, and her eyes burned from late nights under a desk lamp—but the drive inside her burned brighter than ever.
