PROLOGUE

The Death of a Nobody

Rain fell over the Academy of Nine Gates.

It fell upon the black rooftops, the towering statues, the crimson banners hanging from the academy walls, and the narrow windows of the Dormitory of Cinders.

Beyond the academy grounds, thunder rolled across the mountains of Varkhad.

It was the sort of night that made even experienced demons bolt their doors.

Inside Room 307, a fifteen-year-old boy sat alone.

His name was Kael Veyr.

Once, his name had meant something.

He was the son of Lord Vaelric Veyr, a noble whose family had served the Demon Empire for more than six centuries. Their ancestral estate possessed seventy-two rooms, three training grounds, a private medicinal garden, and a treasury protected by magical seals.

Their bloodline had produced generals, court officials, and powerful demon warriors

.

Unfortunately, it had also produced Kael.

Or so his family believed.

Kael sat on the edge of his bed, staring at a piece of paper.

The paper had been folded so many times that its corners had become soft.

Across its surface, written in elegant black ink, were the results of his latest evaluation.

NAME: KAEL VEYR

AGE: 15

BLOODLINE: VEYR

MAGICAL AFFINITY: NONE DETECTED

CORE DEVELOPMENT: NONE

COMBAT POTENTIAL: UNDETERMINED

At the bottom, someone had added a handwritten note.

Recommend reassessment of continued academy enrollment.

Kael read that sentence again.

Then he laughed.

It was a small, unpleasant sound.

"Reassessment."

He placed the paper on his desk.

What a beautiful word.

It made rejection sound like an administrative inconvenience.

He turned toward the window.

Across the rain-darkened courtyard, the academy's central tower glowed with enchanted lanterns. Its upper floors were reserved for the highest-ranking students, those whose magical achievements promised them positions in the imperial army or the royal court.

His half-brother lived there.

Darion Veyr.

Seventeen years old.

C-rank.

The youngest student in his year to earn the distinction.

Darion's portrait had appeared in the academy's monthly bulletin three days earlier.

Beneath it, the headmaster had written an entire paragraph praising his discipline, talent, and contribution to the future of the empire.

Kael had seen the bulletin lying on the dining table.

Someone had spilled wine over the lower half of his own evaluation, which had been placed beside it.

Nobody had bothered to wipe the stain away.

A gust of wind rattled the window

.

Kael lowered his gaze to the small wooden horse on his desk.

Its left leg was missing.

His mother had given it to him when he was four.

He remembered the day because she had laughed when he insisted that the horse needed a name.

He had called it Thunder.

His mother had said that Thunder was a ridiculous name for such a small creature.

Then she had spent the entire afternoon calling it Thunder.

She had been dead for ten years.

Sometimes Kael could still remember the smell of her clothes: lavender, medicinal herbs, and the faint sweetness of the honey cakes she used to hide in her sleeves.

Other memories were disappearing.

He could no longer remember the exact sound of her laughter.

That frightened him more than he cared to admit.

He picked up the wooden horse and rubbed his thumb across its worn back.

"Sorry," he whispered.

He did not know why he apologized.

Perhaps because he had failed to become the person she had believed he could be.

Perhaps because he was tired of carrying something so small and meaningless through a world that had made it abundantly clear that he was meaningless too.

Outside, the academy bell rang.

The sound traveled through the rain.

Kael closed his eyes.

For fifteen years, he had tried to become someone worth keeping.

Tonight, he could no longer imagine what that person looked like.

The room grew colder.

The rain continued.

And the boy who had spent his entire life hoping someone would notice his suffering died alone.

His final breath disappeared into the darkness.

The wooden horse slipped from his hand.

It struck the floor.

Once.

Then everything became still.

No soul remained to watch the rain.

No consciousness lingered behind his eyes.

Kael Veyr was gone.

His body lay motionless on the narrow bed, its fingers curled loosely against the blanket.

Outside, the academy continued living.

Students laughed in the dining hall. Guards changed shifts at the eastern gate. Somewhere in the central tower, a group of noble heirs celebrated a successful examination.

Nobody noticed that one more boy had disappeared from the world.

Nobody knew that his death would become the beginning of something far more terrible than they could imagine.

Because beneath the academy, beneath the mountain, beneath layers of stone that had remained untouched for ten thousand years, something heard the silence.

And awakened.

Merrell Bunting: This story has a unique take on the shifter world. It is fairly quick moving and holds your interest but has some pretty glaring continuity issues which are distracting.
