CHAPTER 1
The Accidental Rebirth
A jagged, white-hot shockwave flared through Lin Yue’s skull, dragging her screaming out of the dark.
She gasped, bolting upright on a freezing concrete floor. The sudden movement sent a wave of sickening dizziness crashing through her chest. Warm, sticky blood dripped from her temple, matting into her dark hair and staining the collar of her torn white dress.
Right outside the shattered window, cold blue lightning ripped through the midnight sky. Heavy thunder shook the floorboards, carrying with it the wet, terrifying growls of infected roaming the ruined streets below.
Where am I?
She reached out to steady herself, her fingers brushing against a ruined leather designer handbag dumped on the floor—an absurdly expensive piece of luxury clutter totally out of place in an apocalypse. The sight triggered a violent cascade of foreign memories that slammed into her mind.
She wasn’t dying in a sterile hospital bed anymore, holding her adopted brother’s trembling hand as her terminal illness took her last breath.
She was inside a novel.
The memory fragments settled with cold, merciless clarity. She had inherited the body of the original host: a foolish, selfish girl who had obsessively pursued the male lead, Gu Chen, through the collapse of civilization. She had thrown hysterical fits over ruined clothes during supply runs, nearly gotten her team slaughtered for cosmetics, and scheme after scheme had failed against the formidable female lead, Zhao Lingwei.
Disgusted by her dead weight, Gu Chen’s team had ruthlessly abandoned her. Moments later, she had been swarmed and devoured alive by a pack of hungry undead.
Dying a gruesome death just from chasing a man... Lin Yue gasped, her breath coming in ragged, painful shards. What a tragic, foolish girl.
Thump. Thump.
Heavy, dragging footsteps echoed directly outside her apartment door, accompanied by a low, guttural rasping sound. An infected was right in the hallway.
Lin Yue froze, her heart hammering against her ribs. Her physical body in this world was chronically frail, delicate, and completely unequipped to fight off a monster with raw strength. Every breath she drew felt light, and her hands trembled from physical exhaustion and blood loss.
I lost my past life to a terminal illness, she thought, her pale fingers clenching into fists against the dusty floor. Now that I’ve been given a second chance, I won’t lose it to a brainless corpse.
Suddenly, the ambient sound of the howling wind abruptly cut out. A bright blue holographic system interface materialized directly in front of her face, illuminating her pale features in a harsh, electric light.
[SURVIVAL SYSTEM ACTIVATED]
[Primary Mission Assigned: Locate Primary Target ‘Gu Chen’ within 15 Days.]
[Secondary Objective: Initiate Target Favorability System & Leave a Favorable Impression.]
[Recommended Operational Protocol: ‘Green Tea’ Behavioral Adaptation — Weaponize inherent physical baseline to maximize target empathy.]
[Failure Penalty: Total Biometric Shutdown / Permanent Death.]
A digital 15-day countdown clock began ticking steadily in the upper corner of her vision.
Lin Yue stared at the hovering screen, a soft, breathy gasp catching in her throat before turning into a quiet, chest-racking cough. A total biometric shutdown? She wiped a trickle of warm blood from her temple, staring at the dark crimson stain on her pale, trembling fingers.
Her mind rapidly mapped out the timeline logic. In the original plot, Gu Chen was a formidable powerhouse who would eventually lead the paramount fortress in City S. Right now, however, he was still stationed in City H for military service.
And I’m trapped in City M.
In a normal world, reaching City H took a single day. In a ruined wasteland with broken roads, infected hordes, and a chronically weak body, making that trip was practically impossible. Worse, the original plot dictated that Gu Chen’s team wouldn’t naturally cross through City M for another thirty days.
Sitting still meant waiting for a rescue that wouldn’t arrive before the 15-day system timer triggered her execution. She couldn’t wait; she had to move first.
Weaponize my physical baseline? Lin Yue analyzed, a faint, sharp spark igniting in her dark eyes. If putting on a delicate, harmless mask keeps me safe in this wasteland... then I’ll play the green tea persona to perfection.
[Host Behavioral Adaptation Accepted. Operational Protocols Locked.]
Hey... do you have a name? Lin Yue asked in her mind, glancing at the glowing screen as she slowly stood up, steadying herself against the edge of a wooden table.
[The host may name the system if she desires.]
Then I’ll call you Xi. Xiao Xi.
[Designation updated. System moniker: Xiao Xi.]
Scratch. Scratch.
The sound of fingernails scraping against the wooden apartment door shattered the quiet moment. The creature outside had caught her scent or heard her soft coughing.
Lin Yue quickly glanced around the abandoned room. On the wooden table sat a small canvas backpack, two sealed bottles of purified water, and three cans of preserved meat—the meager remnants of supplies left behind when her former classmates panicked and abandoned her.
She shoved the water and canned goods into the backpack, zipping it tightly and slipping the straps over her narrow shoulders. The weight made her sway slightly, a stark reminder of how weak her physical constitution was.
Xiao Xi, does the system have a scanning function for nearby threats? Lin Yue asked mentally.
[Basic Spatial Detection Available. Scanning immediate perimeter...]
[Threat Detected: 1 x Tier-0 Infected directly outside door. Secondary Threats: Multiple Tier-0 Infected located in lower stairwell.]
If I stay in this room, the 15-day timer will run out and kill me, she calculated, stepping quietly toward the exit. I have to reach City H.
She approached the heavy door. Through the thin wood, she could hear the ragged, wet breathing of the corpse standing directly on the other side.
Lin Yue reached out her pale, slender hand and gripped the chilled brass doorknob. She allowed her physical posture to relax slightly—shoulders slumping, eyes wide with a look of innocent vulnerability, making her look entirely defenseless, yet her mind remained crystal clear, focused, and ice-cold.
She turned the doorknob quietly, unlocking the heavy metal door, ready to face the dark, infected-filled hallway outside.
[Mission Started.]
