Chapter 1(Gray Day)
Zeyneb walked, sipping her coffee. A yawn escaped her lips. Today, the coffee tasted bad, she thought.
She continued down the corridor when a voice called from behind her.
“Hello, Muslim lady… I need help. Are you offering food somewhere?”
Zeyneb waited for a laugh, expecting a joke—but when none came, she frowned.
“Sir… Lieutenant?” she said. “I don’t know your name, so you must be new. Anyways, ask your officer for food—and let this be the last time you disrespect Sergeant Beauchamps.” She smirked and walked on before he could answer.
By the time she arrived at the mess hall, the other sergeants were all watching her approach.
“You’re late, Beauchamps,” Commander Xavel said, eyes sharp.
“I apologize, Commander. I was helping a new recruit,” she replied calmly.
The other sergeants chuckled quietly as Commander Xavel and the general engaged in discussion.
Meanwhile, Jack Luver’s gaze lingered on her. She was taking notes, her eyes shining like diamonds. She’s really beautiful… gosh, he thought, suddenly aware that she probably caught him staring. He quickly looked away, hiding the heat rising in his chest.
