Chapter 1: The boy who defied death

THE CELESTIAL PUPILChapter One: The Boy Who Defied Death

Death was his ending. Rebirth was the beginning of a legend.

I. THE EYE BEYOND HEAVENIn a world where strength determined destiny, the weak lived beneath the shadows of the powerful. Ancient clans controlled territories that stretched beyond the horizon, sects guarded secrets older than kingdoms, and cultivators devoted their lives to pursuing power that ordinary people could scarcely imagine. In that world, reputation could open the gates of a city, a single battle could erase a family from history, and the difference between a ruler and a corpse was often no more than the strength of one’s cultivation.

Yet even among the countless treasures scattered across the world, there existed one mystery that inspired a deeper fear than any legendary weapon or forbidden technique.

It was known as the Divine Eye.

No scripture offered a reliable account of its origin. No surviving record explained how it came into being, and no cultivator could claim to have mastered it. The oldest legends described it as a power that stood beyond the ordinary laws of heaven and earth—a gift so rare that its appearance could alter the fate of entire worlds.

Some believed the Divine Eye could perceive truths hidden from ordinary sight. Others claimed it could expose the weaknesses of any opponent, see through illusions, or reveal the secret patterns woven into the fabric of existence. The most daring accounts suggested that it could peer into destiny itself, glimpsing paths that had not yet been taken and secrets even the gods would prefer to remain concealed.

Such stories were repeated in secret chambers, whispered in the libraries of ancient sects, and debated by scholars who had spent their lives studying the mysteries of cultivation. Most people dismissed them as exaggerated myths. Those who understood the history behind the legends were less certain.

For generations, powerful families had searched for evidence of the Divine Eye. They scoured forgotten ruins, purchased fragments of ancient manuscripts, interrogated wanderers, and sent their disciples into dangerous lands where entire expeditions had vanished. Kingdoms had fallen in the pursuit of its power. Ancient sects had turned against one another, and innocent lives had been sacrificed because someone believed that a rumor might lead to the greatest treasure in existence.

The search continued despite the absence of proof. Ambition rarely surrendered to reason, especially when the reward promised supremacy over every rival.

But the hunters had overlooked one possibility.

The Divine Eye was not waiting in a sealed tomb, hidden beneath a mountain, or guarded by some ancient formation. It had already entered the world.

Its bearer was not an emperor’s heir, a revered prodigy, or the disciple of a legendary master. He was simply a boy—an ordinary child by every measure the world could recognize, living a life so quiet that no one would have considered it worthy of a second glance.

He knew nothing of the legends surrounding his existence. He had never studied the ancient records, never heard the whispers of the great clans, and never imagined that a power coveted by generations of cultivators lay dormant within him.

To the world, he was insignificant.

To the forces searching for the Divine Eye, he would one day become the most valuable person alive.

II. THE SECRET HIS PARENTS PROTECTEDOnly two people knew the truth: his parents.

They remembered the night he was born. For a brief moment, a strange golden radiance had filled the room, bathing the walls in a light that seemed to come from nowhere. The air had grown unusually still, and an unfamiliar energy had gathered around the newborn child. Then, as quickly as it had appeared, the light had faded.

At first, they had struggled to explain what they had witnessed. They were frightened, but the fear was mixed with wonder. Their son was alive and healthy, yet something about his arrival felt unlike anything they had ever known.

The answer revealed itself in the days that followed.

Occasionally, a delicate symbol appeared between the child’s eyebrows: a faint, golden mark shaped like an eye. It never remained for long. It would emerge without warning, shine for a few breaths, and disappear as though it had never existed. Whenever it appeared, the air around him seemed to shift, and his parents felt an inexplicable pressure that they could neither understand nor measure.

They eventually reached a conclusion that frightened them more than any uncertainty.

Their son possessed the Divine Eye.

They did not know why it had chosen him, what its full power might be, or what consequences its existence would bring. They knew only the legends—and the terrible things people had done in pursuit of the power those legends described.

If the wrong person discovered the truth, their child would never be allowed to live an ordinary life. Powerful families would come to claim him. Cultivators would see him not as a person, but as a vessel for a treasure they believed they deserved. Some might attempt to control him. Others might try to dissect the mystery of his power, regardless of the suffering their curiosity caused.

His parents could not bear the thought.

They made a solemn promise to one another: the secret would remain hidden for as long as they lived.

They concealed every sign of the mysterious mark, avoided drawing attention to their family, and raised their son as normally as circumstances allowed. They never told him what he carried. When the golden symbol appeared, they waited for it to fade before allowing anyone near him. They watched him carefully, not because they feared him, but because they feared what the world might do if it learned the truth.

Their caution became a quiet part of their lives. Every unfamiliar visitor brought a moment of worry. Every rumor about the Divine Eye reminded them that their secret was not safe merely because no one had discovered it yet.

Still, the years passed, and their home remained peaceful.

Their son grew as children do. He laughed at small joys, asked questions about the world, stumbled while learning to run, and dreamed about a future whose shape he could not yet imagine. He knew the warmth of his mother’s embrace and the steady reassurance of his father’s presence. He believed the world was large, mysterious, and full of possibilities.

For a time, that belief was enough.

He did not know that the quiet life he cherished rested upon a secret capable of destroying it. He did not know that, somewhere beyond the boundaries of his childhood, powerful people were still searching for the Divine Eye. Most of all, he did not know that his parents’ love had placed them between him and a danger they could not defeat by strength alone.

They wanted only one thing for him: the chance to grow up and choose his own destiny.

But the world had other plans.

III. WHEN THE HUNTERS ARRIVEDThe truth did not escape their protection all at once. It travelled through fragments—an old rumor repeated by the wrong person, a strange occurrence remembered by a suspicious observer, a trace of energy that someone with sufficient knowledge recognized for what it was. Little by little, separate clues began to form a pattern.

Eventually, that pattern reached the ears of people who had spent years hunting the Divine Eye.

They did not mistake the discovery for a coincidence. Their search had consumed too much time, wealth, and blood for them to abandon a promising lead. They followed the evidence until it brought them to the boy’s home.

The attack came under the cover of darkness.

Armed men surrounded the house, their silhouettes gathering beyond the windows and along the paths leading away from the property. They carried themselves with the confidence of people who had never expected ordinary resistance to matter. Their eyes reflected no concern for the family inside. They had come too far, and they believed their prize was finally within reach.

The first sign of danger was the sudden stillness outside. Then came the sound of movement, the scrape of weapons, and the crash of something breaking in the darkness.

His parents understood immediately.

The secret had been discovered.

There was no time to escape unnoticed. No opportunity to reason with the attackers. The people outside had not come to negotiate, and the parents knew that an appeal to mercy would mean nothing to those who had convinced themselves that the Divine Eye belonged to them.

They moved to protect their son.

The boy could not understand what was happening. One moment, his home had been the familiar centre of his world; the next, strangers had invaded the night, and fear had transformed his parents’ faces. He heard the noise of destruction and saw the urgency in their movements. He asked questions, but there was no time for explanations.

The attackers wanted no gold, land, or ordinary treasure.

They had come for his eyes.

His parents placed themselves between him and the danger, trying to buy him enough time to escape. Their fear was real, but their decision was immediate. Whatever happened to them, their son had to survive.

“Run!” they urged him.

He hesitated. He did not want to leave them behind. He could not understand why the people he loved were suddenly asking him to flee from the only home he had ever known. He wanted to stay, to help, to believe that if he remained beside them everything might somehow return to normal.

But his parents’ expressions left no room for argument.

“Go!” they insisted. “Do not look back!”

With tears gathering in his eyes and terror tightening his chest, the boy obeyed. He fled through the darkness as the sounds of conflict rose behind him. Each step carried him farther from the life he understood. The home where he had laughed and dreamed was being swallowed by violence, and the people who had always protected him were now facing an enemy he could not comprehend.

He ran without knowing where he was going.

He ran because his parents had told him to live.

IV. THE LAST ROADThe forest received him in darkness.

Moonlight slipped through the branches in pale fragments, barely illuminating the uneven ground beneath his feet. Roots caught at his shoes, stones bruised his soles, and thorny branches tore at his clothes as he forced his way through the undergrowth. He had never travelled this far alone. Every rustle seemed like a warning, and every shadow appeared to conceal someone waiting to seize him.

Behind him, the sounds from home grew distant—but they did not disappear from his thoughts. He could still imagine his parents standing against the attackers. He could still hear the urgency in their voices telling him to run.

He wanted to turn back.

He wanted to believe they would follow him once the danger had passed.

But the boy kept moving, clinging to the fragile hope that obedience might save all three of them.

His pursuers were relentless. They followed his trail with the certainty of hunters who believed the prize at the end justified every action along the way. They knew the boy could not understand the power he carried, and they assumed fear would eventually drive him into a place from which escape was impossible.

Their voices began to reach him through the trees.

The boy ran faster.

His breathing grew ragged. Pain spread through his legs, and his body began to tremble from exhaustion. He stumbled, caught himself against a tree, and pushed onward. He was not trained to fight. He possessed no weapon, no cultivation technique, and no knowledge of how to defend himself against the men pursuing him.

He was only a child trying to remain alive.

The path narrowed as the forest thinned. The ground rose, and the trees gave way to exposed stone. When he finally reached the end of the trail, he stopped so abruptly that he nearly fell.

Before him stood a towering cliff.

Far below, a river surged through a ravine, its dark waters smashing against jagged rocks. The sound of the current rose from the depths like a continuous roar. Mist drifted above the water, and the moonlight turned its restless surface into broken silver.

The boy stared down in disbelief.

There was no safe path forward. The cliff face dropped sharply toward the river, and the rocks offered no obvious route down. He turned around, hoping against hope that he had missed another way.

His pursuers emerged from the darkness.

They spread across the narrow path behind him, closing off the only route back into the forest. Their expressions were hard, their movements measured. They had chased him through the night, and now they believed the pursuit was over.

One of them stepped forward.

“It’s finished,” the man said. “Come with us, and make this easier.”

The boy backed away until loose stones shifted beneath his heels. He looked from the men to the river, then back again. There was nowhere left to run.

The hunters did not see a frightened child. They saw the bearer of the Divine Eye—the answer to years of obsession, the key to a power they believed could place them above every rival.

They were prepared to take it by force.

The boy’s hands tightened into fists. For the first time, he began to understand the terrible truth of his existence. The strangers had not come because he had done something wrong. They had come because of something inside him, something he had never asked for and could not control.

His greatest gift had become his greatest curse.

V. THE CHOICE AT THE CLIFFThe river thundered beneath him.

The hunters advanced, confident that the boy’s fear would soon overcome whatever resistance remained. They spoke as though his future had already been decided, as though his life were merely a problem to be solved before they could claim their reward.

He thought of his parents.

He thought of the home he might never see again, the questions he had never been allowed to ask, and the ordinary future he had taken for granted only hours earlier. He did not know whether his parents were alive. He did not know why the Divine Eye had chosen him. He knew only that the men before him would not let him go.

If they captured him, they would take control of his fate. They might tear the power from him, or do something worse in their attempt to understand it. Whatever happened next would be decided by people who saw him as a treasure rather than a human being.

The river offered no promise of safety. Its waters were violent, and the fall was terrifying. Jumping might mean death.

But remaining meant certain capture.

The boy looked over the edge once more. Wind swept up from the ravine and tugged at his clothes. He trembled, not because he lacked courage, but because he understood what he was about to do. He was afraid of dying. He was afraid of the darkness below. He was afraid that he would never see his parents again.

Yet he was even more afraid of allowing the hunters to take the only thing they had pursued him for.

He stepped toward the edge.

“Stop!” one of the men shouted, suddenly recognizing what the boy intended.

Another rushed forward.

They were too late.

A strange warmth spread across the boy’s forehead. The symbol that had appeared only occasionally throughout his childhood emerged once more, brighter than it had ever been. Golden light gathered between his eyebrows, illuminating his face and casting sharp reflections across the stones.

For one impossible instant, the world seemed to fall silent.

The wind stopped. The river’s roar faded into the distance. Even the hunters hesitated, startled by the radiance pouring from the mark they had spent years trying to find.

The Divine Eye had awakened.

The boy did not understand what the light meant. He had no time to discover its purpose. He only knew that the men were reaching for him and that he had made his choice.

He leapt.

His small figure dropped into the ravine, swallowed by the darkness between the cliff and the river. For a fleeting moment, the golden mark shone against the night. Then the raging water closed over him.

The current seized his body and dragged him beneath the surface. Cold water surrounded him. The force of the river pulled him into the darkness, beyond the reach of the moonlight and the desperate shouts above.

At the cliff’s edge, the hunters stared down into the churning water. They searched for movement, for a body, for any sign that the boy might have survived. The river gave them nothing. Its current continued on its ancient course, indifferent to their fury and the treasure they believed had slipped from their grasp.

At last, they were forced to face the possibility that the bearer of the Divine Eye was gone.

The boy disappeared beneath the river.

To the hunters, the pursuit had ended in failure.

To the boy, as far as he could know, everything had ended.

VI. THE VOID BETWEEN WORLDSThere was no pain in the darkness that followed. There was no sound, no movement, and no clear sense of time. The boy could not feel the river against his skin. He could not hear the hunters or the wind. He could not even tell whether he still possessed a body.

He tried to open his eyes, but there was nothing to see.

He tried to move, but no limb answered him.

A terrible thought rose within his fading awareness.

Was he dead?

He remembered the cliff, the golden light, and the moment he had chosen to jump. He remembered the river closing over him. Beyond those memories lay only emptiness, stretching in every direction without beginning or end.

He had been so afraid of dying, yet now he could not even understand what death meant. He had no way to call for help, no way to return to the people he loved, and no way to know whether their sacrifice had meant anything.

Still, something within him refused to surrender.

Deep inside his consciousness, a faint golden spark appeared.

At first, it was barely more than a point of light, fragile against the surrounding void. Then it pulsed once, and the darkness around it trembled. A second pulse followed, brighter than the first. The light spread through the emptiness, revealing ancient symbols that rotated slowly around him like fragments of a language forgotten before the birth of the stars.

The Divine Eye.

The power had remained hidden throughout his childhood, appearing only in brief flashes that neither he nor his parents could explain. Now, as his physical life slipped away, it stirred with a force that seemed to ignore the ordinary boundaries between life and death.

The symbols accelerated. Space shuddered. Invisible barriers cracked, and the darkness began to reveal depths beyond anything the boy could comprehend.

Then a voice echoed through the void.

“Your first life has ended, but your destiny remains unfinished.”

The voice did not seem to come from any direction. It was present everywhere, resonating through the light and the emptiness alike. The boy could not answer it. He could barely hold on to the awareness that he existed.

The voice continued.

“You have lost your home. You have lost those you love. You have tasted the cruelty of a world that fears what it cannot control.”

The golden light grew stronger. The ancient symbols formed a vast circle around his consciousness, and the space beyond them began to fracture like glass beneath an invisible pressure.

“But death is not the end of your journey.”

The words stirred something within him—an instinct, a promise, or perhaps a command buried deeper than memory. Before he could understand it, an immense force seized his consciousness and drew him forward.

The void shattered.

He was pulled through an expanse filled with countless stars, unfamiliar celestial bodies, and strange realms that seemed to exist beyond the borders of his former universe. Worlds appeared around him and vanished before he could comprehend their shapes. Vast mountains pierced luminous skies. Rivers of spiritual energy flowed between floating continents. Celestial beings moved through dimensions so immense that their passing seemed capable of shaking the foundations of reality.

He was no longer travelling through the world he had known.

He was crossing the boundaries of existence itself.

The Divine Eye carried him onward, preserving his consciousness as the laws of his former universe fell away behind him. He could not choose his destination, could not slow the journey, and could not understand why the power within him had decided that his story should continue.

Then, as abruptly as it had begun, the movement stopped.

The golden light faded.

Silence returned.

And somewhere beneath an unfamiliar sky, a newborn child drew his first breath.

VII. REBIRTH UNDER AN UNKNOWN SKYThe boy had been reborn.

Yet this was no ordinary reincarnation. His consciousness had crossed the boundaries of the universe, carried into a reality governed by laws he had never known. The world that received him was not the world he had left behind. Its history was different, its civilizations unfamiliar, and its systems of cultivation shaped by forces that had never touched his former life.

Here, spiritual energy flowed through the heavens and the earth. Ancient sects competed for supremacy, powerful clans ruled vast territories, and cultivators pursued immortality through countless stages of advancement. Mountains rose like pillars beneath the clouds, hidden realms lay beyond ordinary sight, and the remnants of ancient powers waited in places where time itself seemed reluctant to move.

Strength remained the measure by which many lives were judged.

The weak could be overlooked or crushed, while the powerful possessed the means to reshape the fate of entire nations. Ambition flourished in the halls of great sects, and old rivalries endured across generations. It was a world of opportunity, danger, and mysteries that even its greatest cultivators had yet to unravel.

The boy entered this world with none of its knowledge.

His memories of his first life remained buried deep within his consciousness. The warmth of his parents’ home, the terror of the hunters, the cliff, and the raging river were beyond his reach. He could not remember the choice that had brought him here, nor could he explain the power that had carried him across universes.

His new life began in obscurity.

The Divine Eye, too, had fallen silent. Its golden radiance no longer filled the void, and the mysterious symbols had vanished from view. To anyone observing the newborn child, there would be no reason to suspect that his soul had crossed the boundaries of existence. He appeared to be no more than an infant beginning an ordinary life in an extraordinary world.

But the power had not disappeared.

It remained within him, dormant and patient, preserving a secret that even the laws of reality had failed to erase.

One day, the boy would grow old enough to open his eyes to the world around him. One day, buried fragments of his former existence might begin to stir. He would have the opportunity to learn the laws of cultivation, discover the strength hidden within his body, and confront the mysteries that surrounded his birth.

He would be given another chance.

A chance to grow stronger.

A chance to uncover the truth behind the Divine Eye.

A chance to discover why it had chosen him—and why it had carried him beyond the boundaries of his first universe.

Above all, he would have a chance to fulfil the will that death had failed to destroy.

For the child who had once stood helplessly at the edge of a cliff would not remain powerless forever. In this new universe, he would begin again. He would face enemies more formidable than those who had hunted him before, encounter mysteries buried beneath the foundations of the cosmos, and eventually confront forces that had existed long before his birth.

Yet the greatest mystery would not lie in the heavens, the ancient sects, or the forgotten ruins scattered across the world.

It would lie within himself.

What was the true origin of the Divine Eye?

Why had it appeared in his first life?

And what purpose had compelled it to carry his consciousness across the boundaries of the universe?

For now, the answers remained beyond his reach. He was only a child, beginning a new life in a world that knew nothing of his past. His memories slept, his power remained hidden, and his destiny had yet to reveal its shape.

But deep within his soul, the Divine Eye continued to watch.

Patiently.

Silently.

Waiting for the day its true power would awaken.

VIII. THE BEGINNING OF A LEGENDThe boy’s first life had ended in despair. His second began in obscurity. No one in this unfamiliar universe knew what he had endured, what he had lost, or what power had accompanied him into the world. No one knew that the child who had just taken his first breath had once stood at the edge of death and crossed the boundaries of reality itself.

His story was not over.

The Divine Eye had preserved him, but it had not revealed its purpose. The voice in the void had declared that his destiny remained unfinished, yet the meaning of those words was still hidden. Whether the Eye had chosen him by chance or guided him toward some greater design, the truth lay far beyond his present understanding.

For now, he would grow as any child might. He would learn the language of his new home, discover its customs, and eventually encounter the cultivation world that shaped the lives of its people. The vast heavens above him held countless secrets, and the road ahead would be filled with trials he could not yet imagine.

The same world that offered him a second chance would one day test him. Powerful clans would guard their authority. Sects would compete for rare talents and ancient inheritances. Cultivators would risk everything to reach higher realms of power. And somewhere beyond the knowledge of ordinary beings, mysteries connected to the Divine Eye would wait to be uncovered.

When the boy finally awakened to the truth of his existence, he would have to decide what kind of person he wished to become. Would he allow the cruelty of his first life to define him, or would he forge a destiny of his own? Would he seek only the strength needed to protect himself, or would he pursue the origin of the power that had carried him beyond death?

Those questions belonged to a future that had not yet arrived.

For now, the newborn slept beneath an unfamiliar sky, unaware of the legend gathering around his soul. The Divine Eye remained dormant, its golden light hidden from the world. But it had crossed universes with him, and no force had managed to sever their connection.

Someday, the Eye would open again.

And when it did, the universe would begin to understand that the boy’s rebirth was not the conclusion of an impossible journey, but the beginning of something far greater.

The hunters of his first life had believed that the Divine Eye was a treasure to be possessed. They had never understood that its power reached beyond the limits of their world. They had pursued the boy as though taking his eyes would grant them dominion over destiny itself.

They had been wrong.

The Eye had not been claimed by them. It had not been destroyed by the river. It had crossed the boundary between life and death, carrying its bearer into a universe where a new legend could take root.

The boy had lost his home. He had been separated from his parents. He had tasted fear before he was old enough to understand the world. Yet death had failed to erase him, and the power that had made him a target had become the bridge to his second life.

His destiny remained unfinished.

And when the day finally came for the Divine Eye to open completely, the heavens themselves might tremble at what it revealed.

This was not the end of his story.

It was the first page of his legend.
