The end of a God
An endless void stretched in every direction, its darkness broken only by distant stars. Heavy chains bound him in place, their cold metal digging into his skin.
Nothing moved.
Nothing spoke.
Yet somewhere within that suffocating silence, footsteps began to echo.
Slow.
Steady.
Drawing closer.
He didn't bother lifting his head.
“Hmm…”
An exhausted breath escaped his lips.
“There's something I'd like to ask…”
His voice was little more than a whisper, barely disturbing the silence surrounding him.
“Why did all of you do this to me?”
He lowered his gaze to the chains binding him.
What did I ever do wrong?
I treated you all like family. I trusted you. So why are we in this position?
His fingers twitched, and the chains rattled faintly.
And what are these damned things?
A sharp pain spread through his body as the cold metal pressed deeper into his skin. Even the smallest movement felt unbearable.
For a moment, he closed his eyes.
Was it because of that one time I beat you all up?
A faint, bitter smile tugged at his lips.
Seriously? Is that really why you've done this to me?
No answer came.
Of course, there was no answer.
There was only the endless void, the distant stars, and the footsteps that had finally stopped before him.
He slowly lifted his head.
A woman stood before him.
For the briefest moment, a faint smirk crossed his face. Then he looked away, as though her presence meant nothing to him.
She stared at him.
The being who once stood above countless others was now chained, battered, and barely able to lift his head.
“Is this all you're good for?” she asked.
Her voice echoed through the void, carrying a sharpness that couldn't quite conceal what lay beneath it.
He exhaled.
“What if it is?”
She said nothing.
How weak you've become.
The thought came unbidden, accompanied by a bitterness she couldn't explain away.
And yet, despite everything, she couldn't bring herself to leave him there.
Not like this.
Not without seeing him one last time.
“[HER NAME]…”
He murmured her name, his voice so faint that she almost wondered whether she'd imagined it.
Her expression softened.
“Please, look at me.”
He remained still.
“Just once,” she whispered. “For old times' sake.”
Nothing.
Not even a glance.
She clenched her fist, fighting the emotions threatening to overwhelm her.
Then she knelt before him.
Up close, she could see just how much he had changed. His face was strained, his body battered, and the light that had once seemed inseparable from his existence was fading.
She searched his face for something familiar.
A spark of defiance.
A trace of the arrogance that had once made him unbearable.
Anything.
But all she found was exhaustion.
And pain.
Please.
Her fingers trembled.
Just look at me. Even if it's only for a moment.
She leaned forward, bringing her lips close to his.
For one brief instant, she hesitated.
Then she tried to kiss him.
He turned his head away.
She froze.
The silence between them suddenly felt heavier than the chains binding him.
Confusion flickered across her face, followed by a hurt she couldn't completely hide.
She could have left.
Perhaps she should have.
Instead, she drew him into her arms, holding him close as though she could keep him there a little longer.
He didn't resist.
He didn't return the embrace, either.
For what felt like a lifetime, neither of them spoke.
The vast void remained silent. The distant stars continued to shine, indifferent to the sorrow unfolding beneath them.
“That's my final act of love,” she whispered.
Her voice trembled.
She lowered her head, trying to hide the tears gathering in her eyes.
“Didn't you say we'd be together forever?”
She waited.
He gave her nothing.
Not a word.
Not a promise.
Not even a lie to make the moment easier.
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“I guess you lied.”
He closed his eyes.
Then, at last, a single tear escaped him.
It traced a path down his battered face, carrying a sorrow that seemed far too vast for one tear to contain.
He had no words left.
Perhaps he had none left to give her.
Behind them stood eight powerful beings.
They had watched everything.
Not one had moved.
Not one had spoken.
Whatever had brought them to this place, none of them seemed willing to interrupt this final moment.
Then a voice shattered the silence.
“Leave him, [HER NAME].”
The woman stiffened.
For a moment, she didn't move. Her arms tightened around him, as though she could defy the command simply by refusing to let go.
But the voice came again.
“Leave him.”
Slowly, she released him.
The warmth of her embrace disappeared.
And with it, the last fragile comfort he had known in that endless darkness.
Something inside him stirred.
He raised his head.
The chains rattled as he fought against their weight, pain tearing through his body with every movement.
His eyes settled on the figure standing before him.
“WHY?!”
The word ripped from his throat.
It wasn't merely a question.
It was every unanswered question, every broken promise, every moment of suffering he had endured, all forced into a single cry.
“WHY?!”
His voice cracked.
The sound travelled through the endless void before fading into silence.
The figure watched him with an expression that was almost bored.
Then he tilted his head.
“Do you really want to know why?”
The question was delivered with an almost scholarly air, as though he were about to explain some fascinating principle rather than justify an act of betrayal.
He stared at him.
I've been asking you that this entire time.
The chains dug deeper into his skin.
He didn't have the strength to repeat himself.
The figure sighed.
“Well, you're too strong. That's really all there is to it.”
He spoke as casually as someone discussing the weather.
“With you out of the picture, I can finally take my rightful place as ruler.”
His brow furrowed.
“Ruler?”
For the first time, genuine confusion cut through his exhaustion.
“What do you mean, ruler?”
The figure's expression barely changed.
“Don't worry about it.”
He turned away slightly, as though the conversation had already bored him.
“You won't be around to see me rise, brother.”
Brother.
The word struck him harder than the chains ever could.
His head jerked upward.
For a moment, he simply stared.
Then the truth settled over him.
The voice.
The mannerisms.
The person standing before him.
So it was you.
His brother.
Of all the beings who could have stood behind this betrayal, it was him.
He had imagined countless reasons for his suffering. He had questioned his actions, searched for his mistakes, and wondered what he could have done differently.
But this?
He had never expected this.
And yet, strangely, the revelation brought him no fury.
No sudden desire for revenge.
No burning determination to drag his betrayer down with him.
Only an overwhelming, familiar exhaustion.
Ah.
He lowered his gaze.
So that's how it is.
His body ached. His thoughts felt distant, as though even his mind had grown tired of trying to understand the world around him.
Fine.
End it.
Let me sleep.
For so long, he had endured.
For so long, he had struggled, fought, and tried to find a reason to keep going.
Now, standing at the very edge of his existence, he found that he had nothing left to prove.
No throne worth defending.
No victory worth chasing.
No future he desperately needed to see.
He was simply tired.
I'm so tired.
The figure raised his hand.
He barely had time to notice the movement before an invisible force seized the chains.
They snapped taut.
His body was wrenched upward, suspended helplessly in the darkness.
Then—
He was violently pulled apart.
“ARGHHHH!”
Pain exploded through him.
His scream tore through the void as his body was dragged in opposite directions by the merciless force. Instinct took over. He struggled against the chains, desperately trying to free himself.
He had survived battles that shattered worlds.
He had endured forces that would have erased lesser beings from existence.
But now, even moving his fingers felt impossible.
The chains held firm.
His strength failed him.
“GAAAH—!”
A sickening impact broke through his scream.
His arm fell to the ground.
For a moment, he could do nothing but stare at it.
Then the pain caught up with him.
“ARGHHHH!”
His voice came out broken, scraping through an already ruined throat.
He gasped, fighting to draw breath.
Every second stretched into an eternity.
His body trembled.
His vision blurred.
And slowly, he began to notice something far more terrifying than the pain.
His energy was leaving him.
It seeped from his ruined body, vanishing into the surrounding darkness like water slipping through open fingers.
He tried to hold on to it.
He tried to summon what remained of his strength.
Nothing answered.
The stars above him grew hazy.
The figure standing before him became little more than a shadow.
He struggled to keep his eyes open.
So this is it.
His brother raised his arm.
Ominous energy gathered around it, twisting through the darkness with a presence that made the void itself seem to recoil.
He watched through fading eyes.
He knew he should have felt something.
Anger, perhaps.
Hatred.
Regret.
There were promises he had made. Things he had left unfinished. A life that, under different circumstances, might have continued.
Yet as his consciousness slipped away, none of it could reach him.
He couldn't bring himself to grieve.
He couldn't bring himself to hate.
All he felt was an unfamiliar lightness.
For the first time in what felt like an eternity, he no longer had to keep going.
No more fighting.
No more pretending he wasn't tired.
No more searching for answers that might never come.
Ah… so it's finally time.
His eyelids grew heavy.
I'm going to die.
A faint smile touched his lips.
Finally.
Let me sleep.
His final thoughts drifted toward the promise he had once made.
Then even that faded.
And his eyes closed.
…
Silence returned to the vast space.
For a moment, nothing moved.
The chains hung motionless in the darkness. The distant stars flickered, and the remnants of his fading energy disappeared into the void.
Then the universe trembled.
An unseen shockwave spread beyond the endless darkness, shaking the very fabric of existence.
A god had fallen.
And with his death, the balance that had held the universe together was changed forever.
The figure lowered his arm.
He stood alone before the place where his brother had died, the ominous energy still swirling around him.
The old ruler was gone.
The path to the throne lay open.
And so, as one existence came to an end, another began its rise.
A new ruler had been born.
