The unwritten severance

Summary

The Unwritten Severance is a hauntingly raw contemporary drama that explores family, betrayal, and the devastating cost of chasing an illusion. Nineteen-year-old Jerin’s world dissolves into a psychological nightmare when her sister Moli’s calculated, destructive choices shatter their family's societal standing. In a flash of volatile fury, violence erupts behind closed doors, vows are broken, and Jerin and her mother are cast out—exiled from their ancestral village home. Desperate for sanctuary, Jerin clings to the lavish portrait her mother paints of the city. Blinded by the promise of escape, she makes a calculated choice to abandon her crucial board examinations and flee to the urban landscape. However, the city paradise quickly cracks like a house of cards. Trapped within the toxic walls of her maternal relatives' home, she faces a grinding daily degradation where even the food on her plate is tracked by demeaning eyes. Forced back to her birth soil to save her educational future, Jerin knocks on the doors of her paternal grandfather and uncle. Instead of refuge, she faces a ruthless anatomy of rejection that systematically burns every legal and social bridge behind her. Written under the pen name Ayisha Binte Abdul Razzak, this poignant novel uses profound psychological realism to explore the resilience it takes to survive the ultimate severance of blood ties.

Chapter 1

When Jerin stepped out onto the deck of the launch, a heavy shroud of fog had already swallowed the Buriganga River. The biting winter wind struck her face with a vengeance, yet the freezing chill was nothing compared to the turmoil raging within. Though the distant hum of an unfamiliar city clawed at the air, it failed to reach her ears. Her gaze remained locked onto the dark, swirling water below.

Inside her mind, a single word kept pounding like a relentless hammer: betrayal.

People marveled at the brilliant twists on theater stages or silver screens. But she was just a nineteen-year-old girl—ordinary, quiet, and far removed from the world of drama. She had never imagined, even in her wildest dreams, that her own life would take such a terrifying turn. As she stared into the river’s infinite darkness, an overwhelming emptiness hollowed out her chest. A sob rose in her throat, but the sheer shock of the past few hours had turned her tears into stone.

She slipped her hand into her pocket, her fingers brushing against the crinkling banknotes, the very last money her father had given her. In a sudden, jarring flash, her mind drifted backward, leaving the foggy river behind, pulling her back to the comforting safety of the village home she knew so well. Everything was supposed to be safe. Everything was supposed to be whole. Yet, here she stood, on the edge of the unknown.

Everything used to be so beautiful, wrapped in the warm embrace of their close-knit village life. Her father’s sister lived just a two-minute walk away, making her elder aunt’s house feel less like a neighbor’s and more like an extension of her own sanctuary.

Walking between the two houses several times a day was part of Jerin’s daily rhythm. Afternoons brought a familiar routine. They would sit together on the veranda to study, Jerin playfully guiding the younger cousins while absorbing the gentle wisdom of her grandfather and the family elders with deep reverence.

Jerin’s entire world was contained within these small, beautiful boundaries.

As dusk fell, her elder aunt’s spacious courtyard transformed into a lively haven under the stars. All the cousins would gather, filling the evening air with laughter, endless chatter, and the sweet melody of traditional folk tunes before sitting down together for a grand family dinner. Her aunts always took pride in cooking their finest dishes, making sure their siblings and nieces ate to their heart’s content. Jerin and her elder sister, Moli, dissolved into that pure joy. Whenever there was a special occasion or a guest arrived, their happiness knew no bounds, for it meant the dining table would soon groan under the weight of a rare, festive feast.

Jerin’s father was a man ruled by cold calculation; his frugality bordered on extreme stinginess. He fiercely hoarded every penny he earned, constantly pleading poverty to his own family. As a result, the burden of sisters’ education, and even the simple joy of buying new clothes for Eid, fell entirely upon the charity of their eldest uncle and aunts. Secretly, her father took immense pride in this arrangement, gloating over his untouched savings.

Driven by their father’s withholding nature, Jerin and Moli learned to tread carefully. They showered their aunts with affection and quietly took on endless chores, both inside and outside the house, terrified of causing any displeasure that might sever their financial lifeline. At nineteen, Jerin lacked the maturity to question her household’s unfair dynamics; she simply assumed this survival mechanism was how the world worked. She dedicated herself to helping her eldest aunt with cooking and managing the household without a single complaint.

Yet, amid the cold calculations of her father, their grandfather was a beacon of pure love. He cherished Jerin and Moli deeply. Using his modest life savings, he had once thrown a grand, joyous celebration for Moli’s exam results—a rare, shimmering memory of unconditional love in their restricted lives.

The first major ripple of joy in that predictable, rhythmic life arrived with the news of Moli’s return. Her elder sister had been living far from home for her higher studies, and when Moli finally walked through the door, Jerin was absolutely ecstatic. But in her pure, innocent joy, Jerin could not have parsed the faintest whisper of the impending storm. She had no way of knowing that this very sister, whom she looked up to, would one day trigger a cascade of scandal that would violently shatter their entire family.

The beginning of that ruinous storm broke on a deceptively ordinary afternoon, inside her younger aunt’s drawing room.

Jerin and her cousin Juli were seated at the dining table, quietly eating their lunch. The peaceful atmosphere fractured instantly when her aunt’s voice cut through the room, uncharacteristically cold and heavy.

“Jerin, you need to go to cousin Itu’s house right away.”

Jerin paused, swallowing her food as a sudden wave of confusion hit her. “Why, Aunt? What happened so suddenly?”

Her aunt’s expression hardened, her features setting into rigid lines. “Itu has broken her arm. She is in an incredibly difficult situation over there. You need to go immediately and help her manage.”

Jerin lacked both the position and the courage to question her aunt’s command. Leaving her life behind, she moved into Itu’s house, working tirelessly day and night to nurse her cousin and keep the household running. However, after a few days, an unsettling shift occurred. Jerin’s other cousin, Sumi, sent a text message to Itu’s phone.

The moment Itu read the words, the color drained completely from her face. One afternoon, after carefully scanning the room to ensure they were entirely alone, Itu called Jerin into a secluded corner. Leaning in close, she whispered, “Sumi and your sister, Moli, had a terrible argument. Did you know anything about this?”

Jerin gasped, her heart skipping a beat. An argument? What could it possibly be about?

Itu looked directly into Jerin’s eyes, her gaze heavy with unspoken gravity. “Your sister Moli had secretly become involved with a man. He was married before, but his first wife left him. Now, he’s desperately rushing to find a new bride, and Moli walked right into his trap. Sumi discovered it and absolutely refused to accept it. She didn’t want to watch Moli willingly walk into a broken household and ruin her own life. That is what triggered the bitter, explosive war between them.”

Hearing those words, she stood frozen as the ground beneath her feet vanished into a vacuum. Moli, the sister she idolized, had hidden a monumental truth, entangling herself with a married man. A suffocating heat rose in Jerin’s chest, choking out her air. Unable to contain the mounting panic, her voice splintered into jagged whispers: “Sister Itu, why didn’t our uncle and aunts step in? Why did everyone just stand by and let her wander down this path? Why was everyone staying silent?”

But Itu offered no answer. She remained entirely detached, staring at Jerin with a hollow, unblinking gaze. In that chilling silence, the quietness felt heavy and swollen with a much larger, darker secret that she had yet to scrape away.

A few days later, when Jerin finally returned to her own house, she found both Moli and Sumi inside. The moment Moli caught sight of her; she rushed over and locked Jerin in a tight, breathless embrace. There was a strange, intoxicating brightness dancing in Moli’s eyes, a dangerous kind of euphoria. Leaning in close to Jerin’s ear, Moli whispered, “Jerin! Just wait and see, all our struggles are finally over. Our golden days are returning! Allah has finally answered our prayers. Your future brother-in-law has just sent four thousand dollars—all at once—just for our shopping. You have no idea, Jerin, how immensely wealthy he is. He is a multi-millionaire, worth forty million dollars!”

Jerin remained silent that day, offering no reply to her sister. Yet, as her eyes locked onto the crisp, glittering four thousand dollars, the heavy knot in her chest began to ease. A subtle, quiet wave of secret excitement, and a creeping sense of greed, began to bloom within her. For a family trapped in a cycle of dependency on the charity of relatives, the mere fable of millions of dollars was an irresistible mirage, though she was too blinded to see it then. She had no way of knowing that beneath the shimmering surface of this temptation lay a psychological abyss. It was an intricate trap that would very soon poison their reputation, turning their entire family into pariahs in the eyes of society and relatives alike, locking them all in an inescapable cage.

Hester: Very good, was short too the point , not lingering on the abuse, pity you didn’t let him step in earlier knowing the abuse was happening, but this is almost real for some women who have gone through it, just wish they could all have a princess at te end of thete tunnel
