Prologue
PROLOGUE
My name is Eli Morris.
Where other people get a single path through life, I get seven. I am standing at all seven intersections at once.
An individual version of me stands at every single crossroads. They aren't clones. They aren't reflections in a mirror. Each one is a complete, independent, living, breathing soul.
We take turns waking up, and we take turns closing our eyes.
We have never met face-to-face. We only leave behind faint footprints in the margins of each other's absence. Every one of us guards his own private stretch of silence; no one ever dares to push open another's door.
Nobody else knows just how many different kinds of silence live inside this single body.
When things get loud, I am my own audience.
When the world goes quiet, I am my own echo.
So I have seven versions of completeness—and seven versions of an emptiness that can never be filled.
I haven't vanished. I just become a different person depending on the day of the week.
But in the end, every single one of them is me.
