Chapter 1 Echoes of the broken promises

The grand ballroom buzzed with the intoxicating hum of pure opulence.

Blinding camera flashes sliced through the dim, romantic lighting. Crystal chandeliers cast golden rays over tailored tuxedos and designer gowns worth millions. It was the elite gathering of the decade.Standing near the center of the hall, Adil Goenka looked every bit the ruthless billionaire titan he was. Beside him stood his breathtaking wife, Nevi."Where is Arya?" Adil asked, swirling the amber liquid in his glass.Nevi adjusted her diamond necklace, offering a serene smile. "He’s upstairs with Kenny. He fell asleep an hour ago."Arya was their eight-month-old son. Leaving him at home wasn't an option, so they had brought his nanny along to ensure his safety in the private suites above."Adil! You actually made it!"A charismatic voice broke through the jazz music. Dev Rishcon—Adil’s best friend and fellow billionaire—approached, holding hands with his stunning wife, Tia.Adil chuckled, shaking Dev’s hand firmly. "I almost thought you were going to ditch us, Dev."Dev smirked, throwing an affectionate glance at Tia. "Come on, man. You’re married too. You know how hard it is to get out on time."Before Adil could reply, his younger brother, Aryan, walked up with his wife, Maya. The couples exchanged warm greetings, lifting champagne flutes to celebrate another successful financial quarter. On the surface, it was a picture of absolute power and unity.Underneath, the air reeked of deception.Across the small circle, Nevi’s gaze flicked upward. For a fraction of a second, her eyes locked with Dev’s. A silent, dangerous secret passed between them before either look could be caught.Nearby, Jeeves—a close associate—entered the hall.Aryan, startled by the sudden arrival, jerked his hand. Dark red wine sloshed over the rim of his glass, splashing directly onto the front of Nevi’s pristine gown."Damn it!" Aryan gasped in panic. "Nevi, I’m so sorry—it was a complete accident!""Oh, shit..." Nevi murmured, stepping back as the deep red stain spread across the silk fabric.Adil instantly stepped forward, shifting his broad body to block his wife from the prying lenses of the surrounding media."Relax, Aryan. It’s alright," Nevi said smoothly, her voice a soothing balm over the sudden panic."Let me help you clean it—" Aryan offered."It’s fine, really," Nevi smiled, shaking her head. "Not a big deal."Maya stepped up, giving Nevi an empathetic look. "Are you sure? I can come with you to the washroom.""I'll take her to the guest room," Adil intervened, wrapping a protective arm around Nevi’s waist. As Adil guided Nevi away from the crowd, Jeeves walked up to the remaining group.Aryan stepped close to Jeeves, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Man... you're late."Maya chuckled, wrapping her arm around Aryan's waist. "Why are you being so tough on your best friend?"As she spoke, Maya’s eyes met Jeeves’s. A subtle spark of hidden intent flashed between them—a silent language shared by two people hiding their own secret affair right under Aryan's nose.In the quiet, marble-lined corridor leading away from the ballroom, Adil’s phone buzzed aggressively. He pulled it out, frowning at the caller ID. He looked at Nevi apologetically.Nevi offered a sweet, understanding smile. "Go ahead, take it. I’ll handle the gown in the guest room.""You’re the best," Adil murmured. He leaned in, kissed her cheek, and hurried down the hall to answer the urgent business call.Back in the main hall, Tia stood beside Dev, her posture stiff. Her knuckles turned white around her wine glass.Noticeable distance had grown between her and Dev for months. Tonight, her phone vibrated with a private notification that sent a chill straight down her spine. She had suspected him of cheating for weeks. Her instincts were screaming at her.And her instincts were dead right."Is everything okay with you two?" Maya asked curiously, sipping her drink."Yes, perfect," Dev said instantly—a response far too fast to be genuine. He cleared his throat. "Excuse me, everyone. I need to step out for a quick call.""Where to, man?" Aryan asked."Just outside. Won't be long," Dev replied, stepping into the shadowy hallway.Tia’s jaw tightened. Beneath her long hair, a micro wireless earbud glinted. In Dev’s coat pocket sat the matching receiver. She wasn't just suspecting him anymore. She was listening.Inside the private guest room, the heavy oak door clicked shut. Before Dev could even turn the lock, a pair of slender hands grabbed his collar, yanking him violently inside. The door slammed shut behind him. Dev was pinned against the wall, his breath catching in his throat.Nevi was breathing heavily, her dark eyes flashing with raw desire. Their lips were inches apart, the heat of their breath mingling in the dim room."Nevi..." Dev rasped, his heart hammering against his ribs. "You’re aggressive tonight."Nevi leaned closer, her lips brushing lightly against his jawline. "Because you drive me insane every single time."Dev groaned. His hands pressed firmly against her waist, pulling her flush against him, his fingers digging into the soft silk of her gown.Suddenly, footsteps echoed down the corridor outside.Nevi froze. Dev’s body went rigid. They scrambled backward, adjusting their clothes with frantic, trembling hands. Sweat beaded on Dev’s forehead as he stared at the brass door handle. The footsteps stopped right outside the door.Neither of them dared to breathe.A moment passed... then the footsteps receded. Adil had picked up another incoming call and walked further down the hallway.Dev let out a ragged breath, wiping his brow. "God... I thought that was Tia."Nevi frowned, looking over her shoulder. "Are you really that terrified of her?"Dev smirked arrogance masking his lingering fear. "Oh, really? And why was your breath hitched just now? Scared of your husband?"Nevi’s lips curved into a wicked smile. She stepped closer, sliding her arms around his neck. They leaned in, lost in a fierce, passionate kiss—unaware that every single breath, every whisper, and every moan was transmitting straight into Tia’s ear.BAM!The guest room door burst open, slamming hard against the adjacent wall.Tia stood on the threshold, her face pale, her eyes burning with a mix of unspeakable agony and murderous rage."Good job, dear husband," Tia spat, her voice trembling with heartbreak.Dev gasped, freezing in place. Nevi’s eyes widened in sheer terror, her hands flying to her mouth."Tia... darling..." Dev stammered, stepping forward with his hands raised. "It’s not what you think—I was just—"CRACK!Tia’s hand whipped across his face, the force of the slap driving his head to the side."Not a single word, Dev!" she shrieked.Nevi gasped in horror, shrinking back against the vanity.Tia yanked the tiny earbud out of her ear, walked over to Dev, and slammed it directly into his palm along with the transmitter from his pocket. Tears finally broke free, streaming down her face."This is what you were doing behind my back?!"Dev squeezed his eyes shut in humiliating defeat. "Tia, please, just listen—"Tia didn't wait. She turned on her heel and stormed out of the room.Panic seized Dev. He sprinted after her. "Tia! Wait!"Nevi rushed out right behind him, desperate to contain the disaster. They burst into the main corridor just as Adil was walking back from his call."What's going on?" Adil asked, looking bewildered as Tia rushed past him. "Tia, are you okay? Dev?"Tia stopped, turning around with a hysterical laugh. "Go ask your filthy wife!"Adil’s smile faded. "What are you talking about? Watch your tongue—she’s my wife.""And Dev is my husband!" Tia screamed at the top of her lungs. "The man your wife was just sleeping with in that room!"The world stopped.Adil’s heart sank into a dark, bottomless pit. He slowly turned his head, staring at Dev, then at Nevi.He searched their faces for a denial. For a laugh. For anything that proved it was a lie.All he saw was guilt."No... Adil, brother, listen to me..." Dev stammered, raising his hands. "It's not what it looks like...""Brother...?" Adil choked out, the word tasting like poison on his tongue.Tia didn't stop. She sprinted directly into the grand ballroom, where hundreds of high-society guests and media reporters were gathered.Dev tackled his way through the doors, grabbing her wrist. "Tia, stop this right now! You are ruining my reputation!""You ruined our marriage!" she sobbed, ripping her arm free. She grabbed a glass of champagne from a passing waiter, chugged it in one draft, and smashed the crystal glass onto the marble floor.CLANG!The room fell dead silent. Every camera lens turned toward her."Ladies and gentlemen!" Tia shouted, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "Look at this man! We have been married for four years! And tonight, he betrayed me with Adil Goenka’s wife, Nevi Goenka!"Gasps erupted through the crowd. Camera flashes exploded like lightning.Near the front, Maya and Jeeves exchanged terrified glances, cold sweat breaking out on their necks as they realized how easily their own secrets could be exposed next."Shut up, Tia!" Dev roared, his face burning with public humiliation."It's over!" Tia cried, throwing her ring to the floor before storming out through the front doors, leaving Dev exposed to the ruthless gaze of the press.Upstairs, Adil stood frozen outside the guest room, his chest heaving.Nevi ran up to him, tears streaming down her face. "Adil... please, listen to me—"Adil whipped around, his eyes blazing with lethal fury. "Listen to you?! You were sleeping with my best friend!"Nevi took a step forward. "Adil—""DON'T COME NEAR ME!" Adil roared. He stepped back, pointing a trembling finger at her face. "Mark my words, Nevi. You stay away from my son."Nevi’s panic turned into desperate rage. "He is MY child, Adil! You can't stop me! I am Arya's mother!"Adil grabbed a heavy porcelain vase from a side table and smashed it against the wall.CRASH!"Mother?!" Adil screamed, tears cutting through the sweat on his face. "Did you remember you were a mother when you were in his arms?!"He swallowed hard, choking back a sob. "Get out of my sight. Get the hell out!"Nevi sneered, stepping closer. "You slept with dozens of women before me! I did it once, and you won't forgive me?!"Adil lost the last shred of his control. He lunged forward, grabbing her chin in a vice-like grip, forcing her to look into his bloodshot eyes."That was BEFORE we got married!" he growled through gritted teeth. "After I married you, you were the ONLY woman I ever touched! Because I was stupid enough to fall in love with you!"He shoved her away with full force. Nevi stumbled backward, falling directly into Aryan’s arms as he rushed up the stairs."Brother, wait!" Aryan pleaded, catching Nevi. "Just calm down!"Adil didn't listen. He couldn't hear anything over the deafening roar of betrayal in his ears.He grabbed an unopened bottle of whiskey from the bar, brushed past his brother, and strode out toward his sports car parked in the VIP drive.
