CH. 1 - the Induction
I’ll cut tothe chase and tell you right now: They exist. You know, the beings of legends? The myths you were told to believe as such, and nothing more? They’re all real. When you fall asleep in your cozy, little cot, you feel safe, or at least safeenough to garner six to eight hours of sleep. Not knowing that, at any givenmoment, some creature of old could potentially ruin your whole town. Level halfa state in less than twenty minutes, and, if they felt froggy, half a continentin less than an hour. Humanity can simply not grasp just how fucked it issometimes-most times even. This is why we have the I.A.A., or the IntricateAnomaly Agency for long. Our organization hunts down the things that go bump inthe night, and the random anomalies that seek out human companionship duringthe day. If you need an example of an anomaly, think of the backrooms. I had afriend in the specialist unit who lost almost the whole team while perusingthrough the alleys and intricate walkways; nasty stuff, I tell ya. I’m gettingoff topic, though. My name is Terrel Kincaid, and I am a QMS (QuadrupleMoonlight Sargent) of the Shadow Kovert Operatives Unit, the group based in theCentral Time Zone. You see, my duties are to ensure that mid to higher rankedCryptids are dealt with in a timely manner. This would include, but not limitedto 0.5 to 8.5 leveled threats, with 8.5 being the most god-like threats of alltimes. Luckily for me, I have yet to deal with these as... “Sargent TerrelKincaid, I presume?” “Uh, yea, I am he. Who would you be?” “Never mind that, just call me Agent Q. You have been reassigned to the Universal Relations Unit, the Level 6 Core Unit, to be exact.” I stood up, in stunned silence, and lookedAgent Q from head to toe. “Wait, what?” He took his shades off and began to rubthem on his pristine, black suit. “Of course, you have a chance at an evenbigger promotion to that of an L6 CU Captain, if you are successful with thismission, that is.” The man must have noticed that I was too stunned to evenanswer. He smiled and said, “And as for your pay increase, you will be makingfive times your current salary.” “Holy shit...” was all I could muster at thetime. “Holy shit indeed, Mr. Kincaid. No time to dwell on it, we need you atthe Primordial Base in Eugene, Oregon at 0500 hours. Pack your bags, and makehaste, Mr. Kincaid. We need you there with your fullest attention on themission debriefing.” He handed me a card that had weird sigils that resembledan outdated cult. Before I could even get a word off to the quick speakingagent, he had turned around and began walking out of my office. Well, I guessthis means I am no longer a Shadow Kovert Operative.
