Chapter 1
### Text:
The rain in Oakhaven didn't just fall; it hunted.
Elara pressed her back against the damp, stone wall of the alleyway, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. Every muscle in her body burned from three days of running. Above her, the iron-grey sky churned with unnatural fury, reacting to the raw, untamed magic crackling just beneath her skin. She closed her eyes, trying to force the blue sparks dancing across her fingertips to recede. If she lost control now, the King’s watchmen would find her by the light alone.
*Footsteps.* Heavy, rhythmic, and unhurried. Iron-shod boots clanked against the cobblestones at the mouth of the alley.
Elara’s heart seized. She pulled her dark hood lower, her hand dropping instinctively to the hilt of the dagger tucked into her belt—though she knew it was useless against what was coming.
"The perimeter is secure," a voice called out from the main street. It was cold, flat, and absolute, cutting through the roar of the storm like a blade.
Kaelen.
Just hearing his title whispered in the taverns had been enough to send shivers through the underground resistance. Commander Kaelen Vane: the King’s hound, a man bound by a blood oath and devoid of mercy. They said he could smell magic on the wind. They said he had never failed a hunt.
The shadow fell over the alley entrance before he even stepped into view.
Kaelen emerged into the dim light of a sputtering streetlamp, his dark armor slick with rain. A heavy cloak billowed behind him, bearing the crest of the royal house. He didn't draw a weapon. He didn't need to. His piercing gaze locked onto Elara’s hiding spot with terrifying precision, as if the darkness itself had betrayed her location.
"You're a long way from the ashes, sorceress," Kaelen said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that vibrated through the wet air.
Elara pushed off the wall, her fingers sparking with a sudden, brilliant flash of lightning as she braced for the end. "Then come and finish it," she whispered, her voice laced with defiance.
Kaelen stopped just a few paces away, his eyes narrowing as he stared at the magic glowing in her hands. For a heartbeat, the storm above paused, holding its breath. And then, the commander did something that defied every law of the kingdom he served.
He lowered his hand from his sword.
