Chapter 1 Elon Musk the most popular
Episode 1: The Beanbag Office (How to Start from Zero)
Palo Alto, California. 1995.
The air inside the tiny, rented office on Sherman Avenue smelled like stale instant noodles and overheating computer parts. It was 3:00 AM. Outside, Silicon Valley was fast asleep, dreaming of tech millions. Inside, twenty-four-year-old Elon Musk was wide awake, his eyes glued to a glowing monitor, his fingers flying across a mechanical keyboard.
He had no investors. He had no rich boss. He had one suit, one computer, and a bank account that was practically empty.
When Elon and his brother Kimbal decided to launch their first startup, Zip2, they made a simple, brutal calculation: renting an apartment cost $1,500 a month, and renting a small office cost $400 a month.
"Why pay for a bedroom when we're going to be working twenty hours a day anyway?" Elon told Kimbal, tossing a dusty beanbag onto the carpeted floor next to the server rack. "We sleep right here. We shower at the local YMCA down the street. Every single dollar goes into the code."
During the day, they walked door-to-door trying to convince stubborn newspaper executives and local businesses to put their directories on the internet. Most people laughed in their faces. "The internet is a fad," one businessman scoffed, slamming the door. "Nobody is going to look up a pizza shop on a computer screen."
Elon didn't argue. He just walked back to the office, bought a bulk bag of cheap hot dogs and oranges to survive the week on one dollar a day, and kept coding. He told the young engineers who joined them a simple rule that would later make him a legend: "Work like hell. If other people are putting in forty hours a week and you're putting in a hundred, even if you're doing the exact same thing, you will achieve in four months what takes them a full year."
He wasn't waiting for a lucky break. He was building leverage out of sheer, relentless sweat.
Career Rule #1 (The Zero-Capital Start): Never wait for perfect conditions or big investors to start your career. Lower your living costs to the bare minimum, cut out every distraction, and outwork everyone in the room. Your first asset isn't money—it's your skill and your stamina.
