Chapter 1: The Night the World Leveled Up
Season One: The Night the World Leveled Up
At 11:59 p.m., Kael Veyran was losing a fight with a vending machine.
“Come on.”
He pressed the refund button.
Nothing.
He pressed it again.
The machine hummed beneath the flickering lights of the underground station, displaying a row of expensive energy drinks and a single packet of crackers that had been stuck behind the glass for three days.
Kael tapped the side panel with his screwdriver.
“Look, I’m not asking for much. You keep the money, I keep the crackers. Everybody wins.”
The machine swallowed his coin.
Kael stared at it.
“You’re a piece of shit.”
Somewhere behind him, a train rumbled through the tunnel. The platform trembled. Fluorescent lights flickered overhead, washing the empty station in sickly white.
He checked his phone.
11:59:42 p.m.
Twenty minutes until the end of his shift. Forty minutes until he could get home, shower, and sleep for approximately six hours before his landlord called to complain about the rent.
A normal night.
A boring night.
Exactly how he liked them.
The vending machine beeped.
Kael looked up.
Every display on its front had gone black.
Then blue text appeared across the glass.
[SYSTEM INITIALIZATION: 98%]
He blinked.
“...What?”
The display flickered.
[SYSTEM INITIALIZATION: 99%]
Kael stepped back.
“Okay. That’s new.”
His phone vibrated.
Once.
Twice.
Then it began vibrating so violently that it nearly slipped from his hand.
Across the empty station, the information screens changed at the same time. Advertisements vanished. Train schedules disappeared. Every display turned the same shade of electric blue.
The numbers on the digital clock froze.
11:59:59.
For one impossible second, the entire station went silent.
No ventilation.
No distant traffic.
No rumbling train.
Even the lights stopped buzzing.
Kael could hear his own heartbeat.
Then the world blinked.
[SYSTEM INITIALIZATION COMPLETE.]
The notification appeared in front of his eyes.
Not on his phone.
Not on the vending machine.
In front of him.
A translucent blue window floated in the air, perfectly sharp against the concrete walls.
Kael reached for it.
His fingers passed through.
He snatched his hand back.
“What the hell?”
More windows opened.
One.
Ten.
Hundreds.
They appeared across the station, outside the tunnel, above the city. Kael couldn’t see beyond the walls, but the blue light reflected off every surface like the world had been submerged beneath an artificial ocean.
Then came the next notification.
[PLANETARY SYSTEM INITIALIZATION: COMPLETE.]
[WORLD STATUS: LEVEL ZERO DUNGEON.]
[FIRST HUNT BEGINS IN: 10:00.]
[SAFE ZONES: NONE.]
Kael stared at the last line.
“None?”
A scream erupted from the street above.
It was cut short by a sound like metal being dragged across concrete.
Then another scream.
Then dozens.
Kael ran toward the stairs.
He made it three steps before every light in the station went out.
Something moved in the tunnel.
He heard it before he saw it.
A wet, rapid clicking.
Click-click-click-click.
Too fast for footsteps.
His phone screen illuminated his shaking hand.
[EMERGENCY QUEST GENERATED.]
QUEST: SURVIVE THE FIRST HUNT
Objective: Remain alive until the countdown reaches zero.
Reward: Initial Survival Package.
Failure: Death.
Kael swallowed.
“Very funny.”
The clicking stopped.
He looked toward the tunnel.
Two pale eyes opened in the darkness.
Then four more.
A thin shape crawled out from beneath the platform edge. Its limbs bent in the wrong directions, its skin stretched tight over a body that looked almost human until it lifted its head.
Its mouth split into a grin.
Too wide.
Far too wide.
A notification appeared above it.
[GRIN CRAWLER]
Threat Level: Low.
Recommended Action: Flee.
Kael stared at the creature.
“Low?”
The thing dropped onto all fours.
Its head tilted.
Then it sprinted.
Kael ran.
He didn’t think about the quest. He didn’t think about classes or levels or whatever nightmare had just invaded his life.
He ran because the creature was fast, because its claws sparked against the tiles, and because the grin on its face looked like something that had never learned what mercy was.
He reached the maintenance door and yanked the handle.
Locked.
“No. No, no, no.”
He slammed his shoulder against it.
Pain shot down his arm.
The creature skittered around the corner.
Kael saw its teeth.
He saw the claws.
He saw the distance between them vanish.
And for the first time in his life, he understood what it meant to be prey.
The creature hit him.
Kael crashed against the maintenance door. Something sharp tore through his jacket, and his shoulder erupted in pain.
He screamed and shoved the screwdriver into the thing’s face.
The creature shrieked.
It wasn’t enough.
Its jaws closed around his forearm.
Kael struck it with his free hand. Once. Twice. The third blow landed against its skull with a sickening crack, but the creature barely reacted.
“GET OFF!”
He kicked its stomach.
It released him.
For half a second, Kael thought he might survive.
Then the creature lunged for his throat.
The world turned white.
Part Two: The Error
Kael woke up gasping.
His hands flew to his neck.
No blood.
No torn skin.
No monster.
He was standing beside the vending machine.
The screwdriver rested in his right hand. His phone was on the floor, its screen glowing blue.
For several seconds, he couldn’t move.
Then he looked at the clock.
11:59:42 p.m.
The exact same time.
The exact same flickering lights.
The exact same train rumbling through the tunnel.
Kael dropped the screwdriver.
“No.”
He stumbled backward, breathing too quickly.
“No, I just...”
He remembered the claws. The teeth. The terrible pressure around his throat.
He remembered dying.
His stomach twisted.
A blue notification opened before his eyes.
[UNREGISTERED TRAIT DETECTED.]
[ANALYZING... ERROR.]
[TEMPORAL INCONSISTENCY IDENTIFIED.]
Kael stared at it.
Another notification appeared beneath the first.
[HIDDEN TRAIT UNLOCKED: LAST SAVE.]
[CHECKPOINT RESTORED.]
He read it once.
Twice.
Then the vending machine beeped.
A packet of crackers dropped into the collection tray.
Kael looked at it.
A hysterical laugh escaped him.
“You have got to be kidding me.”
His phone vibrated.
11:59:59 p.m.
The world blinked.
[SYSTEM INITIALIZATION COMPLETE.]
[FIRST HUNT BEGINS IN: 10:00.]
Kael’s laughter died.
He looked toward the tunnel.
The lights went out.
The clicking began.
This time, he ran before the creature appeared.
He sprinted through the maintenance door.
It was unlocked.
He slammed it behind him, threw the bolt, and stumbled into a narrow service corridor filled with pipes and electrical panels.
Something struck the other side.
Once.
Twice.
The metal buckled inward.
Kael backed away.
His phone flashed.
[EMERGENCY QUEST: SURVIVE THE FIRST HUNT]
[TIME REMAINING: 09:31]
“Right,” he whispered. “Right. This is happening.”
The door shuddered again.
He forced himself to look around.
Maintenance corridor. Electrical panel. Fire extinguisher. A narrow ladder leading to an access hatch.
His hands were shaking so badly that he nearly dropped the extinguisher.
Think.
He repaired machines for a living. He knew how to diagnose a problem under pressure. He knew that panic made people miss the obvious.
The creature was stronger than him.
Faster, too.
So he needed something it couldn’t overpower.
Kael grabbed the extinguisher, pulled the pin, and waited beside the door.
The bolt snapped.
The Grin Crawler burst through.
Kael discharged the extinguisher directly into its face.
White powder filled the corridor.
The creature shrieked and clawed at its eyes.
Kael swung the metal cylinder into its skull.
Once.
Twice.
The third strike knocked it sideways into an electrical cabinet.
Sparks erupted.
The creature convulsed.
Kael didn’t wait to see whether it was dead. He ran for the ladder, climbed two rungs at a time, and shoved the access hatch open.
Behind him, the corridor filled with the smell of burning insulation.
He pulled himself into the space above the ceiling and dragged the hatch shut.
Silence.
Then a notification appeared.
[MINOR THREAT NEUTRALIZED.]
[EXPERIENCE GAINED: 15 XP.]
[LEVEL UP: LEVEL 1.]
Kael stared at the message.
A second window opened.
[CLASS AWAKENING AVAILABLE.]
For one hopeful moment, he thought the nightmare might have rules he could understand.
Then the window changed.
[CLASS ASSIGNMENT FAILED.]
[ERROR: NO VALID CLASS DETECTED.]
[STATUS: UNCLASSIFIED.]
His jaw tightened.
“Of course.”
A distant explosion shook dust from the ceiling.
Somewhere above, people were screaming.
The countdown continued.
[FIRST HUNT BEGINS IN: 08:46.]
Kael crawled through the narrow service space until he found another access hatch. When he pushed it open, he discovered a storage room stacked with cleaning supplies and broken equipment.
A woman was crouched behind a shelf.
She held a kitchen knife in both hands.
Her face was pale. Her eyes were fixed on him.
“Don’t come closer.”
Kael raised his hands.
“Not planning to.”
“Are you infected?”
“I don’t know what that means.”
“Did one of those things bite you?”
He glanced at the bloody tear in his jacket.
“Technically, yes.”
She tightened her grip on the knife.
“Stay away from me.”
“Fair.”
He lowered himself onto an overturned bucket, keeping several feet between them.
For a while, neither spoke.
Then she asked, “What level are you?”
Kael looked at her.
“What?”
“Your status. The System gave everyone a status window. What’s yours?”
He hesitated.
“Level one. No class.”
Her expression changed.
“That’s impossible.”
“Apparently, the universe disagrees.”
She almost smiled.
Almost.
“I’m Seren.”
“Kael.”
A crash echoed from the corridor outside.
Seren stood immediately.
“There’s a stairwell at the end of this room. It leads to the street.”
“Then we go.”
“It’s full of them.”
Kael looked at the hatch through which he’d entered.
Behind it, something scratched at the metal.
“Then we find another way.”
Seren studied him.
“You’re not a fighter.”
“No.”
“You don’t have a class.”
“Not that the System appreciates.”
“And you’re suggesting we walk into a monster-infested station.”
Kael picked up a wrench from the floor.
“I’m suggesting we stop waiting for something to eat us.”
For a moment, she said nothing.
Then she nodded toward the storage room’s far wall.
“There’s a service passage behind those cabinets. It connects to the old platform.”
Kael stood.
“Lead the way.”
They moved the cabinets together, revealing a narrow opening between the pipes. Seren went first, knife raised. Kael followed with the wrench clenched in his hand.
The passage smelled of damp concrete and rust.
Halfway through, his phone vibrated.
[HIDDEN ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED.]
[FIRST DEATH: RECORDED.]
Kael stopped.
He read the notification again.
[DEATH RECORD: 01]
His fingers went cold.
The System wasn’t simply giving him a second chance.
It had recorded the first.
A new message appeared beneath it.
[ANOMALOUS RESTORATION DETECTED.]
[AUDIT STATUS: PENDING.]
The screen went black.
“Kael?” Seren called from ahead.
He forced himself to move.
“Coming.”
They reached the old platform just as the countdown passed eight minutes.
Beyond the tracks, the city burned beneath a sky filled with unfamiliar blue symbols. People ran through the streets. Monsters moved between abandoned cars. Above the rooftops, an enormous black structure rose into the clouds, though Kael was certain it hadn’t existed an hour ago.
He could barely breathe.
Then he saw a child standing alone beside the tracks.
A little girl in a yellow coat.
A Grin Crawler crept along the ceiling directly above her.
Kael looked at the creature.
Then at the girl.
His phone lit up.
[WARNING: HOSTILE APPROACHING.]
[RECOMMENDED ACTION: RETREAT.]
Seren grabbed his sleeve.
“Don’t.”
Kael looked at her.
“We can’t save everyone.”
“I know.”
The girl’s mother screamed from the opposite platform.
The creature dropped.
Kael moved before he could think better of it.
He sprinted toward the child, wrench raised, with no class, no proper weapon, and no idea whether his impossible ability would work a second time.
Behind him, Seren swore and followed.
The System displayed one final message.
[TEMPORAL ANOMALY DETECTED.]
[OBSERVATION HAS BEGUN.]
And somewhere beyond the black spire, something opened its eyes.
To be continue....
