Chapter 1:The Message That Destroyed Everything
Sophia Miller had always believed that the two people closest to her would never be the ones to hurt her
For two years, Daniel Carter had been her boyfriend, her comfort, and the man she imagined spending the rest of her life with. He wasn't rich, and he didn't buy her expensive gifts, but Sophia had never cared about those things. Daniel worked hard as a warehouse worker, and whenever he had money to spare, he made sure she felt loved.
Then there was Jessica Brown, her best friend of eight years.
Jessica knew everything about Sophia. She knew her fears, her dreams, and even the embarrassing little things Sophia had never told anyone else. They had shared clothes, secrets, late-night phone calls, and countless promises that nothing would ever come between them.
Sophia trusted them both with her whole heart.
She never imagined that one day, that same heart would be shattered by the two people she loved most.
It all began on an ordinary Friday evening in Nashville, Tennessee.
Sophia had just returned from work at the small medical clinic where she worked as a receptionist. Her feet hurt, her head ached, and all she wanted was a warm shower and a quiet evening with Daniel.
She checked her phone.
Daniel ❤️: Babe, I'll be coming over later. I miss you.
A smile spread across her face.
Sophia: I miss you too. Don't forget the ice cream you promised me. 😂❤️
Daniel ❤️: I could never forget my baby.
Sophia giggled and dropped her phone onto the bed.
If only she had known that those sweet words were coming from a man who had been lying to her for three months.
An hour later, Daniel arrived at her apartment.
He kissed her forehead, placed a small bag of groceries on the kitchen counter, and wrapped his arms around her waist.
"Hey, beautiful," he whispered.
Sophia leaned against his chest. "You're late."
"I know, baby. Work was crazy today."
She looked up at him. "You look tired."
"I am. You have no idea how stressful things have been lately."
Sophia felt a pang of sympathy. Daniel had complained about work several times that month, and she had been trying to support him however she could.
"Come and sit down," she said gently. "I'll make you something to eat."
Daniel smiled and kissed her cheek.
"You're the best thing that has ever happened to me."
Sophia blushed.
"Stop it."
"What? Can't I tell my girlfriend how much I love her?"
She laughed and pushed him playfully toward the couch.
"Go and sit down before I change my mind about feeding you."
For a moment, everything felt perfect.
They ate dinner together, watched television, and talked about their plans for the future. Daniel even joked about how many children they would have someday.
Sophia laughed at his ridiculous suggestions.
"Three children? Daniel, are you trying to finish me?"
He grinned. "Two, then."
"One."
"Two."
"One and a half."
Daniel burst out laughing.
Sophia loved moments like that. They made her believe that no matter how difficult life became, they would always have each other. After dinner, Daniel went to take a shower.
His phone, which he had been holding almost all evening, was lying on the couch beside Sophia.
Suddenly, it vibrated.
Sophia glanced at it without much interest.
Then another notification appeared.
She wasn't the type of girlfriend who searched through her boyfriend's phone. She believed relationships needed trust, and she had never felt the need to check Daniel's private messages.
But then she saw the name on the screen.
Jessica Brown.
Sophia frowned.
Jessica was her best friend. She and Daniel knew each other well, so a message from her wasn't necessarily strange.
Still, something about the preview made Sophia pause.
She leaned forward slightly.
The message read:
Jessica: Baby, I miss you already. When are you going to tell Sophia about us?
Sophia stopped breathing.
For several seconds, she simply stared at the screen, convinced her eyes were playing tricks on her.
She read the message again.
And again.
Baby?
Tell Sophia about us?
Her fingers began to tremble.
"No," she whispered. "No, this can't be real."
Perhaps Jessica had sent it to the wrong person. Perhaps there was some explanation that would make everything make sense.
Sophia desperately wanted to believe that.
She picked up the phone, her heart pounding so loudly that she could barely hear the television.
The screen was still unlocked.
Another message appeared.
Jessica: I can't keep pretending to be just your girlfriend's best friend. Three months is long enough, Daniel.
Three months.
Sophia felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath her feet.
Three months ago, Daniel had taken her out for her birthday. Three months ago, Jessica had helped her choose an outfit for their romantic dinner. Three months ago, both of them had hugged her, smiled at her, and told her how lucky she was.
Had they already been betraying her then?
Her eyes filled with tears.
She scrolled up, her hands shaking uncontrollably.
There were heart emojis. Romantic messages. Promises to meet when Sophia wasn't around.
Then she saw a photograph.
Jessica and Daniel were standing together in what appeared to be a hotel room. Daniel's arm was wrapped around Jessica's waist, and Jessica was kissing his cheek.
Sophia covered her mouth to stop herself from screaming.
The bathroom door opened.
Daniel walked out, drying his hair with a towel.
"Baby, have you seen my—"
He stopped.
Sophia was sitting on the couch, holding his phone. Tears streamed down her cheeks, and her expression was one he had never seen before.
Daniel's face changed immediately.
"Sophia?"
She slowly lifted her eyes to his.
"How long?"
Daniel didn't answer.
She swallowed painfully.
"Daniel, I asked you a question. How long have you been sleeping with my best friend?"
His mouth opened, but no words came out.
That silence told her everything.
Sophia stood up, holding out the phone.
"Three months?" she whispered. "You've been cheating on me with Jessica for three months, and you still come here, kiss me, tell me you love me, and talk about our future?"
Daniel reached for her.
"Baby, please, let me explain."
"Don't touch me!"
He froze.
Sophia had never spoken to him like that before.
"It wasn't supposed to happen this way," he said desperately. "Sophia, I swear, I never wanted to hurt you."
She laughed bitterly through her tears.
"Then what did you want, Daniel? A girlfriend at home and my best friend in secret?"
"No! It's not like that."
"Then tell me what it's like!"
Daniel rubbed his face and looked away.
"It started when things were difficult at work. I was stressed, and Jessica was there for me. We started talking more, and one thing led to another."
Sophia stared at him in disbelief.
"So when I was working all day and still trying to support you, you were going to Jessica?"
"That's not fair."
"Not fair?" Her voice broke. "You think this is about fairness?"
Tears blurred her vision.
"I defended you when people said we were too young to take our relationship seriously. I believed in you when you didn't believe in yourself. I stood beside you when you had nothing because I loved you."
Daniel stepped closer.
"I know, Sophia. I know how much you've done for me."
"Then why?"
He lowered his head.
For the first time in two years, Sophia looked at the man she loved and felt like she was staring at a complete stranger.
"Do you love her?" Sophia asked quietly.
Daniel looked up.
"Sophia—"
"Answer me! Do you love Jessica?"
He hesitated.
It was only a second, but it was enough.
Sophia nodded slowly as another tear rolled down her cheek.
"Get out."
"Please, baby. Don't do this. We can fix this."
"Fix what?" she cried. "You didn't break a glass, Daniel. You broke my trust. You took two people I loved and turned them into the reason I can barely breathe right now."
"I made a mistake."
"A mistake is forgetting my birthday. A mistake is saying something stupid during an argument. You made a choice. Every single day for three months, you chose to lie to me."
Daniel had no answer.
Sophia walked to the front door and opened it.
"Get out of my house."
He stared at her, hoping she would change her mind.
She didn't.
"Sophia, I love you."
She wiped her tears.
"Then you should have loved me enough not to do this."
Daniel slowly picked up his belongings and walked toward the door.
Before leaving, he turned around one last time.
"I never meant for you to find out like this."
Sophia's heart sank.
Not I never meant to hurt you.
Not I wish I had never done it.
Only that he hadn't wanted her to find out.
She closed the door in his face.
The moment the lock clicked, Sophia collapsed against the wall and began to sob.
Her phone rang.
She barely noticed it until she looked at the screen.
Jessica Calling… ❤️
Sophia stared at her best friend's name.
The same woman who had held her while she cried over her childhood problems. The same woman who had helped her plan her future with Daniel. The same woman who had once promised that no man would ever come between their friendship.
Sophia almost rejected the call.
But then an unfamiliar feeling rose inside her.
She wanted to hear Jessica lie.
She wanted to know whether her best friend would confess or continue pretending that everything was normal.
With trembling fingers, Sophia answered.
"Hey, girl!" Jessica's cheerful voice came through the phone. "What are you doing? I've been trying to reach you all evening!"
Sophia closed her eyes.
Jessica sounded so normal.
So innocent.
As though she hadn't just helped destroy eight years of friendship.
"Jessica," Sophia whispered.
"What's wrong? Why do you sound like you've been crying?"
Sophia took a shaky breath.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Of course, babe. You know you can tell me anything."
A painful laugh escaped Sophia's lips.
Anything.
If only that were true.
"Are you seeing Daniel?"
Silence.
For the first time that evening, Jessica had nothing to say.
Sophia gripped the phone tightly.
"Jessica? I'm waiting."
Finally, her best friend spoke.
"Sophia, please. Just let me explain."
Sophia's entire body went cold.
She hadn't denied it.
She hadn't even pretended to be confused.
She had simply asked for a chance to explain.
And in that moment, Sophia realized something far more painful than losing Daniel.
She hadn't just lost her boyfriend. She had lost the best friend she thought she knew.
But what Sophia didn't know was that Daniel and Jessica were hiding a secret far bigger than their affair.
And when that secret finally came to light, everyone involved would wish the truth had stayed buried.
