The night
The night had turned into a complete disaster.
The four of them had come straight from their respective jobs and somehow ended up at a random party, where one drink had turned into two, two had turned into three, and eventually, none of them could remember who had suggested the idea in the first place.
Now, they were standing outside the nightclub, beneath the neon lights, waiting for a taxi.
EJC and Sophie, however, seemed to have forgotten that the other two existed.
Sophie had both arms wrapped around EJC’s neck, kissing him passionately while he held her waist. Every few seconds, they would pull apart just enough to exchange a few words before kissing again.
Ellie stared at them.
She blinked once.
Then twice.
Finally, she turned her head toward Alexander, who stood beside her with his hands in his pockets, looking thoroughly unimpressed.
“Alexander...”
He didn’t look at her. “What?”
Ellie pointed at the couple. “What are these guys doing?”
Alexander glanced at EJC and Sophie, who were now kissing as though they were the only two people left on the planet.
He scoffed.
“Let them do whatever they want.”
Ellie stared at him in disbelief. “They’re literally eating each other’s faces!”
“Then stop watching them.”
“But—”
“Ellie.”
“What?”
“You’re giving me a headache.”
She gasped dramatically. “You’re giving ME a headache!”
“Wonderful. Now we’re both suffering.”
Ellie narrowed her eyes at him before turning away with an offended huff.
“Rude man.”
Alexander’s lips twitched.
“What was that?”
“Nothing!” she chirped, suddenly innocent.
Without waiting for his response, Ellie stumbled toward the roadside, determined to find a taxi herself.
Unfortunately, her legs appeared to have developed their own independent personalities.
She took one step.
Then another.
Then she swayed dangerously toward the road.
“Taxi!” she called out, raising her hand at a passing vehicle.
Her foot slipped.
“Whoa—!”
Before she could tumble onto the road, an arm wrapped firmly around her waist from behind.
Alexander.
He pulled her backward in one swift movement, his other hand steadying her as she stumbled against him.
Ellie’s eyes widened.
For one brief second, she forgot how to breathe.
Then she realized whose arm was around her.
“LET GO!”
She immediately tried to jerk herself free.
Alexander frowned. “Are you insane? You’re about to fall into the road!”
“I WAS CALLING A TAXI!”
“And the taxi was going to take you straight to the hospital!”
“I CAN WALK!”
“Clearly.”
“Alexander!”
“Ellie!”
She twisted again, determined to escape his hold.
That was a mistake.
Her heel slipped, her balance vanished, and before she could even scream, Alexander caught her properly in his arms.
This time, there was no escaping.
Ellie landed against his chest, her hands instinctively gripping the front of his half-open shirt.
Her lips brushed against his bare chest.
Silence.
Absolute, terrifying silence.
Alexander froze.
Ellie froze.
Even the distant music spilling from the nightclub seemed to fade into the background.
Slowly, Ellie lifted her face.
Alexander was already looking down at her.
Their eyes met.
His expression, usually so composed and annoyingly confident, had changed. His gaze lingered on her face, and for once, he seemed to have forgotten whatever sarcastic remark he was about to make.
Ellie’s heart gave a strange little jump.
Oh, no.
She was drunk.
Very drunk.
Because why else would she suddenly notice how close he was? Or how his shirt smelled faintly of expensive cologne? Or why his hand, resting against her waist to keep her upright, suddenly felt like the most distracting thing in the entire universe?
Alexander tilted his head slightly.
“Finished trying to kill yourself?”
Ellie immediately lowered her eyes.
And just like that, the moment shattered.
“I wasn’t trying to kill myself,” she mumbled.
“Oh? Then what was that? A demonstration of your walking skills?”
She frowned, still refusing to meet his gaze.
“I hate you.”
“That makes two of us.”
“Then why are you holding me?”
Alexander glanced down at his arm, which was still wrapped around her waist.
For a moment, he said nothing.
Then he raised an eyebrow.
“Because you apparently can’t stand without assistance.”
Ellie gasped.
“I CAN STAND!”
“Go ahead.”
He loosened his hold.
Ellie immediately grabbed his shirt.
Alexander looked at her hand.
She looked at her hand.
Neither spoke.
Then Alexander’s mouth curved into the most infuriating smirk she had ever seen.
“Interesting.”
Ellie released his shirt as though it had burned her.
“I WAS JUST—”
“Maintaining your balance?”
“YES!”
“Of course.”
“Stop smiling!”
“I’m not smiling.”
“YOUR FACE IS SMILING!”
Alexander finally laughed.
A quiet, genuine laugh that made Ellie stare at him for a second longer than she intended.
She had seen him annoyed, irritated, sarcastic, and occasionally insufferable.
But she rarely saw him laugh like that.
And for some ridiculous reason, her cheeks grew warm.
She quickly looked away and wriggled out of his arms, managing to stand on her own this time.
“There. See? I can stand.”
Alexander folded his arms across his chest.
“Congratulations. Should I call your family and inform them of this historic achievement?”
Ellie glared at him.
“I hope a mosquito bites your nose.”
“How terrifying.”
“Two mosquitoes!”
“Please, have mercy.”
She stuck her tongue out at him.
Alexander shook his head, smiling faintly as he watched her wobble toward the pavement again.
“Ellie.”
“What now?”
“Stay here.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m getting the taxi.”
“I can get it myself!”
“Absolutely not.”
“You’re not my father!”
“Thank God. I wouldn’t survive a day.”
Ellie opened her mouth to argue, but Alexander had already walked away.
She watched him approach the roadside, one hand slipping into his pocket while the other signaled an approaching taxi.
Then she glanced down at her waist.
The place where his hand had rested still seemed strangely warm.
She pressed her lips together.
Stupid Alexander.
A pause.
Stupid, handsome Alexander.
Her eyes widened.
She immediately slapped both hands over her mouth.
“Oh, my God,” she whispered to herself. “I’m officially drunk.”
Behind her, EJC and Sophie finally separated long enough to notice her standing alone.
Sophie blinked at her flushed face.
“Ellie? Why are you red?”
Ellie spun around.
“I’m NOT red!”
EJC glanced toward Alexander, who was opening the taxi door.
Then he looked back at Ellie.
A slow, mischievous grin spread across his face.
“Ohhh.”
Ellie pointed a threatening finger at him.
“Don’t.”
EJC raised both hands innocently.
“I didn’t say anything.”
“You were about to!”
“But I didn’t.”
Sophie giggled and leaned against EJC’s shoulder.
“Did Alexander carry you?”
Ellie’s jaw dropped.
“HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT?”
Sophie pointed at the nightclub’s glass entrance, which reflected the scene outside.
“We saw him catch you.”
EJC nodded solemnly. “Very romantic, actually.”
“IT WAS NOT ROMANTIC!”
From beside the taxi, Alexander called out, “Ellie! Are you getting in, or should I leave you here with your two favorite idiots?”
Ellie turned toward him.
“YOU’RE THE BIGGEST IDIOT!”
“Get in the taxi, Ellie.”
She stomped toward him, muttering every insult she could remember.
But when she reached the open door, Alexander held out his hand to help her inside.
She stared at it.
Then at him.
His expression was perfectly neutral now, as though the moment earlier had meant absolutely nothing.
“Come on,” he said. “Before you fall again.”
Ellie hesitated before placing her hand in his.
His fingers closed gently around hers.
And despite all her complaints, she let him help her into the taxi.
Alexander shut the door and walked around to the other side.
Ellie watched him through the window, her chin resting against her palm.
She had absolutely no idea what tomorrow would bring.
But one thing was certain.
She was never drinking again.
At least, not until she forgot how embarrassingly handsome Alexander looked under nightclub lights.
Sophie and EJC didn’t need to find a taxi. They turned into a small, dark street as they always did, running together like a pair of carefree lovers. Their clothes were scattered along the street, leaving no trace of them except the faint mist that disappeared into the air, whether toward the ground or the sky.
Inside the taxi, Alexander received a missed call. His mother’s name appeared on the screen. He declined the call and put his phone on silent mode. As always, she wanted him to find a life partner from their pack. Alexander didn’t like the idea of Sophie becoming his mate. He didn’t like her that way, while Sophie and EJC liked each other, keeping their relationship hidden from the pack.
Ellie was drunk and had fallen asleep against his shoulder. Alexander directed the taxi driver to take them to the usual hotel.
They had known each other since college. Sophie and EJC had been their friends, too, but their jobs had eventually separated them. Alexander was a professor teaching PhD students, while EJC and Sophie worked in university management at the same level, under one roof. Ellie worked as a roving teacher, checking university schedules, lectures, and overall academic activities.
Whenever Ellie got drunk and lost control, Alexander was the one who took care of her and dropped her off at her hotel.
But no one knew that he had liked her since their college days.
After all, Ellie belonged to the human world.
The car stopped in front of the hotel.
Alexander shook Ellie gently, trying to wake her up, but she was still fast asleep. And, of course, she was drunk.
“Ellie, wake up. We’re here,” he said, shaking her shoulder again.
She barely moved.
With a sigh, Alexander got out of the taxi, opened her door, and helped her out. He made sure she was standing on her own two feet before turning to pay the driver.
However, the moment he turned his back, Ellie leaned against him.
Alexander paid the driver in a hurry.
“Keep the change,” he said, handing him the money before turning back to Ellie.
She immediately lost her balance and fell against his arm.
He looked down at her face. Her cheeks were flushed from drinking so much wine, and her eyes were barely open.
“Seriously, Ellie?” he muttered.
Without wasting another second, he lifted her into his arms and carried her into the hotel.
He took the elevator to the twenty-third floor and stopped in front of room 69. Since it was her birthday in 1996, he entered the password, and the door unlocked.
Alexander pushed the door open, stepped inside, and used his shoulder to switch on the light.
He carefully placed Ellie on her bed before slipping the bag off his shoulder and setting it on the bedside table.
He had barely straightened up when Ellie suddenly sat up and wrapped her arms around him.
She hugged him tightly, resting her head on his shoulder.
“Why do you always leave me?” she mumbled.
Alexander looked down at her.
“Because you’re my friend, of course.”
“No,” she whispered.
She lifted her head and looked up at his face. Although she was sitting on the bed, her head barely reached his shoulders when he stood beside her. He was still considerably taller than her.
“You smell like cologne,” she murmured.
“And you smell like wine,” he replied.
He sighed. she gently patted her head, and then held her hair back with both hands.
“I think I need to take a shower,” Ellie announced.
Before Alexander could respond, she began removing her clothes.
His eyes widened.
“What are you doing, Ellie?”
“I’m going to take a shower.” She glanced at him. “Will you please leave?”
“Okay. Should I help you get to the bathroom?”
“I can walk to the bathroom.”
“Okay, then. Bye.”
Alexander turned and walked towards the door.
But just as he reached it, he heard a faint beeping sound, as though someone was trying to unlock her room from outside.
He immediately rushed to the door and pulled it open.
There was no one there.
Alexander stepped into the hallway and looked around. He was certain he had heard something.
His instincts sharpened. He tried to catch a familiar scent, wondering whether someone from his pack had been nearby, but he detected nothing that gave him a clear answer.
With a frown, h returned to the room and closed the door.
When he turned around, he found Ellie still struggling with the hooks of her bra.
He froze for a moment.
His breathing grew heavier, and his chest rose and fell more rapidly. He forced himself to look away, struggling to control the thoughts rushing through his mind.
*Get a grip, Alexander.*
He pressed his palm against his forehead and shook his head, trying to regain his composure.
Then he grabbed a towel, wrapped it around Ellie, and lifted her into his arms.
He carried her into the bathroom and placed her carefully on her feet, keeping his back turned towards her.
“Take your shower, and then call me. I’ll help you get back to bed,” he said.
“But I can’t reach the hooks of my bra,” Ellie complained. “Please help me open them.”
Before he could answer, she turned around, her eyes closed as she fumbled behind her back, trying unsuccessfully to find the hooks.
Alexander hesitated before reaching out to help her.
His hand accidentally brushed against her buttocks.
“Sorry!” he blurted out immediately.
“Go up,” she mumbled, still struggling to find the hooks.
He carefully moved his hand higher, but his fingers brushed against her spine. The brief contact sent a tremor through his hands.
He squeezed his eyes shut.
Even with his eyes closed, he was painfully aware of how close they were standing.
“Left,” Ellie instructed sleepily.
Alexander shifted his hand in the direction she indicated until he finally found the hooks.
He unclasped them and immediately stepped away.
“I’m done,” he said, his voice noticeably strained.
Without waiting for a response, he walked out of the bathroom and shut the door behind him.
His breathing was still heavy. He felt uncomfortably warm and clenched his jaw, forcing himself to calm down.
He turned towards the mirror facing the bed and planted both hands on the table beneath it.
His reflection stared back at him.
His eyes had begun to turn red.
“Shit. Control yourself,” he growled under his breath.
He lowered his head, hit his forehead with his palm, and struggled to rein in the beast stirring inside him.
Then, suddenly, he heard Ellie scream from the bathroom.
Alexander's head snapped up.
