Summary

Crescent University has a secret in its basement. Shay Hartwell is about to become its favorite meal. Shay Hartwell has everything money can buy and nothing she actually wants. Her political dynasty of a family looks straight through her at the breakfast table, and now her grandmother is trading her to the Wilsons in a marriage that would turn her into a decoration. Her one escape is Crescent University, where she is a psychology major with her eyes on the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit. Then the boy she has loved for months stays silent when she finally confesses. Beneath the campus, Principal Radcliffe's family has kept a centuries-old bargain: feed the creature in the basement human fear, grief, and despair, and the world stays safe. But he has run out of victims, and the creature is done waiting. Adrian walks out free. He follows the scent of heartbreak to an abandoned music room, where a girl is crying on the floor, and she is exactly the feast he came looking for. Instead, for the first time in centuries, he wants to keep something. He transfers into her literature class under a fake name, with a forged transcript and a terrified principal covering for him. He is charming, attentive, and the first person to ever take her side. Shay, who can profile a stranger in minutes, is starting to suspect that the one person making her feel safe is the most dangerous thing on campus.

Prologue

Mr. Radcliffe

"You're sure about this? I just have to go down there and you'll get me in?"

The girl stared at me, doubt flickering across her face.

I nodded. "Of course. Now hurry up."

Her brow furrowed. "Can't someone else retrieve the files?"

I let my expression harden. "It sounds like you don't want admission to Crescent University."

"I do want it, Mr. Radcliffe."

"Then go inside and get me those files."

She opened her mouth, then closed it. Of course she did. Students like her would do anything for a spot at a prestigious university. Anything I asked.

She turned toward the stairs leading down to the basement. Narrow steps, slick with moisture. Moss and fungi crawled up the walls. Cobwebs stretched across the darkness below.

I checked my watch.

"We don't have all night."

She flinched, then nodded. Clicking on her flashlight, she pushed through the webs and descended. The beam of light bounced off the walls as she moved deeper.

The moment she disappeared from view, I closed the door.

Her scream came almost immediately. Sharp. Terrified.

I walked away from the basement, my footsteps echoing through the empty hallway. Behind me, her screams grew more desperate. Then came the final one, wet and strangled.

Then silence.

I exited through the university gates and turned back to look at Crescent University. Moonlight caught the Gothic spires, the manicured lawns, the pristine facade.

No one would ever suspect what lived in the basement.

ktkirata: The story is really interesting. How the character described in the story is like you can see them and picture how they move, talk and feel in the every plots. Well done writer and keep it up.

PARIS IN THE DARK

Hester: Very good, was short too the point , not lingering on the abuse, pity you didn’t let him step in earlier knowing the abuse was happening, but this is almost real for some women who have gone through it, just wish they could all have a princess at te end of thete tunnel

Bloodlines

lblomme: I always love a story where good overcomes evil. The sad start, the growth, and ultimate strength of the main character was well done. The story never lagged and ultimately delivered a happy ending even for characters who were less than stellar. Well done!
