Chapter 1. The Stranger on the Road
Chidi looked at the sky. It was getting dark, and his mother had told him to come home early.
He wanted to continue walking.
Then he remembered his mother's words.
He put down his schoolbag and began gathering the oranges.
“Thank you, my child,” the old man said. “You are the first person who has stopped to help me today.”
Chidi smiled. “It is okay, sir. Anyone could need help someday.”
After collecting the oranges, Chidi helped the man carry his basket to a nearby house.
Before they separated, the old man placed his hand gently on Chidi's shoulder.
“Never believe that you are too small to make a difference,” he said.
Chidi thanked him and hurried home.
That night, as he ate dinner, he told his mother everything.
She smiled proudly.
“Now you understand a little more about kindness,” she said.
