Prologue
I wake up to the smell of coffee.
For a second, I think I am still dreaming but when I open my eyes I realize I must have fallen asleep on the couch surrounded by files from DC Group.
My neck aches and my body doesn’t feel any different, just heavy from too many thoughts.
I spent the whole night reading about the late Chrisma Daka, the man whose death changed everything. My internship at his company was supposed to be the start of something new. Instead, it feels like I have stepped into the ruins of someone else’s life.
I reach for the letter I was reading before sleep claimed me. The brown envelope sits where I left it, its edges slightly crumpled. I trace the handwriting for what must be the hundredth time.
“To Saji Zombe. In the event of my death.”
I slide the letter out again half-hoping that maybe this time the words will read differently, that maybe I misunderstood. But they haven’t changed.
“If you are reading this, then the house has fallen. Protect what is left. And when the time comes, do not let blood decide what is right.”
I fold it neatly and press it against my chest. The words feel heavier now and somewhere deep within me I know this is the beginning of something dangerous.
I just don’t know how dangerous it truly is.
