Introduction
**Introduction — Winter's Finding: The Cold Frontier**
There is a place where the snow never fully melts, where the pines grow tall and straight as cathedral columns, and where the winter does not forgive the unready. The trappers call it the Cold Frontier. The traders mark it on their maps with a warning. The wolves simply call it home.
This is a story about finding and keeping.
Avr was born to find. He is the fourth generation of finders in the Alden line — men who could locate anything lost: a missing child, a vanished expedition, a cache of furs buried under three winters of snow. Anything, the family joke went, except their own way home. Avr learned to read the land the way other men read books. A bent twig. A shift in the wind. The particular silence that falls before a storm. When a trading company hires him to locate an expedition that vanished into the white, he takes the job without hesitation. It is what Aldens do. He does not know that this finding will change everything.
Sonja was born to keep. Her blood runs with the wolf, generation upon generation, back to the first Mercy Ground pack. Her grandmother ran with wolves. Her mother named the covenant that governs them all: *We do not cage what we were asked to shelter. We find what was lost. We keep what was found. And we never, ever do it alone.* Sonja is a Wolf-Warden, and she takes the covenant as seriously as breath. When a pack goes silent in the deep winter, she follows their tracks into the white. It is what keepers do. She does not know that this keeping will change everything.
They begin separate. This is important. Avr has his signs. Sonja has her tracks. He works the valleys; she works the high cold. They are two professionals doing their jobs in the same vast wilderness, unaware of each other, unaware that the frontier is about to bring them together in the way the frontier always does — by force, by cold, by necessity.
For the winter is coming. Not the ordinary winter, but the deep one, the killing one, the kind the old trappers speak of in low voices. And when it comes, Avr and Sonja will be forced into the same shelter, the same fire, the same survival. He will meet her covenant — not as words, but as winter itself. She will meet his transformation — not as a story, but as truth.
This is not a story about trails or challenges or choices. There are no games here. The wolves walk straight narrative, the way wolves walk: forward, together, through whatever the wild puts in front of them.
This is a story about what it means to find something and what it means to keep it. About the difference between locating a thing and holding it. Avr can find anything — but can he keep what he finds? Sonja can keep anything — but what happens when keeping means letting go?
Their families will come into it. His Alden line, with its four generations of finding. Her wolf line, with its ancient covenant. Her two teams — twelve keepers, all kin. His friends, his story. And at the center of it all, when the time comes, a wedding — officiated by one who has seen love survive every winter.
The Cold Frontier is only the beginning. Beyond it lies the Arctic, white and endless. Beyond that, the modern wild, shrinking but defiant. And beyond that, mysteries that even wolves cannot scent their way through — not at first.
Four books. Four wilds. Three thousand six hundred chapters. This is Book One.
Welcome to the finding. Welcome to the keeping. Welcome to the wolves.
