Chapter 1
The blood looked almost too bright against my skin as I washed it off of my hands. The sunken eyes of the girl in front of me gave away her exhaustion. Her bones felt so heavy her frame slouched , struggling against gravity to stay upright.
"You need to sleep" I tell my reflection as I turn the tap off. The lack of sleep had caused me to clumsily cut my finger and paint what was about to be my meal, red.
I ransacked my cupboard in a failed attempt at retrieving a bandaid while my finger still bled lightly. Giving up the endeavour altogether I went to the kitchen to put a heap of turmeric to the cut and winced at the anticipated sting. I wish ma was here I caught myself thinking.
My phone dinged interrupting my train of thought. It's almost 11 o'clock at night.I still needed to eat and bloody patatoes didn't seem very appetizing so I ordered food instead. What followed was a long wait which had me checking my phone every few minutes. Waiting for my food I discovered, a minute does not pass sooner if you count the seconds.
It must be long past 11 ,when the doorbell rang, which had me almost running to the door.
I opened the door to be faced with a man who, instead of the much awaited food, was carrying something else entirely. Something that stopped me dead in my tracks.Suddenly all air was sucked out of my lungs. The walls closed in on me and the world felt off balance. My heart sank as I stared,at that object, that harmless looking object in front of me. I tentatively reached out and took it from his impatient hands. It was a bouquet; no, it was the bouquet.
