After Hours
The rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows of Nathaniel’s corner office, casting streaks of water down the glass like tears. Inside, the air was thick with tension and the scent of expensive whiskey and paper. Elena Marlowe stood before the massive board displaying their acquisition proposal, her fingers tracing the projected revenue streams with professional intensity. Her tailored navy blue suit clung to her frame, the sharp lines of her blouse accentuating her posture of command.
“Your risk assessment is overly conservative,” Nathaniel said, his voice low and measured as he circled her like a predator. At 35, he carried himself with a controlled power that had made him a formidable presence in the financial world. His suit, charcoal gray and impeccably cut, emphasized the breadth of his shoulders and the confident set of his jaw. “The market data supports a higher projection.”
Elena didn’t turn around. “With that level of optimism, we’re setting ourselves up for failure. I’ve seen what happens when we overextend based on wishful thinking.” Her dark eyes remained fixed on the numbers, her expression unreadable behind her professional mask. “My calculations account for the volatility we’ve been seeing in the sector.”
Nathaniel stopped directly behind her, close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his body. “Your calculations also account for your personal fear of taking risks.”
The words hung in the air between them, charged with more than professional disagreement. Elena finally turned to face him, her dark eyes meeting his intense gaze. “And your projections account for your personal need to prove you’re right about everything.”
A muscle twitched in Nathaniel’s jaw. “I don’t have time for your psychological games, Elena. Not tonight.”
“Nor do I have time for yours, Nathaniel.” She stepped closer, reducing the distance between them to mere inches. “But since we’re being honest, perhaps we should acknowledge that our professional relationship has been complicated from the beginning.”
Thunder rumbled outside, illuminating the city skyline for a split second. The storm seemed to mirror the electricity crackling between them.
“You’re the only person in this firm who challenges me without fear,” Nathaniel admitted, his voice dropping to almost a whisper. “The only one who sees through my bullshit.”
Elena’s breath hitched slightly. “And you’re the only one who makes me question my own judgment.”
Their faces were inches apart now, the professional distance completely dissolved. Nathaniel’s hand came up to trace the line of her jaw, his thumb brushing lightly against her lower lip.
“I shouldn’t want you,” he murmured. “Not professionally. Not personally.”
“But you do,” Elena finished for him, her voice barely audible. “And I shouldn’t want you either. But I do.”
The admission hung in the air between them, heavy with implications. Outside, lightning flashed again, casting shadows across their faces.
Nathaniel closed the remaining distance, pressing her back against the cool glass of the window. His body pinned hers, the hard planes of his chest meeting the soft curves of her breasts. Elena gasped as his mouth crashed down on hers, hungry and demanding.
The kiss was desperate, years of suppressed desire pouring out in that moment. Nathaniel’s tongue forced its way into her mouth, exploring with a ferocity that left Elena breathless. She responded with equal passion, her hands gripping his lapels and pulling him closer.
Rain continued to streak down the window behind them, blurring the city lights into a watercolor of colors. The glass was cool against Elena’s back, a stark contrast to the heat building between their bodies.
Nathaniel’s hands roamed over her body, tracing the lines of her suit with increasing urgency. He fumbled with the buttons of her blouse, his fingers clumsy with need.
“God, I’ve wanted this for so long,” he whispered against her lips, his voice thick with desire. “Wanted you.”
Elena moaned as his hand slipped inside her blouse, his palm rough against her skin. “Me too,” she admitted, her head falling back as he kissed along her jawline. “But we can’t—”
“We can,” Nathaniel insisted, his hand sliding up to cup her breast through her lace bra. “We will.”
The storm raged outside, mirroring the tempest inside the office. As Nathaniel’s mouth returned to hers, Elena knew there was no turning back. Their professional boundaries had been shattered, replaced by a hunger that neither could deny.
