Ruby's terrible Day

Ruby Page stared at the blinking red light of her coffee maker as if it had personally insulted her ancestors.

"Don't you dare," she muttered, jabbing the start button with a finger stained blue from a malfunctioning office printer cartridge.

The machine sputtered, let out a pathetic wheeze of steam, and went completely dark.

Ruby let out a low groan that came straight from the soles of her worn-out sneakers. Monday morning had arrived like a physical blow, and the universe seemed determined to test every single nerve in her body before she even made it out of her cramped apartment.

She checked her phone. Seven-fifteen. If she didn't leave in twenty minutes, she’d miss the bus, which meant taking a cab, which meant blowing the twenty dollars she had painstakingly set aside for groceries this week.

"Fine. Cold water and bad choices. My favorite breakfast," she muttered to the empty kitchen, rubbing her temples where a dull, throbbing headache was staging a full-scale protest.

Life at twenty-six was not living up to the glossy brochures. Between the sky-high rent for a studio apartment where the window faced a brick wall and a soul-crushing administrative job at a mid-tier logistics firm where her boss treated her like an office fixture, Ruby was running on fumes. Her real dream—launching her own independent design and branding agency—felt less like a tangible goal and more like a cruel joke she played on herself when she needed hope to fall asleep.

Ten minutes later, she was rushing out the door, pulling a beige trench coat over a sleek black dress that she had bought on clearance three years ago. It clung to her curves in all the right places, making her look far more put-together than she actually felt. A quick swipe of mascara, a slash of berry lipstick to hide the exhaustion, and she was out into the brisk autumn air.

The commute was a masterpiece of misery. A delayed subway, a rude commuter who stepped on her heel without apologizing, and an email notification from her landlord hinting at a rent increase next month. By the time Ruby swiped her ID card at the glass turnstiles of Apex Logistics, she looked like she had wrestled a bear and lost.

"Morning, Ruby," chirped Marcus, the receptionist, as she practically dragged herself past the front desk. "You look... vibrant."

"Liar," Ruby shot back without breaking stride, offering a tight, exhausted smile. "If anyone asks for me today, tell them I've relocated to a quiet monastery in the Himalayas."

Her cubicle was a fortress of sticky notes and passive-aggressive reminder memos. For the next eight hours, she drowned in a sea of spreadsheets, frantic emails from regional managers who couldn't read basic PDF attachments, and a shouting match with an IT guy who insisted the printer jam was somehow her fault.

When the clock finally struck five, Ruby felt like she had been run over by a steamroller. Her feet ached, her back was stiff, and the last thing on earth she wanted to do was get dressed up and go out.

Yet, as she dragged herself back to her apartment, her phone buzzed incessantly in her coat pocket.

Chloe: DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT FLAKING.

Chloe: It’s my dirty thirty, Ruby! The VIP booth is booked, the champagne is chilling, and you promised. Wear the black dress!

Ruby groaned aloud on the sidewalk, earning a strange look from a passing businessman walking a pug. She had promised. Chloe had been her ride-or-die since college, sticking by her through terrible ramen diets, disastrous breakups, and late-night panic attacks over rent. Missing her birthday was a crime punishable by eternal guilt.

"One drink," Ruby told her reflection in the glass door of her building lobby as she unlocked the front entrance. "I’ll go, I’ll drink one very expensive club soda with lime, I’ll sing 'Happy Birthday,' and I’ll be back in bed by ten."

Forty-five minutes later, she was standing in front of her tiny bathroom mirror, staring at her reflection with deep regret. The black dress actually did look incredible—hugging her waist, falling just above her knees, with a neckline that showed off just enough collarbone to be dangerous without crossing into corporate HR nightmares. She had swept her dark, wavy hair up into a messy, elegant knot with a few strands framing her face.

She looked sharp. Edgy. Completely untamed by the disaster of a day she had just endured.

"Alright, universe," she whispered to the empty room, grabbing her small leather clutch. "Let’s get this over with."

The Crimson Lotus was not the kind of club Ruby frequented. It was an ultra-exclusive lounge hidden behind an unmarked black door in the city's financial district, guarded by bouncers who looked like they moonlighted as professional cage fighters.

The moment Ruby pushed past the heavy velvet curtains, a wall of sensory overload hit her. The air thrummed with deep, pulsing bass that vibrated straight through the soles of her heels. Neon lights in shades of violet, emerald, and electric blue bled through thick clouds of vanilla-scented fog, casting dramatic shadows over a crowd of impeccably dressed, painfully wealthy people.

It was loud, chaotic, and intoxicating.

"Ruby!"

A shriek cut through the noise, and suddenly Chloe was there, grabbing her hands and spinning her around. Chloe looked radiant in a sequined gold dress, her cheeks flushed with champagne and adrenaline.

"You came! I knew you wouldn't let me down!" Chloe yelled over the music, pulling Ruby into a tight hug.

"I told you I would," Ruby laughed, letting herself be dragged toward a plush VIP booth situated on a raised platform overlooking the main dance floor. "Happy birthday, sweetie. You look stunning."

"Save your compliments for the bar, because we are doing shots immediately," Chloe declared, shoving a crystal flute of amber champagne into her hand.

For the next hour, Ruby let the alcohol and the energy of the room wash over her. She danced, laughed at Chloe’s wild stories about her new coworkers, and let the crushing weight of her bills and boss fade into the background. The music was a steady, addictive heartbeat, and for a little while, she felt light.

Around ten-thirty, the heat in the VIP section became a bit suffocating. The crowd had swelled, bodies pressing close together on the dance floor below. Ruby excused herself from the table, weaving through the pulsing mass of people toward the quieter corridor near the back where the restrooms and private lounges were located.

The air here was cooler, smelling faintly of expensive cedarwood, leather, and something else—something sharp and electric, like ozone after a summer thunderstorm.

Ruby paused near a massive marble pillar, taking a deep breath to steady herself as a sudden, strange dizziness washed over her. It wasn't the champagne; it was sharper, a sudden spike in her pulse that made the hairs on the back of her arms stand up.

A low murmur of conversation drifted from a semi-private alcove to her right.

"I don't care about the northern territory, Dean. If they cross the line again, we tear up the treaty," a deep, gravelly voice rated with cold, absolute authority.

Ruby blinked, tilting her head. The man speaking sounded like he commanded armies by breakfast.

"Relax, Alpha. You're always looking for a war," a second voice chimed in, smooth, rich, and dripping with an easy, mocking amusement. "Some of us prefer a more... delicate approach. Why fight when you can simply take what you want with a smile?"

"Because some things aren't meant to be played with, Seth," a third voice interrupted, light, teasing, and laced with a reckless, wicked edge. "Though I have to admit, watching you try and fail to charm someone would be the highlight of my week."

Ruby frowned, stepping slightly closer out of pure, unadulterated curiosity. Who talked like they owned an entire city in the middle of a trendy nightclub?

She rounded the edge of the marble pillar, intending to give whoever was blocking the private hallway a piece of her mind, when her foot caught on the plush edge of the runner rug.

Her balance vanished instantly.

A sharp gasp escaped her lips as she tipped forward, expecting a hard landing against the polished stone floor.

Instead, strong hands caught her.

Not just hands—a sudden, overwhelming rush of heat and scent enveloped her senses. It was an intoxicating blend of pine, aged whiskey, and raw, predatory power.

Ruby’s breath hitched in her throat. She snapped her eyes upward, her sharp tongue ready to snap at whoever had grabbed her, only to freeze completely.

Standing right in front of her, holding her effortlessly against his solid chest, was a man who looked like he had stepped straight out of a dark mythology textbook. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and immaculately tailored in a dark charcoal suit that couldn't completely disguise the dangerous, coiled muscle beneath. His hair was dark, cropped close, and his jawline was carved from granite. But it was his eyes—a striking, luminous amber that gleamed in the dim neon light—that pinned her in place.

He was staring down at her with an intensity that felt less like surprise and more like a predator finding prey it had been hunting for miles.

And then, above his shoulder, two other pairs of eyes locked onto her.

One man leaned against the wall with a slow, predatory smile, his pale skin and dark, alluring gaze radiating effortless, dangerous charm. The other stood slightly to the side, a wicked smirk playing on his lips, his eyes sparkling with chaotic, reckless amusement.

The moment their eyes met hers, the air in the hallway seemed to thicken, pressing down on Ruby's chest with sudden, electric weight.

The cold, commanding man holding her didn't let go. In fact, his fingers tightened almost imperceptibly around her waist, his chest rising and falling heavily as a deep, primal growl vibrated low in his throat.

Ruby’s heart slammed against her ribs. Every instinct screamed at her to pull away, to run back to the safety of the crowded dance floor. But as she looked into those intense, impossible amber eyes, something ancient and wild woke up deep inside her blood.

The night was just beginning, and nothing would ever be the same again.
