Chapter 1 Confessions Under the Golden Canteen

The morning sun of a fresh academic year streamed through the sprawling glass windows of Class 9-A. The familiar wooden desks seemed slightly larger, the ceiling fans hummed a slightly different tune, and the hallway chatter carried a subtle undertone of maturity. They were no longer the vibrant eighth-graders navigating initial middle-school crushes and pop quizzes; they were ninth-graders now, standing on the threshold of high school.

Near the central window row, bathed in the amber light of an early autumn morning, sat the heart of Class 9-A—the SARA Squad.

Sara adjusted her neatly pinned pink headscarf, her eyes scanning her fresh Class 9 syllabus binder. Across from her, Ayesha was neatly aligning her highlighters by pastel color gradients, her sharp eyes taking in the newly posted senior academic schedule. Next to them, Anaya was absently spinning a sleek new mechanical pencil, her eyes darting repeatedly toward the back door of the classroom. beside Anaya sat Riya, gently opening a fresh sketchbook, her fingers tracing the crisp white pages with familiar artistic grace.

"I’m telling you, squad," Anaya began, breaking the silence with her signature flair, "ninth grade feels different. The air feels heavier. The syllabus looks three times thicker. And why is the hallway suddenly full of taller people?"

Ayesha didn't look up from her timetable, though a small smirk tugged at her lips. "That's because the tenth and eleventh graders share our wing this year, Anaya. And the syllabus isn't heavier—it's just structured."

"Easy for you to say, Miss Walking Encyclopedia," Anaya sighed dramatically, resting her chin in her hands. "I just hope Mr. Vikram doesn't start Physics with numerical problems on day one."

"Riya, did you see the new art studio setup on the third floor?" Sara asked with a warm smile, turning to Riya to ease Anaya's dramatic tension. "They added glass display cabinets for senior projects."

Riya blushed softly, her eyes sparkling. "Yes! Mrs. Nusrat mentioned we might get dedicated studio slots after school this term. I can't wait."

Before Anaya could launch into another theatrical monologue about ninth-grade workload, the classroom door clicked open.

Class Teacher Mr. Vikram Sharma stepped inside, carrying a stack of pristine attendance registers and course outlines. The class stood up in disciplined unison, their greeting ringing clearly through the room.

"Good morning, Class 9-A!" Mr. Vikram greeted warmly, gesturing for them to sit. "Welcome to a pivotal year. Today, we begin with orientation, seating allocations, and setting our academic goals for the upcoming inter-school exhibition."

As the morning orientation flew by in a blur of course overviews, elective choices, and schedule distribution, the bell for recess finally rang out—a crisp, high-pitched chime that signaled their long-awaited break.

The school canteen was buzzing with energy as ninth-graders flooded the counters. The warm aroma of freshly toasted buns, spiced samosas, and warm vegetable rolls filled the air.

Sara, carrying a tray loaded with four hot grilled sandwiches and cold mango juices, navigated through the bustling crowd toward their signature spot—the sunlit corner booth right beneath the ancient banyan tree window.

"Victory lunch for surviving the First Day Orientation!" Sara declared, placing the tray in the middle of the wooden table.

"Sara, you remain our undisputed squad leader and hero," Anaya cheered, immediately unwrapping her sandwich.

The four best friends tucked in, enjoying the familiar warmth of their bond. Around them, the canteen hummed with familiar faces—Aarav, Advik, Dev, and Kian were huddled near the sports board discussing senior basketball trials, while Zoya and Zara were comparing elective choices nearby.

However, as the conversation flowed, Sara noticed a distinct, nervous energy hanging over the table. Anaya was fidgeting with her straw, Riya was unusually quiet, staring into her juice box, and even Ayesha kept adjusting her notebook with subtle, uncharacteristic hesitation.

Sara set her sandwich down, her intuitive squad-leader instincts kicking in instantly. She looked at her three best friends, leaning slightly across the table.

"Okay," Sara said, her voice soft yet firm, carrying a fond, knowing smile. "Out with it. All three of you have been acting like you're holding onto a top-secret state file since morning assembly."

Anaya froze mid-bite, her cheeks instantly flushing a bright, rosy pink. Riya looked up timidly, her fingers twisting her napkin, while Ayesha adjusted her scarf, clearing her throat with rare self-consciousness.

"Well..." Anaya whispered, glancing around frantically to make sure no one nearby was listening. She leaned into the center of the table, lowering her voice to a barely audible murmur. "Since we're officially in Class 9 now... and since we promised no secrets in the SARA Squad..."

Ayesha raised an eyebrow, though her own cheeks carried a faint, unusual flush. "Anaya, if you're about to talk about Dhruv again—"

"It's not just about Dhruv!" Anaya squeaked softly, hiding her blushing face behind her hands before peeking through her fingers. "I mean... yes! Okay! My crush on Dhruv is still very much at 100% capacity! He sent me a text on Sunday wishing me good luck for Class 9 chemistry, okay?! I almost dropped my phone!"

Sara bit her lip to hold back a giggle. "We knew about Dhruv, Anaya! That’s last year’s news!"

"Wait!" Anaya sat up straight, her eyes widening as she turned her gaze toward Riya and Ayesha. "What about you two?! Riya! You’ve been staring at the door every time someone from Ruby House walks past!"

Riya gasped softly, her face turning as red as a strawberry. She hastily hid her face behind her sketchbook, her voice muffled. "Anaya! Keep your voice down!"

"Wait, what?!" Sara’s eyes widened with genuine, delightful surprise. She turned to Riya. "Riya?! You have a crush?!"

Riya slowly lowered her sketchbook, her eyes sweet and timid as she looked at her three best friends. "It's... it's Kian," she confessed in a whisper, her hands covering her glowing cheeks. "During the Inter-House Quiz prep last term... when he helped me organize the art historical timelines... he was just so thoughtful and encouraging. And... he brought me a set of calligraphy ink bottles on my birthday..."

"KIAN?!" Anaya gasped loudly, before Ayesha instantly clapped a hand over Anaya's mouth.

"Shh!" Ayesha hissed, though her own eyes were wide with shock. "Do you want the whole canteen to hear?"

Sara clutched her hands together, her heart melting at Riya’s sweet confession. "Riya, that is adorable! Kian is so polite and supportive!"

"See?!" Anaya mumbled from behind Ayesha's hand. Once Ayesha released her, Anaya grinned triumphantly. "I knew it! My squad intuition never fails!"

Then, Anaya turned her sharp, inquisitive gaze directly onto Ayesha. The table fell into a sudden, thrilling silence.

Ayesha, the ever-composed, logical, top-scoring strategist of Class 9-A, suddenly found herself under the squad spotlight. She slowly set her juice box down, her posture rigid, though the deep red blush spreading across her ears betrayed her completely.

"Ayesha..." Sara whispered, leaning in with absolute fascination. "Don't tell me..."

"There is nothing to tell," Ayesha said quickly, adjusting her glasses with clinical precision. "I am focusing strictly on my Class 9 board preparation and the upcoming Science Olympiad."

"Ayesha Verma," Anaya said, leaning across the table until she was inches away, a mischievous, unstoppable smirk on her face. "You literally froze when Aarav walked past our table with the basketball form five minutes ago. And don't think I didn't see you bookmarking his science fair presentation article last month!"

Ayesha pressed her lips together, her logical defense crumbling under the relentless gaze of her three best friends. She buried her face in her hands, letting out a long, defeated sigh that made Sara and Riya instantly break into soft, delighted gasps.

"It is... purely an appreciation for his competitive intellect," Ayesha murmured into her hands, her voice completely stripped of its usual crisp authority. "Aarav is... remarkably sharp in physics. And... he saved me a front-row seat during the preliminary robotics seminar when I was running late."

"AARAV?!" Anaya practically vibrated in her seat, clutching Sara’s arm in sheer, unadulterated joy. "Ayesha has a crush on Aarav! The two top scorers of Class 9! This is legendary!"

Sara shook her head, a deep, overwhelming warmth filling her chest as she looked at her three best friends—Anaya with her vibrant, open heart; Riya with her gentle, romantic soul; and Ayesha, sharp and brilliant, hiding her shy feelings behind academic logic.

"Oh goodness," Sara laughed softly, wrapping her arms around all three of them as they huddled together in the sunlit corner booth. "Look at us. Class 9 has barely started, and the SARA Squad is already deep in dramatic romance!"

"Hey!" Anaya laughed, hugging Sara back while playfully nudging Ayesha. "It's not drama, Sara! It's squad solidarity!"

"Just promise me," Ayesha said, regaining her composure with a playful smirk as she wiped a tear of laughter from her eye, "that none of this interferes with our Class 9 group projects."

"Deal!" Riya and Anaya chorused happily.

As the afternoon sun cast a bright, golden canopy through the banyan tree window, lighting up their corner table, the four best friends shared a warm, unstoppable wave of laughter.

New grade, higher stakes, and brand-new secrets—but no matter what Class 9 had in store, the SARA Squad was ready to conquer it all, side by side.
