CHAPTER ONE: BENEATH THE DEAD WORLD
The world had forgotten the color blue.
Above the wastes, the sky burned red-orange, veined with black clouds and distant rivers of lightning. Ash drifted over the ruins of cities that had once reached toward the stars. The oceans had retreated from their shores, leaving salt deserts and fields of cracked glass. At night, the ground glowed in places where the planet’s wounded heart showed through.
Far beneath that dead surface, something remembered.
In a chamber buried under layers of stone, a throne stood among pillars of black mineral. Its occupant had slept for ages. Plates of obsidian covered his body, joined by seams of ember-orange light. A crown of jagged crystal rose from his head. He was enormous, yet still compared with the statues carved around him.
His name was Vorakh.
Once, he had commanded a legion that could cross continents beneath the earth. Once, kings had begged him to keep his armies sleeping. Then the sky had opened, the world had burned, and the old kingdom had vanished beneath ash.
A tremor passed through the chamber.
runes on the throne brightened, one after another, as though the chamber itself had been waiting for this moment.
A voice reached him through the ground—not a voice made of words, but the tiny vibrations of stone and mineral.
The surface was wounded. The old seals had weakened. Something had begun to dig.
Vorakh opened his eyes.
They were not eyes at all, but two narrow furnaces burning inside the darkness of his face.
He rose from the throne. The sound of his armor moving was like mountains grinding together. Around him, hundreds of sealed alcoves lined the chamber. Inside each one, a Gravemorph lay motionless, folded into a shell of black stone.
Vorakh placed one hand on the floor.
“Awaken,” he said.
The word traveled through the chamber as a pulse.
Across the buried city, mineral shells cracked. Long limbs unfolded. Gravewalkers lifted their narrow heads. Bonebreakers stirred beneath slabs thick as fortress doors. In the deepest vault, something colossal shifted, and the ceiling shed a rain of stones.
Vorakh looked toward a distant stairway leading up to the dead world.
He remembered the last time he had seen the sun. He remembered a promise made by people who believed themselves immortal. And he remembered the warning that had been carved into his throne before the world ended.
When the ash king wakes, the buried truth will wake with him.
Vorakh stepped from the dais.
“Let the surface learn,” he told his returning legion, “that the dead world was never empty.”
Then the Gravemorph Legion began its ascent.
