Chapter 1
I had imagined this moment a thousand times.
Sometimes, I imagined running towards him the second I saw him. Other times, I thought I would probably freeze, forget every word I had ever learned, and stand there staring at him like an idiot.
But never, not even in my wildest dreams, had I imagined how nervous I would actually feel.
I stood near the arrivals gate, holding a small white board against my chest. His flight had landed a little while ago, and people were already coming through the doors. Families reunited with their loved ones, children ran towards their parents, and people greeted each other with smiles and tired laughter.
And there I was.
Waiting for a boy I had known for so long without ever truly knowing what it felt like to stand beside him.
My online friend.
My favourite person to talk to.
The boy whose messages had become a familiar part of my days, whose words had comforted me when life felt a little too heavy, and whose presence had somehow become important to me even though an entire world separated us.
We had talked for months. We had shared conversations, jokes, little pieces of our lives, and moments that probably seemed ordinary to everyone else.
Yet, somehow, those ordinary moments had become precious to me.
And now, he was here.
In the same place as me.
Not behind a screen. Not on the other side of a notification. Not just a name appearing on my phone.
Here.
I looked down at the board in my hands.
I had written his name and two simple words on it.
-His name- MY LOVE.
A tiny heart sat beneath them.
I smiled at my own handwriting before immediately becoming embarrassed by it, even though nobody had any idea who I was waiting for.
What if he laughed?
What if I looked completely different from what he had imagined?
What if we were awkward? What if we ran out of things to say? What if all those beautiful conversations felt impossible to recreate in person?
I shook my head.
No. I wasn’t going to ruin this moment by worrying about a hundred things that hadn’t even happened.
I was finally going to meet him.
That was enough.
I glanced towards the arrivals gate again, shifting nervously from one foot to the other. I was so focused on the people walking through that I didn’t notice someone approaching from behind me.
I didn’t notice the tall boy who had just stepped out of the crowd, his suitcase rolling beside him.
I didn’t notice his brown hair, slightly messy after the long journey, or the way his eyes moved across the waiting people until they settled on the little white board in my hands.
He stopped.
He read the words.
Then he looked at the girl holding them.
And a smile slowly appeared on his face.
I was still staring at the arrivals gate when a familiar British voice spoke from behind me.
“Excuse me. Is that sign taken?”
I turned around.
And for one ridiculous second, my entire world went silent.
He was standing right there.
Tall. Brown-haired. With warm eyes, an attractive face, and skin that held a lovely balance between tan and pale. He looked a little tired from travelling, but his smile made him seem brighter than all the lights above us.
I had read his words through texts countless times.
But none of that had prepared me for seeing him standing in front of me.
Actually standing there.
Looking at me.
Smiling at me.
“Jesse?” I whispered.
His smile widened.
“Hey, you.”
That was it.
Two little words.
And somehow, they were enough to break through every nervous thought I had been holding inside me.
I dropped the board, took two quick steps towards him, and threw my arms around him.
He barely had time to react before I was hugging him tightly.
“Oh my God,” I whispered, my voice already shaking. “You’re actually here.”
For a moment, I felt him go still in surprise.
Then his arms wrapped around me.
Tightly.
One hand settled gently against my upper back while the other held me close, and suddenly I was no longer standing in the middle of a busy airport feeling like I might cry from nervousness.
I was in his arms.
The boy who had once existed only through messages and phone screens was hugging me as though he had been waiting for this moment too.
I buried my face against his shoulder, laughing softly because I couldn’t quite believe what was happening. My eyes stung, and I knew I was going to cry if I tried to speak too much.
He held me a little closer.
“Hey,” he murmured, his voice softer now. “I’m here.”
Those words did something to me.
I had spent so long wishing that one day we wouldn’t have to say goodbye through a screen. That one day, I could hear his laugh in real life or see his smile without a photograph separating us.
And now, I could hear his voice right beside my ear.
I could feel his arms around me.
He was real.
And so was this moment.
“I missed you,” I whispered.
“I missed you too.”
I pulled back just enough to look at him, keeping my hands around him because I wasn’t quite ready to let go.
He looked down at me with an amused smile.
“You know, I was going to make a dramatic entrance.”
I blinked at him.
“You call sneaking up behind me a dramatic entrance?”
“Absolutely.”
I laughed, wiping quickly beneath my eyes.
“You’re ridiculous.”
“And you’ve got a sign with MY LOVE written on it.”
My entire face grew warm.
“Oh, shut up!”
He laughed, and there it was.
His real laugh.
I covered my face with one hand, suddenly wishing the airport floor would open up and swallow me.
But he gently caught my attention again.
“Hey. Look at me.”
I lowered my hand.
His expression had softened.
“I’m really glad you’re here.”
I stared at him for a moment, trying to find an answer that could possibly express how much those words meant to me.
I couldn’t.
So I hugged him again.
This time, he laughed quietly and hugged me back without a hint of hesitation.
And I decided that perhaps some moments were too precious to be explained.
Perhaps they were meant to be felt.
After a while, we finally separated, although neither of us moved very far away. He picked up his suitcase while I retrieved my board, and he glanced at it once more.
“Can I keep this?”
“The board?”
“Obviously. What else would I mean?”
I smiled and narrowed my eyes at him.
“You’re making fun of me.”
“Would I do that?”
“Yes.”
He grinned.
“Fair point.”
I laughed again, and this time, the nervousness began to fade. We started walking towards the exit together, our shoulders occasionally brushing as we moved through the crowd.
Outside, the afternoon sun spilled across the pavement, and a gentle breeze stirred the loose strands of my hair.
He looked around at the unfamiliar surroundings before turning towards me.
“So,” he said, smiling, “what happens now?”
I looked at him.
At the boy I had waited for.
At the friend who had crossed so many miles to stand beside me.
At the person whose name had appeared on my screen so many times that seeing him in real life still felt like a dream I was afraid to wake up from.
I smiled back.
“Now,” I said, “you get to see what I’m really like.”
He raised an eyebrow.
“Should I be worried?”
“Very.”
He laughed and shook his head.
Then, as we continued walking, he gently nudged my shoulder with his.
And for the first time, our next conversation didn’t need a screen.
Our next memory didn’t need to be imagined.
He was beside me.
I was beside him.
And somewhere between the airport doors and the bright afternoon sunlight, a friendship that had lived for so long in the digital world finally found its place in the real one.
I glanced at him again, smiling to myself.
I had imagined this moment a thousand times.
But the truth was, none of my dreams had ever come close.
Because in every dream, I had imagined meeting him.
I had never imagined how it would feel to finally have him here.
And if this was only the beginning, I couldn’t wait to discover what came next.
