What They Couldn't Take
I gave my trust the way you hand someone a key,
believing their hands were safe.
They smiled when they lied to me.
They stayed while it was easy,
while I was useful,
while my kindness could be spent
like it would never run out.
I won't pretend it didn't hurt.
It did.
Betrayal has a voice,
and for a while it sounded like my name
in mouths I thought were friends.

But here's what they never understood:
I was never theirs to use up.
The truth in me was never on loan.
God saw what I couldn't see,
and He taught me the difference
between a loving heart
and a blind one.
So I'm standing back up —
softer, not weaker.
My heart still knows how to give,
but now it knows how to choose.
What they took, let them keep it.
What I am —
no lie could ever carry that away.
