Chapter 1
Episode 1: A Stranger in My PhoneTwo years of promises. Two different worlds. One love that neither of them knew how to save.
The first time Amina asked Musa when they would finally meet, he told her to be patient.
“Soon, Amina. I just need to sort out a few things first.”
She wanted to believe him.
After all, he was the man who had made her smile at her phone in the middle of the night, the man whose voice had become familiar enough to comfort her even when they were thousands of miles apart.
But how long was soon supposed to last?
A week?
A month?
Another year?
She didn’t know it then, but that little word would become one of the most painful words in their relationship.
Because sometimes, the hardest part of loving someone isn’t the distance between you.
It’s waiting for the person you love to turn their promises into reality.
And Amina had no idea how long she would have to wait.
Two Strangers, Two Different WorldsBefore the questions, before the delays, before their families became part of a love story that had once belonged only to them, there was a message.
Amina was seventeen when she met Musa online.
She lived in The Gambia, a young woman with dreams of her own and a heart that believed love should feel safe. She was thoughtful, curious, and sometimes stubborn. She could laugh at the smallest things, but she also had a habit of thinking deeply about words other people forgot moments after saying them.
She wasn’t looking for a perfect man.
She wanted someone who would love her sincerely, listen when she spoke, and make her feel that she mattered.
Someone who would choose her not only when things were easy, but also when loving her required effort.
Thousands of miles away, in the United States, lived a man who had almost stopped believing that he would ever find the love he wanted.
Musa was thirty-five.
For years, he had struggled with relationships. He didn’t know how to approach women confidently, and he often wondered whether his age and appearance made him less desirable. Watching other people find partners and build families sometimes left him with a quiet fear that he might grow old alone.
He rarely spoke about that fear, but it followed him.
What if no woman ever truly chose him?
What if someone came into his life only to take advantage of him?
What if he finally found love, only to discover that he wasn’t enough?
Eventually, Musa decided to search for love online.
Perhaps a conversation would be easier than a face-to-face introduction. Perhaps, somewhere beyond the people he had already met, there was someone who would see him differently.
He didn’t know who he was looking for.
Then he came across Amina.
She was beautiful, but her appearance wasn’t the only thing that caught his attention. She had opinions, asked questions, and wasn’t afraid to express herself. She had a mind of her own, and she didn’t seem interested in pretending to be someone she wasn’t.
They introduced themselves.
They exchanged numbers.
And just like that, two people living in different countries began talking.
Neither knew how much those first conversations would eventually mean.
The Girl Behind the ScreenAt first, their conversations were ordinary.
They asked about each other’s lives, exchanged stories, and discovered little things that made them laugh. Sometimes, a conversation that was supposed to last a few minutes stretched much longer than either had planned.
Amina began recognizing Musa’s name whenever it appeared on her phone.
She looked forward to his messages.
She grew familiar with his voice, his way of speaking, and the little habits that made him different from everyone else she knew.
Soon, they had jokes that belonged only to them. They talked late into the night, shared their thoughts, and slowly began revealing parts of themselves they didn’t show everyone.
The distance became easier to forget when they were talking.
Musa started looking forward to her messages, too.
Amina’s attention meant more to him than he knew how to explain. For a man who had spent years questioning whether he could be loved, having someone genuinely interested in his thoughts felt like discovering something he had almost given up searching for.
He began to hope that perhaps his fears were wrong.
Perhaps he could be loved for who he was.
Perhaps Amina was different.
And Amina, in her own way, began to believe that Musa could be the man she had been waiting for.
She didn’t fall in love in a single moment.
It happened gradually.
It happened through the conversations she didn’t want to end, the laughter that made the miles feel smaller, and the feeling that someone far away was becoming an important part of her everyday life.
Before long, their conversations were no longer just conversations.
They were building something.
At least, that was what Amina believed.
Promises Across the OceanTheir relationship grew, and so did their dreams.
They talked about the future. They imagined what it would be like to meet, to sit beside each other, and to experience all the ordinary things that couples who lived near each other could take for granted.
Amina imagined the day she would finally see Musa in person.
No phone screen.
No waiting for a call.
No wondering whether he was too busy or too tired to talk.
Just the two of them, finally in the same place.
She imagined marriage, too.
Not a perfect marriage, because she knew real life was never that simple. She wanted a home where she could speak freely, where her feelings mattered, and where love came with respect, patience, and understanding.
She understood that marriage involved families. She was Muslim, and she wanted their relationship to move toward a proper commitment rather than continue indefinitely in private.
To Amina, involving their families would mean that their love was becoming real in a way promises alone could never achieve.
Musa spoke about their future as well.
His words gave her hope. Whenever uncertainty crept into her thoughts, she remembered what they had discussed and reminded herself that they were working toward the same goal.
But Musa carried fears he didn’t always know how to communicate.
He worried about being taken advantage of. He sometimes questioned whether Amina’s feelings would remain the same once she knew him more deeply. Beneath his desire to find love was a fear of losing it before he could feel secure in it.
And sometimes, two people can love each other while carrying fears that make loving each other harder.
Neither understood that yet.
They were too busy imagining the future to ask themselves what would happen when their dreams met reality.
Two Years LaterBy the time their relationship approached its second year, Amina had grown tired of imagining their first meeting.
She wanted it to happen.
She wanted to know that the man who had become such a significant part of her life was someone she could finally sit beside, speak to face-to-face, and build a future with beyond a phone screen.
One evening, she gathered the courage to ask him again.
“Musa, when are we going to meet?”
He was quiet for a moment.
“Soon, Amina.”
She looked at the words on her screen, feeling the familiar mixture of hope and disappointment.
“You always say soon.”
“I know, but I need to sort out a few things first.”
“What things?”
“Things I need to take care of. Just be patient with me.”
Amina wanted to understand. She didn’t want him to feel that she was attacking him every time she asked about their future.
But she couldn’t ignore the questions growing inside her.
“Do you understand how long we’ve been talking?” she asked. “We’ve been doing this for almost two years, Musa. I love you, but I don’t want us to keep talking forever without knowing when we’ll actually meet.”
“I’m trying, Amina.”
“And I’m trying to be patient. But what are we waiting for?”
He didn’t have an answer that satisfied her.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Amina felt guilty for pushing the conversation, even though she knew her questions were important. She didn’t want to lose him. She didn’t want him to think that she didn’t appreciate what they had.
She simply wanted to know that she wasn’t the only one waiting for their future to begin.
Then another thought came to her.
“Musa, we need to involve our families.”
He paused.
“I mean it,” she continued. “I’m Muslim. I don’t want us to keep doing this indefinitely without taking the proper steps toward marriage. Our families need to know about us.”
This time, the silence felt different.
For two years, their love had existed in messages, phone calls, promises, and private dreams. Now Amina was asking Musa to take that love beyond their private world and into the lives of the people who would become part of their future.
It was no longer enough to tell her that he loved her.
She needed to know what they were going to do about it.
Musa understood that she had a point.
If he truly intended to marry Amina, he couldn’t keep asking her to wait without taking steps toward making their relationship official.
So he agreed to involve his family.
When Amina heard that, relief washed over her.
Finally, she thought.
Finally, they were moving forward.
She imagined that the next stage might bring challenges, but she believed those challenges could be faced together. Families would talk. Plans would be made. The future they had discussed for so long might finally begin to take shape.
She didn’t expect everything to happen immediately.
She only needed them to start.
The Beginning of the WaitWhen Musa began involving his family, Amina expected progress.
Instead, delays began to appear.
At first, she told herself not to worry. Family matters could take time, and she didn’t want to assume that every delay meant something was wrong.
Musa reassured her that things would work out.
So she waited.
She had waited to meet him.
She had waited for their private relationship to become an official commitment.
Now she was waiting for the families to help them take the next step.
And although she still loved Musa, a small part of her began to wonder whether the future she had imagined so clearly was as close as he had always made it sound.
She pushed the thought away.
After all, they had come so far.
Two years of conversations. Two years of promises. Two years of imagining a life together.
Surely, they wouldn’t lose everything now.
Amina held on to that hope because she wasn’t ready to consider the alternative.
She didn’t know what the coming months would bring. She didn’t know how much their families’ expectations would shape the decisions ahead of them, or how difficult it would become to reconcile the traditions they had grown up with and the future they wanted to build.
All she knew was that she loved Musa.
And she believed that love, if it was sincere, would find a way.
She was about to discover that sometimes, two people can want the same future and still have no idea how to reach it.
Because the distance between The Gambia and America was measured in miles.
The distance that would threaten their love was something neither of them had learned how to measure.
