Chapter 1:The Weight of Expectations
The heavy iron gates of St. Jude Academy always felt less like an entrance to an institution and more like the perimeter wall of a fortress. For Maya, every step onto the polished marble courtyard was a silent reminder of the invisible walls that separated her world from everyone else's.
She clutched her worn-out leather notebook tightly against her chest, her fingers tracing the frayed edges. As a scholarship student surviving on grit, late-night study sessions, and quiet determination, Maya didn’t have the luxury of distractions. Her entire future—and the sacrifices her mother had poured into her education—hung by a thread. All she needed to do was keep her head down, ace her final exams, and graduate without drawing attention to herself.
Fate, however, clearly had a very different script in mind.
"Watch out!"
Before Maya could react, a sudden rush of wind brushed past her shoulder, followed by the heavy thud of scattered books hitting the pavement. Papers flew everywhere, fluttering across the courtyard like startled white doves.
Maya froze, blinking as she looked down at the mess at her feet. She knelt quickly, her small hands gathering the loose sheets.
"I am so sorry. I wasn't looking where I was going," a deep, smooth voice murmured above her.
Maya paused, her fingers freezing over a chemistry notes page. She looked up, and her breath caught.
Standing right in front of her was Jordan Vance.
In a school where everyone wore the exact same charcoal-gray uniform, Jordan somehow managed to look like he belonged in a completely different universe. He was tall, with sharp features, unruly dark curls falling slightly over his forehead, and eyes that held a heavy, restless storm. He was the kind of guy people whispered about—wealthy, untouchable, and seemingly burdened by a life everyone envied yet no one truly understood.
Yet, right now, as he crouched down across from her to grab a stray paper, his usual arrogant guard seemed entirely dropped.
When their fingers brushed against a math workbook, an unexpected jolt—sharp and electric—shot straight through Maya's skin. She pulled her hand back as if she’d been burned, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs.
Jordan stopped, his gaze locking onto hers. For a long, breathless second, the chaotic noise of the school bell, the laughing students, and the distant traffic all faded away into complete silence.
"Are you... alright?" Jordan asked softly, his voice lower this time, carrying a curious intensity that made Maya's chest tighten.
Maya swallowed hard, forcing her composure back into place. She handed the remaining papers to him, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'm fine. Just... watch where you're going next time, Vance."
Instead of walking away with the cold indifference he usually showed everyone, a faint, lopsided smile touched the corner of Jordan's lips. He stood up, holding his books, but his eyes lingered on her face like he was trying to solve a puzzle he couldn't quite figure out.
"Maybe I will," Jordan replied quietly, turning on his heel and walking toward the main building.
Maya stood frozen on the pavement, her pulse racing wildly. She didn't know it yet, but that single accidental collision had just shattered the invisible walls she had built around her heart—and her life would never be the same again.
