Summary

Some secrets are buried for a reason. Others are waiting to be awakened. Fright Wood has always been a town of whispers, forgotten histories, and secrets buried deep beneath its soil. But for Kyle Johnson, those whispers have never been silent. Born with an extraordinary gift of sight, Kyle has spent her life haunted by visions of the past, voices of the dead, and memories that do not belong to her. When her abilities become impossible to ignore, she returns to the mysterious town her family once called home, hoping to uncover the truth behind her grandmother’s warnings. But everything changes when Kyle discovers an ancient journal belonging to Emby Stevens, a young girl whose visions reveal a terrifying connection between the living, the dead, and a darkness that has been waiting centuries to awaken. As buried family secrets unravel, Kyle discovers a forgotten bloodline, powerful witches, a dangerous cult trapped between worlds, and an ancient entity sleeping beneath Fright Wood. The deeper she searches, the more she realizes that her return was never a coincidence. The cemetery holds the answers. The dead are beginning to stir. And something beneath the soil remembers every secret the town tried to bury. Three souls. Three gifts. One bloodline. The fate of Fright Wood rests in their hands. Because in Fright Wood, the past never truly dies. It waits.

How It All Began

The Johnson family had always belonged to Fright Wood. Not in the way people belong to a town, but in the way a shadow belongs to whatever casts it.

Kyle Johnson was born under a Full Blood moon in a house that creaked like it was alive. Kyle’s mother had said she always had eyes that looked as though she could see the unknown and that her gazes would look as though she was searching for something, not searching for light, but for something else entirely.

Her grandmother, Mia Johnson, had been a quiet woman herself. She also had a keen and unusual sight, but was also known to read cards for anyone who wanted a glimpse into their past, present, and or futures.

When Kyle was seven, Mia told her that some people hear God in thunder and rain, but the Johnsons heard something deeper.

Something buried.

“Never visit the graves,” Mia warned.

“They whisper back.”

After her grandmother’s death, the whispers began in earnest and her sight started to unfold. It’s as though Mia passed over all her extramundane abilities over to Kyle at death.

At first, the voices were faint, like wind caught in a bottle. Her visions began to come through her dreams when she was fast asleep and awake.

In the beginning her visions and the voices were just hodgepodge. Until they started to make sense and she could make out dates, faces, she could feel the presence of the unseen, and make out full stories from past events that were being shown to her.

When Kyle mentioned this to her parents, her mother only said.

“You have your grandmother’s gift of sight. But don’t use it. Not here. It’s not safe.”

My Second Chance

kitkatbar29: So this first book in this series I liked. A good plot that flowed well for the most part with some twists along the way, good well developed characters... there are a few technical mistakes, but nothing to harsh. I must say toward the end of the book there were some issues with like a quick change ...

Ashley: I enjoyed the story. It was a short one so the fast pace fit. I think something should be put in to show a time jump between paragraphs like a "****" just to make it easier to follow when we skip to the next day week or month. Over all a good read.
