Prologue

Long time ago…

“Get out! Leave!”

“What?!”

“Thick-face!”

“W-wait! Vicenta! Listen to me first! Let’s talk like a civilized human being! Keep calm!”

“Calm? Talk? Talk to my first!”

A right hook was served.

“OUCH! WHY?!”

Ish watched mortified as his adopted parents argue. He saw his mother punch his father. It was a good hit.

In relationship arguments can’t be avoided however this is the first time Ish witnesses his parents got into a very serious fight. The first time he learned that Ekong, his adopted father, is a cheater.

For everyone’s own good Ish hides the allegedly deadly weapon inside the household. He has an extreme care for his adopted parents, all thanks to them he is alive.

“You pig!”

“Pig? How could you, Vicenta?!”

Vicenta grabbed a caldron, swung it to her husband’s head. Ekong fortunately dodge it.

Ish mouth went slightly agape, he was certain he hide all deadly weapons but still the caldron escape?

Ekong stumbled backwards almost lost his footing. “Hey! Darling! Please! Put down the caldron.”

Ish looked at his parents, how can this happened? These two was known love birds of their settlement but now? They turned into an aggressive birds design for a cockfight.

“I cannot stomach you anymore! Thick-face! Unfaithful! Liar!”

“I am so sorry! Vicenta! I admit my mistake!”

“Sorry? Sorry can’t fix what is already broken! Now? Your roosters will pay!”

“Oh, no! Don’t you dare drag my rooster into this mayhem! Leave them alone, Vicenta!”

Before Ish could intervene someone already beat him for it. A beautiful blonde woman step in with her pleading voice she said. “Please, Vicenta, breathe! Don’t hurt the innocent roosters. Put the caldron down.”

People peek behind the wooden fences irk their brows. “Who’s that woman?”

“That’s Elizabeth Grimony. A healer from Riverside. She is the bitch of Ekong!” Daday, Vicenta's cousin, answered.

Ish saw his mother unpleased face, she scream and hit Elizabeth with the caldron. Elizabeth was taken aback then second swing the caldron was stopped by a yellow barrier.

Vicenta’s eyes widen and her nose flared due to extreme frustration. “Turn off this shield! You’re so brave to seduce my husband?!”

Vicenta hit the solar shied many times but it only causes ripples on the barrier, something similar to a still water when a pebble drops.

Ekong move to stop his angry wife but it only give his wife the upper hand to hit him again. Because of that Elizabeth was surprised and it made the barrier unsteady causing the caldron to bypass it. When Vicenta noticed the fading yellow light she quickly swung the caldron it hit the solar healer’s head.

“Ouch! Stop! Stop it!” Elizabeth yelped, she tried blocking the attack with her arms but Vicenta was persistent and angry. This leave no other option for Elizabeth but to fight back! She grabbed Vicenta’s hair and pulled it hard.

Vicenta’s eyes go wide in instant. “Let me go!” She demanded and pulled Elizabeth’s hair too.

“After you!”

“Never!”

“Do you want to get bald?”

“Bitch! Let me go first and I will let you go!”

Tears formed in Ish’s eyes, he is only seven years old. This is too much to digest. “Mom! Please! Stop it!” He pleaded but he was never heard nor seen.

The fight rolled to the yard, almost everyone who walked by witnesses it. Ish knew some neighbors are secretly betting who will win. When Ish thought this has no end a sudden fast shimmer of light hit Vicenta throwing her body towards the coconut tree. Everyone gasped and turned to where the light came—a little girl with blonde hair and blue eyes. Dy Grimony, the daughter of Elizabeth.

“Leave my mama alone! You pig!” Dy screamed, pouty lip and teary eyes. Her small fist shimmer ready to throw another light against the woman who hurt her mother.

Ish’s eyes widen. “Mama!” He cried and run toward Vicenta. “Mama! Are you okay? You got hurt! Can you stand?” He helped his mother using every strength his seven year old body could.

Elizabeth gasped after realizing what just happened. She looked at Vicenta then to her own seven year old kid. “Dy?! What have you done?!” She made a quick stride toward little Dy and spank Dy’s bottom. “What did we talked before? Do notbuse exskill to harm people!”

Little Dy wailed. She wipe her runny nose with the back of her sleeve. “Why angry? I only helped you! The bad lady hurting mama!”

Elizabeth felt a stung in her heart. “Oh, Dy…” Before she could embrace Dy, her daughter run back to the Riverside’s route. “Dy! Come back! Hey! Wait for me!”

“Elizabeth, just leave already.” Jenny suggested. She is the niece of Vicenta.

“Right! Don’t come back!” Warned Daday. “We don’t need your filth in Roots!”

“I’m sorry.” Elizabeth muttered and run back to the Riverside’s route leaving the Root’s people in the scene.

Ish inhales deeply, he tried to calm the rapid beating of his heart but he flinched when he felt his finger burns . He looked down… “My fingers? Flames?”

lblomme: I always love a story where good overcomes evil. The sad start, the growth, and ultimate strength of the main character was well done. The story never lagged and ultimately delivered a happy ending even for characters who were less than stellar. Well done!

Ashley: I enjoyed the story. It was a short one so the fast pace fit. I think something should be put in to show a time jump between paragraphs like a "****" just to make it easier to follow when we skip to the next day week or month. Over all a good read.
