Preface: Twenty-Four Months Ago
The fire in the stone hearth of Blackwood Manor crackled with dry birch, sending embers drifting up into the dark flue.
Julian adjusted the cuffs of his bespoke midnight-blue suit jacket—a gift from three months prior. He was thirty-six, a former cross-country runner with broad shoulders and the kind of bright, easy smile that usually made older clients in the city hand over their portfolios without asking twice.
Tonight, his smile was gone. His knuckles were pale where his hands gripped the edge of the mahogany table.
“Evie, be reasonable,” Julian said, trying to keep the irritation out of his voice, trying to sound like a man who still had a say. “I have a board meeting in Manhattan at nine tomorrow morning. Marcus won’t open the main gate, and my Mercedes key isn’t in the tray where I left it.”
Across from him, Evie Cross dabbed the corner of her ruby lips with a linen napkin. Her hair was swept up in elaborate, honey-blonde waves, catching the chandelier’s amber glow.
“Oh, Julian,” she sighed softly, her voice thick and breathy, like warm caramel poured over crushed ice. She tilted her head, her round eyes blinking with an expression of tender, almost sorrowful pity. “The city. Always the city. Meetings, spreadsheets, little men in cheap gray suits telling you what your time is worth. Why do you insist on running back to that dreadful treadmill, baby?”
“It’s my career, Evie,” Julian replied, his voice rising, scraping against the quiet grandeur of the dining room. “I told you when we started seeing each other that I wasn’t just going to disappear into the woods. I appreciate the dinners, the clothes, the weekends—all of it. But I’m leaving tonight.”
Evie didn’t blink. She reached out with her manicured fingers and lightly pushed a small, velvet-lined silver box across the table.
Julian looked down. Inside lay an antique platinum Patek Philippe watch, its second hand sweeping with silent, immaculate precision.
“It belonged to a gentleman who appreciated stillness,” Evie whispered, her breathy giggle fluttering into the quiet air. “Look at it, sweetheart. It doesn’t rush. It doesn’t panic. Put it on. Let Marcus unpack your overnight bag.”
Julian didn’t touch the box. He pushed his chair back, the heavy carved oak legs grating against the dark walnut floorboards. “I’m calling an Uber to the lower gate, and I’m walking the road if I have to.”
He reached into his breast pocket for his iPhone. His thumb hit the power button.
The screen stayed jet black.
He tapped it again, harder. Nothing.
“Dead battery?” Evie asked, her pout returning with gentle theatrical sympathy. “Marcus uses such clever little radio frequency disruptors along the perimeter. It’s for privacy, darling. The paparazzi... oh, they’re like vultures when they smell a woman of means.”
Julian’s face tightened. A sliver of cold realization slipped through his frustration, turning into something raw and sharp. “What did you do with my car keys, Evie?”
Evie set her crystal wine glass down.
The glass chimed against the silver coaster, crisp and absolute.
The sweet, fluttering softness drained from her face in an instant. Her shoulders locked. Her chin lifted, and when her eyes met his, they were as dark and still as frozen pond water. The breathy, eccentric drawl vanished entirely, replaced by a low, measured tone that sounded like a judge handing down a sentence.
“Your company accepted your resignation letter this morning, Julian,” Evie said calmly. “Your apartment in Tribeca was surrendered by courier at noon. Your lease deposit was forfeited. As far as the state of New York is concerned, you have taken an indefinite sabbatical to work in private wealth management abroad.”
Julian went rigid. His breath hitched in his throat. “You’re lying.”
“Marcus,” Evie said, not raising her voice.
From the dark corner of the dining room archway, Marcus stepped forward. He didn’t have a jacket on tonight; his forearms were bare, revealing corded muscle and a faded military crest tattooed near the wrist. In his left hand, he held Julian’s key fob. In his right, a matte-black tactical taser.
“Sit down, Julian,” Evie instructed quietly. “Eat your quail. You’ll need the protein for the morning.”
“The morning?” Julian choked out, backing away until his thighs hit the sideboard, his fingers blindly knocking over a cut-crystal decanter. “What happens in the morning?!”
Evie looked down at the empty chair beside her, then back up at him with a slow, chilling smile.
“Tomorrow,” she purred softly, the honeyed, breathy cadence creeping back into her voice like a slow fog, “we start your physical rehabilitation. You have so much tension to sweat out of those pretty shoulders, baby. And we have so many years ahead of us.”
Julian lunged toward the tall French doors leading out to the terrace.
He didn’t make it three steps before the blue arc of electricity lit the dark dining room.

Oh my goodness 😶🌫️
Wow color me amazed
First of all, the vibes were immaculate. It’s giving classic Gothic thriller meets pure, unhinged camp, and honestly? Mamma mia, I’m here for it!
The standout star here was 1000% Evie Cross. Ever since I saw that cover with Marky Mark and Paulette from Legally Blonde, I haven’t been able to get the image out of my head! Lo and behold, the moment she opened her mouth, the breathy, caramel-smooth voice, the dramatics, the whole "Oh, Julian, baby..." energy, it was so iconically Jennifer Coolidge! I could literally hear her drawling every single line, looking all glamorous in her honey-blonde waves while casually ruining this man’s whole existence. She is the ultimate cougar villain, and I am dead over how hilariously terrifying she is. One second she’s pouting about "paparazzi like vultures," and the next, she's stone-cold giving a "your apartment lease was surrendered at noon" speech. Absolute queen behavior, even if she's totally nuts!
Poor Julian thought he was just securing a rich sugar mama, but babe... you just signed up for a lifetime subscription to Blackwood Manor’s hostage program! That shift from cozy, high-class romance to straight-up horror when the taser clicked? Chills.
The prologue sets up the mystery so well. Knowing Terrex is about to walk into this exact same trap twenty-four months later makes the stakes crazy high. The pacing was crisp, the atmosphere was super rich, and Evie’s "Stifler's Mom but make her a psychotic mastermind" energy? I cannot!
And before anyone judges me for that comparison, YES, I have watched American Pie, thank you very much! Don't come for me!🤣✋
Honestly, this was such a fun, twisted read. Evie Cross, you terrifying little menace. I am both horrified and thoroughly entertained!🍿
Mia Vita!
