Chapter 1 : The Weight Of The Rain
The black umbrella felt heavy in Shane’s hand, but not nearly as heavy as the silence stretching across the cemetery. They had already lowered his mother into the earth. At twenty-eight, Shane was old enough to know the world was indifferent to tragedy, yet the people pressing close—distant relatives and neighbors with practiced expressions of pity—offered hollow phrases that felt like sandpaper against an open wound.
“She’s in a better place, Shane.”
“You have to be strong now. You're the man of the house.”
Every word fed a low, rhythmic thrumming in his chest. It wasn’t sadness; it was a volatile, claustrophobic rage. His mother had been his anchor, the only person who understood the quiet, hyper-calculating way his mind worked. Shane didn't process emotion like normal people. Where others felt grief, his mind saw a broken mechanism—a problem with no structural solution. Now, looking at the fresh mound of wet dirt, the world felt entirely unmoored.
When he returned to the empty house, the silence was deafening. He walked past the kitchen, straight into his basement workshop. This was his sanctuary, a space lined with lathes, blueprints, circuit boards, and custom-milled metal components. He stared at his workbench, his eyes landing on a rugged tactical watch he had spent the last three months tearing apart and modifying with a custom-built, high-torque micro-motor and a spool of high-tensile steel cable. It was a masterpiece of compact engineering, built purely because his restless mind demanded a challenge.
Suddenly, the walls of the house felt like they were collapsing inward. The anger that had been simmering all day finally boiled over. He didn't scream. He didn't break anything.
Instead, he strapped the modified winch watch to his wrist. He grabbed his hunting knife, a rugged tactical pack, and a spool of high-strength paracord. He didn't pack extra clothes. He didn't leave a note. Stepping out the back door, Shane sprinted straight into the jagged, unforgiving tree line of Blackwood State Forest just as the sky finally broke open, letting loose a torrential downpour. He wanted to get lost. He wanted the forest to swallow him whole.
