Taking the fall.
ELLIE'S POV.
Call me a witch, but I was the happiest person on earth when Killian called to tell me that he'd just broken up with his girlfriend.
They'd been together for two years, and those two years had been the most soul crushing years of my life.
Killian was obsessed with her, and having to watch the man I loved with everything in me wrap his arms around another girl was torture. To him, I was a reliable childhood friend, but to me, he was my first love, the man I would absolutely give anything for.
A smile stretched across my lips as I put the finishing touches on my light makeup. It was almost 8pm and my makeup would practically go unnoticed but I had to look my best if I was going to confess my feelings to Killian.
Tonight was the night. Since he was so blind that he couldn't see how much I loved him through my hundreds of obvious gestures through ten whole years, I was going to outrightly tell him how I felt about him.
Grabbing my fake, white Chanel purse off the bed and running my fingers through my golden locs, I made my way downstairs only to meet the unruly sight of my mother making out with the random druggie she had brought home that evening.
Sighing, I swallowed the lump in my throat and made my way to the door.
“Sweetheart!” Her faint voice stopped me in my tracks, and I turned to face the woman who used to be my rock.
She was now a shadow of the bubbly woman I once knew, all because she couldn't stand my father's sudden death.
“Yes mom.”
“What about dinner?” She asked, still smouldering the man with kisses while his hands roamed her body. Disgust settled in my stomach, and I tried very hard to ignore it.
“I made pasta.”
That was all she cared about these days— food and sex with any rando that cared to look her way. It was exhausting having to carry the financial weight of the family alone since her regression, but she risked her life for me countless times, she deserved my support.
“Okay good. Have fun and be careful out there.” She waved and returned her full attention to the man grunting underneath her. I shrugged and hurried out of the house before the pasta I ate would end up on the floor.
I was used to this life, working overtime to carter to her needs and mine, but tonight, I tried not think about that. Tonight was about me and Killian, about showing him that I could be more than a friend. He had said over the phone that he needed a shoulder to lean on after the breakup, and I was running down to his place even though he didn't specify that he needed me.
Twenty minutes later, I was in front of the Callaghan estate, the biggest private estate in all of New York.
Killian's family owned conglomerates, controlled sports agencies. They were worth billions, and it was honestly a miracle that I even knew who Killian was. Not only did he stem from a wealthy as fuck family, he was New York City's golden boy, a beloved hockey player that had taken the city by storm. I was so proud of him, especially since I watched him build his career from the ground up.
The guards at the gate didn't deter me from stepping into the estate, and just by another stroke of luck, Killian's parents weren't home that night. I made my way in, easily navigating the huge buildings until I found Killian's room. He wasn't inside, but I could tell by the music coming from his private stereo that he was close by.
“Killian?” My voice echoed in the empty mansion as I ran down the stairs and headed towards the back where the large pool was located. It was his favorite spot.
“Killian.” I called, my voice firmer now. I thought I heard his voice as I approached the pool but when I inched closer, I realized that there was a second voice—female, and not in a way I liked.
“Oh.. Killian! Fuck me! Yes! Fuck that pussy!”
The lady, whoever she was, moaned like her life depended on it while Killian pinned her in place on the pool bench while ramming into her from behind.
Something cracked in my chest, a feeling that I was familiar to but refused to acknowledge. Heartbreak. He was never mine, but every time I saw him with another woman, I felt my heart shatter inside of me.
Even the blind could see how much I loved Killian, and I knew he knew, but he would never ask me out. I blinked back my tears at that point.
Was there something wrong with me? Did I not meet the standard of the women he found attractive? Why couldn't it have been me on that bench?
“Fuck this.” I sighed as their moans grew unbearable, making my thighs clench harder than I wanted. I turned to leave, but in my haste, knocked over a flower vase that had absolutely no business being in my way.
I froze, biting my lower lip, and their moaning stopped abruptly. I heard shuffling and mumbling, then footsteps that approached too fast, and Killian's earthy cologne quickly filled my nostrils.
“Ellie?” His smooth voice came, and I slowly faced him, my cheeks beet-red from embarrassment.
“Hey, I'm so sorry for interrupting.” I started immediately. “It's just… you said you were heartbroken and I thought I should console you but I guess you've moved on already.” I cleared my throat, peeking over his shoulder at the scrambling brunette.
“Oh that,” he scratched the back of his head. “That was just casual, to yunno, get my mind off things.”
I nodded. “I understand. I was just leaving.”
He grabbed my wrist before I could turn, and the heat of his touch sent thousands of sparks travelling through my body and scorching the bone under my skin. God, I couldn't help myself around this man.
He was a gorgeous six feet something man, with broad shoulders and abs to die for. His tousled hair framed his beautiful facial features, especially those full lips I would love to taste someday.
“I'll… I'll drop you off. I need to go for a drive anyway, I need the fresh air.” He flashed me an apologetic smile, and I was tempted to ask him why he couldn't see how much I loved him.
However, I was fully convinced that if I was there for him for just a little bit longer, he would see how much I cared for him and give me a chance. You would think ignoring the fact that he just fucked another girl was the worst thing I had endured to earn his love… you'd be surprised.
“I'll go on a drive with you, I don't mind.” I gave in, pushing my anger and jealousy aside.
“Great. Let change quickly.” He returned into the house without as much as another glance at the brunette who he was buried inside minutes ago. She awkwardly skidded past me, and I rolled my eyes, digging through my purse for my phone.
I went to my email, but the message I was waiting for hadn't arrived, so I tucked it back into my purse and sighed. What was I expecting? A job on my first month after graduation? Yeah, right. I guess I was stuck waiting tables for now.
Killian came out fully dressed a few minutes later, and by fully dressed, I meant, in a tank tap of lounge shorts that hung too low for my liking. We got into his Aston Martin and rode off into the night, blasting rock music so loud that I was sure I was going to become partially deaf.
“This feels great!” He yelled, the wind crashing against his skin, against his hair, making this a perfect slow-mo moment. I smiled at him, admiring all the gorgeousness, and for some reason, this felt like the best time to tell him how I felt.
He took a sip of the alcohol bottle he had in the cup holder, and it bothered me that he was drinking and speeding. But I knew he wouldn't listen to me.
“Um.. Killian?” I called, raising my voice so he could hear me through the music.
“Yeah?”
“I wanted to tell you something, actually I've been keeping it for a while and..”
“Just say it, bunny.”
My cheeks flushed immediately he called me that, his little nickname for me. It might not be endearing considering that the nickname came because he thought my two front teeth looked like bunny teeth.
“Okay. Well, I.. I think I'm.. I'm in..”
The rest of the words turned into an ear piercing scream when the car slammed right into a woman who was crossing the street.
She tumbled over and lay flat on the road, my heart hammered loudly against my chest as I stared at the scene with widened eyes. It happened so fast I couldn't even believe it, and Killian's heavy breathing suddenly seemed louder than the music.
“Is she… is she alive?” I asked as he turned the radio off. Dead silence followed, and then the distant wail of police sirens came.
“Shit, shit, shit!” He explained, and I damn near pisses my pants.
Did we just kill a woman? Fuck!
My hands and feet went numb.
“Ellie, you need to switch seats with me now.”
His sudden statement made my already racing heart to go into a frenzy because what the hell did he mean!?
“What?”
“Quick! Before the police gets here. I need you to take the blame for this, Ellie.”
