Chapter 1:- Black Clothes and Blackmail 🖤🔫

Chapter 1: Black Clothes and Blackmail 🖤🔫

2 AM. A dead body. A secret killer… and a wife who was more interested in spying on her husband than trusting him.

It was exactly two in the morning.

The entire city was fast asleep, but Maya Oberoi was hanging off the boundary wall of a mansion that looked like a five-star hotel.

One foot was dangling in the air, while the other was stuck in a thorny bush.

"Oh, dear God! If I survive tonight, I swear I'll wake up at five every morning and do yoga! I'll even eat Mom's bitter gourd curry without complaining! And I'll never suspect my husband again!"

She paused for two seconds before adding,

"Actually, cancel that last promise. Let's not get carried away with the miracles."

She made one more attempt to climb over the wall.

And the very next second—

THUD!

Maya landed flat on the other side.

"AAAAH! MY BACK! God, I promised to do yoga, not gymnastics!"

She somehow managed to get back on her feet and dusted herself off.

She was dressed entirely in black—a black hoodie, black jeans, and a black mask covering her face.

She looked like a professional criminal.

Unfortunately, the pink designer handbag in her hand completely destroyed her criminal image.

She wasn't here to steal anything.

She was here to spy on her husband, Kabir Oberoi.

Kabir.

Her boring, silent, and apparently respectable software engineer husband.

The same man who left home every morning in a formal shirt, carrying his laptop bag, and returned every evening to ask just three questions—

"Have you eaten?"

"Should I make you some coffee?"

"Why did you change the Wi-Fi password?"

But over the past few days, Kabir's behavior had changed.

Secret phone calls at night. Strange meetings with unfamiliar people. And yesterday, she'd found a black box inside his wardrobe.

Only instead of a laptop, it contained an actual gun!

Ever since then, Maya's brain had been stuck in detective mode.

Either my husband is having an affair with some gangster girl… or the budget for a crime series on Netflix is coming straight out of my household!

Tonight, she was determined to uncover the truth.

Or at least, that was what she'd thought.

The moment Maya stepped inside the mansion, an unsettling silence surrounded her.

No guards shouting.

No footsteps.

Just the steady ticking of a clock on the wall.

She switched on her phone's flashlight and began moving forward cautiously.

"Come on, Maya. Be brave. You're a daughter-in-law of the Oberoi family. You're not afraid of anyone."

She paused and glanced into the darkness.

"Except lizards, cockroaches, dogs, and the ghosts that might come with them. I'm a little afraid of those."

THUD!

Her foot struck something.

Maya looked down.

And in the next instant, every trace of humor vanished from her face.

A man was lying on the floor.

The same man whose face she'd seen on the news earlier that day.

Minister Rajveer Sinha.

His eyes were open. Blood stained his white shirt, and a broken glass lay nearby.

Maya nearly dropped her phone.

"M-Murder…"

The word barely escaped her throat.

"Oh, dear God… I came here to catch my husband cheating, and I've accidentally stumbled into a full-blown CBI investigation!"

She began backing away.

Then—

CLICK.

A sound came from somewhere in the darkness.

Maya froze.

Someone suddenly clamped a hand over her mouth from behind and pinned her against the wall.

Her breath caught.

A deep voice whispered close to her ear.

"Make a single sound, and your entire life will change."

Fear filled Maya's eyes.

But there was something strangely familiar about that voice.

Slowly, she pulled her mask down.

The moment the person in front of her removed his mask, her eyes widened.

"K-Kabir?!"

Kabir Oberoi.

Her husband.

Dressed in black, wearing black gloves, with a gun in his hand.

His face carried a coldness Maya had never seen at home.

Kabir, too, fell silent for a few moments when he recognized her.

"Maya?"

Then his gaze shifted to her pink handbag.

"Wait a minute. What are you doing here?"

Maya looked at the gun in his hand, then at the dead body on the floor, and finally back at him.

"I was about to ask you the exact same question!"

"I'm here for work."

"At two in the morning? With a gun? Next to a dead body?"

Kabir clenched his jaw.

"Maya, please. This isn't the time for questions."

"Oh, really? Should I book an appointment for tomorrow morning? 'Dear husband, what time will you be available for your murder activities?'"

"MAYA!"

"Why are you shouting? At home, you practically have to beg me just to hand you the remote!"

Kabir closed his eyes and took a deep breath.

He had two options: catch the minister's killer or silence his wife.

For the first time in his life, the minister's case seemed like the easier job.

Suddenly, police sirens blared outside the mansion.

WEE-OOO! WEE-OOO!

Red and blue lights flashed through the windows.

A voice boomed through a loudspeaker.

"The police have surrounded the entire mansion! Everyone inside, raise your hands and come out!"

Maya's face went pale.

"Kabir… the police are here for you, aren't they?"

Kabir didn't answer.

"I KNEW IT! I knew something was wrong with your office!"

"Maya, be quiet."

"Are you a software engineer or a murder engineer hiding behind a software engineer's job title?!"

Kabir gave her such a sharp look that she immediately pressed her lips together.

Two seconds later, she spoke again.

"By the way… you look good in black."

Kabir stared at her.

"Seriously?"

"The situation is serious. My taste in men isn't!"

Kabir walked toward the window and peered outside. For the first time, genuine tension crossed his face.

"This is impossible…"

"What happened?"

"This wasn't supposed to happen. Nobody knew I was coming here."

"Then who told the police?"

Kabir turned to look at her.

"The person who invited me here."

Maya's smile disappeared.

"You were invited here?"

Kabir slowly nodded.

"I received an anonymous message asking me to meet the minister. By the time I arrived, he was already dead. And now the police have arrived at exactly the right moment."

A hundred questions raced through Maya's mind.

"So someone is framing you?"

"Exactly."

"Then you're not the killer?"

Kabir gave her a sharp look.

"Maya, do you seriously think I would—"

"Wait. First, tell me where the money came from for that expensive watch you gave me on our anniversary."

Kabir stared at her for two full seconds.

"I'm being framed for murder, and you're worried about a WATCH?"

"You gave me the gift. I'm asking questions. Accountability is important in a marriage!"

A voice echoed from outside.

"We'll be entering in five minutes!"

Kabir grabbed Maya's wrist and pulled her toward the corridor.

"Come on."

"Where?!"

"We need to find another way out."

"Past the police?!"

"No, Maya. We're going to roll out a red carpet and welcome them personally!"

Maya glared at him.

"You weren't this sarcastic before we got married."

"Before we got married, I didn't know your real personality."

"EXCUSE ME?! I'm perfectly innocent!"

They had barely reached the corner of the corridor when Maya's phone began ringing.

RING! RING!

Both of them stopped.

Kabir looked at her.

Maya glanced at the screen.

UNKNOWN NUMBER

"Turn it off," Kabir whispered.

"But—"

"Now!"

Maya moved to decline the call.

Then a message appeared.

She read it.

And suddenly, her hands went cold.

'Maya Oberoi, do not trust your husband. Kabir is hiding the truth about who killed the minister.'

Maya slowly raised her eyes toward Kabir.

"Kabir…"

He immediately took the phone from her hand.

The moment he read the message, his expression hardened.

"Who sent this?"

"How am I supposed to know? Unlike you, I don't attend secret meetings!"

Kabir reached for the phone, intending to delete the message, but Maya snatched it back.

"Excuse me! Is my phone part of your secret mission now, too?"

"Maya, listen to me. Whatever happens, don't leave my side."

He was looking directly into her eyes.

This time, there was no anger in his voice.

Only a kind of fear Maya had never seen on his face before.

Then another message arrived.

'If you want to know the real truth about your marriage, ask your husband what happened on the night you two got married.'

Maya felt as though she'd forgotten how to breathe.

Her marriage?

What could have happened on their wedding night that she didn't know about?

She looked at Kabir.

"Kabir… what happened on our wedding night?"

Kabir said nothing.

His fingers slowly tightened around Maya's phone.

And the familiar coldness returned to his eyes.

"We'll talk when we get home, Maya."

"Tell me now!"

"Not here."

"WHY?!"

Heavy footsteps echoed from the other end of the corridor.

The police were inside the mansion.

Kabir moved in front of Maya and stared at a dark doorway ahead.

Then he spoke quietly.

"Because the truth you're looking for, Maya… makes this entire murder investigation look like child's play."

He opened the door.

A man stood inside.

Dressed in a black suit.

A faint smile played on his lips.

And in his hand was a photograph.

The moment Kabir saw it, his face went completely blank.

Maya looked at the photograph.

It showed Kabir.

But the woman standing beside him…

Wasn't Maya.

Written on the back of the photograph were the words—

"WELCOME BACK, KABIR. YOUR REAL WIFE IS WAITING FOR YOU."

Maya slowly turned toward Kabir.

Then back to the photograph.

Then toward Kabir again.

"…KABIR OBEROI!"

Her voice echoed through the corridor.

"YOU COULDN'T HANDLE ONE MARRIAGE, SO YOU WENT AHEAD AND GOT YOURSELF ANOTHER ONE?!"

And for the first time in his life…

Kabir Oberoi had absolutely no answer for his wife.
