The Broken Engagement
The heavy wrought-iron gates of the Sterling estate swung open to reveal a world that existed entirely outside the frantic hustle of the city. Nestled against a jagged cliffside overlooking the endless, ink-blue expanse of the ocean, the mansion was a masterclass in modern architectural brutalism and sleek luxury. Towering floor-to-ceiling glass walls replaced traditional brick, bathing the sprawling, open-concept interior in sharp morning light. Polished concrete floors reflected the minimalist chandeliers hanging from soaring double-height ceilings, while a sweeping, helical grand staircase curved upward like a spine of pale stone and steel toward the mezzanine gallery.
In the center of this cavernous, silent expanse stood Lily Bennett.
She wore her uniform like a badge of honor—a crisp, fitted black dress with a pristine white Peter Pan collar, matching white cuffs, and a pleated apron tied neatly around her waist. Her auburn hair was swept up into an elegant, practical twist, a few soft tendrils framing her delicate features. In her hand, she held a feather duster, though she wasn't using it. Instead, she was staring down at her phone screen, reading the newly arrived digital offer document with a brilliant, incredulous smile.
The official email attachment glowed on her display: Sterling Group Holdings — Trial Period Employment Contract. It clearly outlined a $20,000 salary for her 3-day trial period, complete with full comprehensive health insurance coverage.
Lily let out a breathless, joyful laugh, pressing a hand against her chest. Freshly graduated with her bachelor's degree and facing a brick wall of rejection letters in a brutal job market, she had taken this position purely out of financial desperation. But $20,000 just for a trial period? Plus top-tier health insurance? It felt like a lifeline. She could pay off her student debt, help her parents at their clinic, and breathe for the first time in months. Whatever this billionaire's house throws at me, she thought, spinning the duster lightly, I am staying.
As she walked toward the massive open-concept kitchen to begin her rounds, a sharp, angry murmur drifted down from the upper gallery.
Lily paused, her boots halting against the polished concrete floor. She tilted her head, listening closely. The sound was coming from the master suite corridor overlooking the mezzanine. Quietly, carefully, she set the duster down on the marble kitchen island and crept toward the sweeping spiral staircase, her footsteps completely absorbed by the thick wool runners.
She reached the upper landing and slipped silently down the hallway. The heavy double doors to the primary bedroom were cracked open.
Inside, standing near the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, were two figures. One was Jason Sterling—the younger brother, whose bright copper-red curly hair and tailored grey suit gave him a sharp yet playful appearance. The other was a stunning, impeccably styled blonde woman draped in a vibrant pink tweed suit, her matching beret tilted at an arrogant angle. This was Bianca Sinclair, the woman whose name was whispered in high-society circles as Nathan Sterling’s untouchable fiancée.
"My brother just had a devastating accident, and you're already in another man's bed?" Jason's voice shook with white-hot fury, echoing off the minimalist glass walls. "You even sent him a video, Bianca? Have you completely lost your shame?"
Bianca let out a cold, artificial laugh, tossing her golden hair over her shoulder. She crossed her arms, her diamond bracelets clinking sharply. "Your brother is broken, Jason. He’s useless now—stuck in a motorized chair, rotting in this oversized glass cage. Why would I waste my youth tying myself to a cripple? If he had any sense, he’d break off the engagement himself and save me the trouble of coming back here."
Outside in the hallway, a heavy shadow fell across the threshold.
Lily froze. Rolling silently down the corridor came a sleek, state-of-the-art motorized wheelchair. Sitting in it was Nathan Sterling.
He was a striking, imposing figure even seated. His messy, ink-black hair fell slightly over a high, pale forehead, framing high cheekbones and a sharp jawline shadowed with stubble. His eyes—a startling, glacial grey-blue—were locked dead ahead with a chilling intensity. He wore a tailored black suit and a dark tie, his broad shoulders betraying the immense physical strength he had possessed before his world shattered.
Nathan did not flinch. He did not hesitate. He simply rolled past Lily, his expression an impenetrable mask of ice, and stopped right in the doorway.
"Then it's off," Nathan said. His voice was low, smooth as crushed velvet, and dropping with a lethal finality that made the air in the room drop ten degrees.
Bianca spun around, gasping slightly, though her shock quickly melted back into self-assured arrogance. She smoothed down her pink tweed skirt and stepped forward. "Nathan. Perfect timing. Honestly, I know you're obsessed with me. If I hadn't forced your hand with the cheating, you'd never have let me go. By coming here to end it in person, I'm actually doing you a favor."
Lily, standing a few feet away in the hallway, blinked rapidly. Wow, she thought, her eyes widening. That is some Olympic-level mental gymnastics.
Nathan stared at his ex-fiancée, his grey-blue eyes narrowing into twin shards of flint. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't yell. With agonizing slowness, he reached out a long, lean hand and tapped a sequence of buttons on the digital armrest of his wheelchair.
Down in the foyer, heavy boots thudded against the stone. Within seconds, two massive, suit-clad security guards materialized at the double doors.
"Throw her out," Nathan commanded.
"Let go of me!" Bianca shrieked as the guards grabbed her arms, hoisting her backward. "Nathan! You'd dare do this to me?! Nathan!"
Her protests faded down the hallway as she was hauled away toward the grand exit, her designer heels clicking frantically against the concrete floor.
Silence descended once more upon the expansive suite, broken only by the distant crash of ocean waves against the cliffs below.
Nathan pivoted his wheelchair around with practiced precision, the heavy tires turning silently. His glacial gaze landed directly on Lily, standing frozen in her maid's uniform.
He looked her up and down, his expression hardening into a dark, defensive scowl. "Who are you?"
Lily straightened her white collar, lifting her chin to meet his intimidating stare. "Hi, boss. I'm Lily Bennett, your new housekeeper. I start today."
Nathan’s jaw tightened. A bitter, caustic laugh escaped his lips. "I don't need a housekeeper. Get out."
Without waiting for a response, he whipped his chair around, pressing the joystick, and vanished down the hall toward his private study, leaving a wake of chilled air behind him.
Lily stared at the empty doorway, her mouth slightly agape. Wow, she thought, crossing her arms tightly over her apron. Rude. Whatever. He's disabled and his life just got upended. I'll let it slide.
Footsteps approached from behind, and Jason appeared, running a hand through his copper-red hair with an apologetic wince.
"Lily, right?" Jason asked, offering a sympathetic, disarming smile. "Don't listen to my brother. I sent you the offer. You can stay."
Lily looked down the hallway where Nathan had disappeared, then back at Jason. The memory of the $20,000 trial contract glowing on her phone flashed through her mind. She smiled brightly, her resilience flaring back to life.
"You got it," Lily said excitedly.
Jason let out a loud sigh of relief, patting her shoulder before jogging down the hall after his brother. "Come on, bro!" Jason called out as he caught up to Nathan. "You've scared away almost a hundred housekeepers already. Just let Lily try!"
From down the corridor, Nathan's cold, dismissive voice drifted back: "Do as you like. She’ll leave on her own in the next three days anyway."
