Mason / / Survival
At the beginning of the collapse… Somewhere in Connecticut a man named Mason and his family could hear the screeching and clawing of the revenants surrounding the entrance and exit of his house. His little sister held onto their dog named Star. Cars crashing outside intertwined with the cries of the hopeless. Knowing him and his family would have to flee soon, he ran upstairs to get supplies from the closet. Shoving all kinds of necessities in his bag, a first aid kit, ammunition for his pistol, MRE packs, and lastly a metal bat. Leaving some items hidden behind knowing after everything calms down he’d be able to come back and fortify his home.
Leaving his room in a rush to get back to his little sister and parents who were downstairs. Halfway down he heard something crash into the house, and the screaming of his family and Star barking. When he finally made it downstairs he saw a car with a newly turned revenant in the driver seat and a few revenants who made it into the house. Everything moved in slow motion for Mason as he saw the eyes of his family yearning for help. Knowing there was a slim chance of saving his family, but a higher chance of him surviving, he told Star to run outside as he ran upstairs abandoning his family. A few revenants followed him rushing and struggling to make it up the stairs, as he hopped out of a window landing on the roof of a car.
Mason whistled, calling Star to follow him, as he snuck around the parked cars and used the cries and screams of other survivors to not be seen. He made it out of his neighborhood, unfortunately for his bad sense of direction he made it into the city, where it was worse. The streets were filled with corpses, with a high amount of revenant activity. Revenants chased him forcing him to defend himself shooting the first few, and escaping trying to find somewhere to hide. A revenant blindsided him tackling him to the floor, he used the bat shoving it into the revenant’s mouth so it couldn’t bite him, as Star kept biting at the revenant’s leg which didn’t really have any effect. Finally mustering the strength he shoved the revenant to the side and saw a convenience store that was still open. He Called Star to follow him, now being chased by a small horde. Three survivors nearby saw Mason and followed behind him, successfully making it inside and closing the gates.
They had time to relax and think of a plan. Mason, not being so trustworthy hid his gun to make it seem as though he didn’t have much at his disposal and asked, “I don’t know what’s going on out there. But can I trust that we can survive together?”
Uncertainty was written all over their faces, but the one who seemed to be the leader responded, “Yeah, we don’t have a choice, it’s us against those things, and I’d rather not have any more enemies.”
Mason already picked up the energy that they were lying. He smiled and responded “Great, let me see if we could find a way out of here.”
He walked to the back of the convenience store and heard the group whispering, “We can use that one guy as bait to get out of here, it’s three of us and one of him.”
Mason shook his head knowing this would end in blood when it didn’t have to. Surviving is the only thing that matters.
Mason gripped his pistol behind his back as he walked over to them, the group’s gaze was unsettling… uncomfortable… untrustworthy. The moment the leader tried to speak, “Hey, I think we have a plan…”
Mason shot at the three of them, their filthy blood now covering the aisles of supplies. The screeching from the revenants became louder, with them now slightly cracking the windows. Mason thought quickly and dragged the remains of their corpses leaving a blood trail to the back of the store. He looked at Star and remembered the revenants never tried to eat her, so risking her life he told her to start barking while she was near the corpses. Mason opened up the gates, and the glass windows started breaking from the revenants getting more aggressive. He ran behind the cashier counter, out of sight of the revenants. After a few moments, the horde of revenants rushed to the back of the store straight to the corpses devouring the scraps, their claws soaked in blood… Their mouths consumed the flesh of the filth that tried to betray Mason.
While the revenants were now distracted with a feast, Mason ran out of the front of the store whistling for Star, who followed him out of the city now making his way back to his neighborhood.
Mason now standing in front of his house after everything had settled, was conflicted and thought to himself. Could I have saved my family? Trying to come to terms with what he did, Mason walked through the front door, seeing the revenant still stuck in the car growling and swinging at him, then turned to see the remains of his family who are now withered revenants. His mother… Father…Sister even while being dead still had that same look in their eyes struggling to even crawl towards him. The last thing they saw was a coward who left them behind. Mason couldn’t even cry at the sight of his family being mangled in such a manner. His vision grew blurry, his bones became weak. He fell to his knees and vomited, not being able to stomach his decision. After recollecting himself he ran back outside trying to find a different house to fortify. Knowing that if he stayed in that house it would haunt him. Making his way down the street, he noticed a group of people nailing the windows shut with wood. In the distance, there were sounds of car alarms going off, and the alarms grew closer and closer. Now in sight, he saw a huge Horde of revenants well over hundreds stampeding in his direction.
He began to run and Star followed, he screamed: “HEY LET ME IN, THERE’S A HORDE APPROACHING!!!”
They saw Mason and the horde closing in on the house. The group ran inside as one stood by the door, waving his arm and replying, “COME ON HURRY UP!”
Unfortunately for Mason, there was a revenant who was stuck under one of the cars and grabbed his leg, forcing him to fall. He kicked it off and realized he was scratched, he stumbled while still trying to run towards the house. But his heart began to race, his vision grew blurry and the voices of a woman started corrupting his mind.
“You are now mine, you serve me, you kill for me, you die for me…”
The voices became more aggressive, it became hard for him to have any thoughts of his own. Everything was moving in slow motion now he could see Star whimpering, and the door of opportunity now being shut in his face. He thought to himself, is this what my family felt before dying… a feeling of no hope, no chance of survival. With his last words, he told Star, “ Survive and run, go now!” Before he succumbed to the virus Screeching in agony, filled with anger and hate that no one could comprehend.
