CHAPTER ONE - THE RETURN

CHAPTER ONE - THE RETURN

You don't hear the town before you see it.

You feel it - like a hand you thought you escaped, closing around your ribs again.

The highway spits you out at the edge of a place you swore you'd never breathe in again. Same cracked asphalt. Same sunburnt signs. Same air that tastes like dust and old memories. You step out of the car and the heat hits you like a warning.

You whisper it under your breath, almost afraid the town might hear you.

"What am I doing here."

You don't have an answer.

Not yet.

But something in you knows this isn't an accident. You didn't come back because you wanted to. You came back because something unfinished dragged you here by the spine.

The wind shifts.

A church bell rings somewhere far off - too early, too empty, too familiar.

And suddenly the past isn't the past anymore. It's standing right in front of you.

You walk.

Every step feels like stepping into a memory you tried to bury. The corner store with the flickering light. The alley where you learned how fast a heartbeat can race. The old brick wall where you carved your name like you were trying to prove you existed.

Nothing changed.

Everything changed.

You stop at the crosswalk where the town first broke you.

Where you first learned what fear tastes like.

Where you first felt God watching you - not judging, not saving, just witnessing.

A car rolls by slow, the driver staring like they recognize you but can't place the ghost you've become. You keep walking, head down, heart loud.

Then you see it.

The place you promised yourself you'd never stand in front of again.

Your chest tightens.

Your hands shake.

Your breath catches like it's trying to run without you.

You whisper again, but this time it's not confusion.

It's realization.

"I'm back."

And the town seems to answer - not with words, but with a feeling that crawls up your spine.

This time, you're not leaving until the truth comes out.
