Chapter 1: The Whispering Compass
The rain over Oakhaven smelled of ozone and ancient iron. In the dusty corner of his late grandfather’s clockwork shop, Silas ran his calloused fingers across a polished brass sphere no larger than a plum. It had no needles, no dial, and no visible seam, yet whenever he touched it, a faint humming resonated through the soles of his feet.
"You should sell that junk, Silas," barked Master Elric, leaning over the counter with his spectacle-perched nose. "It won't pay the winter rent, and it certainly won't buy us fresh coal."
"It's not junk," Silas murmured.
As if in response to his voice, the brass sphere clicked. Fine geometric lines lit up along its surface, glowing with a soft, azure light. The brass spun inward, unraveling like a metallic rose, and projected a luminous, flickering map onto the rain-streaked shop window.
The map didn't show the local trade routes or the surrounding kingdoms. It displayed a sprawling, forgotten continent shrouded in silver mist, marked with a single glowing glyph deep within the Whispering Wilds.
Silas looked up from the light, his heart hammering against his ribs. The old stories his grandfather told him weren't fairy tales after all. Aethelgard was real—and the compass was calling.
