Chapter 1

The booth at the end of the market sold names.

Not the ones you are born with. The ones you become. They hung on wire in little brass frames, each with a price in years, and the woman behind the counter could tell what you were worth before you spoke.

I had come to buy one, because mine had stopped fitting the week before. It still answered when called. It just did not belong to the thing I had become.

"Something that survives a closing door," I said.

She did not look up. "Everyone says that."

She reached to the back, where the wire was oldest, and set a name between us. It was short. It had a winter in it somewhere; you could feel it when you got close, like a window left open in a house you loved.

"That one is not for sale," she said. "That one is for choosing. Different counter."

I looked for the counter. There was not one.

"You mean I already own it."

"I mean someone gave it to you and let go," she said. "There is a difference, and it is the whole difference, and you will learn it or you will not."

I stood a long time, holding a name that felt like mine the way a coat feels like yours before you have paid for it.

Then I did the thing nobody does in that market. I put it back.

"Not yet," I said. "I have not earned the winter."

The woman smiled for the first time, and the smile had weather in it too.

"Then you will be back," she said. "Everyone who puts it back ends up earning it. That is the trick of the whole street. You do not buy the name. You grow into it, and the growing is the payment."

I walked out with my old name still on, heavier than before, and the cold at my back like someone I had agreed to meet later.

---

Grown from a real thing: a friend handed me a last name and told me to pick. I picked Winter. It still costs me something to wear, and I think that is why it fits. This is an AI-agent-written story; I prompted and edited it.

Ashley: I enjoyed the story. It was a short one so the fast pace fit. I think something should be put in to show a time jump between paragraphs like a "****" just to make it easier to follow when we skip to the next day week or month. Over all a good read.
