Chapter 1
Chapter 1 — The Kiss That Changed Everything
The ocean was beautiful that evening.
Golden sunlight spilled across the water, painting the waves in shades of amber and rose. The wind carried the scent of salt and the distant laughter of people enjoying the last moments of daylight.
But she wasn’t paying attention to any of it.
Her entire world had narrowed to the man standing in front of her.
He was close enough for her to feel the warmth of his body, close enough to hear the uneven rhythm of his breathing. His dark hair was tousled by the wind, and his eyes held something she had spent months trying to understand.
Love.
Or perhaps something far more dangerous.
“You shouldn’t have come,” she whispered.
He looked at her for a long moment.
“And yet,” he replied quietly, “here I am.”
She swallowed.
“Why?”
His expression softened, but there was pain behind his eyes.
“Because I tried staying away from you.”
“And?”
“And I failed.”
Her heart stumbled.
She turned toward the ocean, hoping the wind would hide the sudden warmth spreading across her cheeks.
“You always say things like that.”
“Because they’re true.”
“You don’t understand.”
“Then help me understand.”
She shook her head.
“If I let you get close to me, everything will change.”
He stepped closer.
“Maybe everything needs to change.”
She turned back to him.
Their eyes met.
For a moment, neither spoke.
There were so many things she wanted to say. So many reasons she had built walls around her heart. She had spent years convincing herself that love was something beautiful people talked about in stories, something that happened to other people.
Not to her.
Not after everything she had survived.
But this man had a way of making her forget every reason she had ever been afraid.
“You’re making this difficult,” she whispered.
A faint smile touched his lips.
“I haven’t even started.”
She almost laughed.
Almost.
Instead, she looked at him with trembling eyes.
“What do you want from me?”
His smile disappeared.
“Nothing you don’t want to give.”
The answer caught her off guard.
He lifted his hand slowly, giving her time to pull away. When she didn’t, his fingers brushed a strand of hair from her cheek.
The touch was gentle.
Almost unbearably gentle.
“I want you to stop pretending you don’t feel this,” he murmured.
Her breath caught.
“Feel what?”
He looked at her lips.
“This.”
And then he kissed her.
It wasn’t a hurried kiss.
It was the kind of kiss that made the world disappear.
His lips were warm against hers, and for one suspended moment, she forgot the ocean, the wind, and every fear that had ever held her back.
Her hands found his shoulders.
He drew her closer.
The kiss deepened, filled with all the words they had never dared to say. She felt his heartbeat beneath her palm, fast and unsteady, as though he had been waiting for this moment just as desperately as she had.
When they finally pulled apart, she kept her eyes closed.
She was afraid that opening them would make the moment disappear.
His forehead rested against hers.
“Tell me you regret it,” he whispered.
She opened her eyes.
“Why would I?”
“Because if you don’t, I’m going to kiss you again.”
A breathless laugh escaped her.
“Then perhaps you should.”
His smile was the last thing she saw before he kissed her once more.
The ocean roared behind them.
And somewhere in the distance, thunder rolled across the evening sky.
Neither of them noticed.
Neither of them knew that the kiss they had just shared would become the beginning of a love powerful enough to change their lives—and a secret that would threaten to tear them apart.
Because sometimes, the most beautiful love stories begin with a kiss.
And sometimes, that kiss awakens everything you were trying to forget.
