Chapter 1: The Succession Clause
The crisp autumn air of the coffee shop did nothing to cool the sudden panic rising in Maya’s chest. On the polished screen of her laptop, a leaked press release from her family’s multi-billion-dollar hotel conglomerate stared back at her.
“CEO to Step Down: Succession Hinges on Stable Management and Family Values.”
In the elite world of high society, "family values" was corporate code for a stable relationship—something Maya, a notoriously independent branding director, lacked. If she wanted to inherit her father's empire, she needed a serious, long-term partner by tomorrow night’s annual charity gala.
"You're staring at that screen like it owes you money," a low, smooth voice remarked from the adjacent booth.
Maya looked up, her gaze landing on Ethan Vance. He was the city's most brilliant—and most cynical—corporate restructuring attorney, known for fixing massive scandals while keeping his own life entirely under wraps. He looked effortlessly sharp in a charcoal-grey suit, his dark hair slightly messy, and his piercing blue eyes holding a look of lazy amusement.
"I'm staring at my impending professional execution," Maya sighed, running a hand through her hair. "Unless you happen to know a respectable, completely cooperative man who wants to pretend to be deeply in love with me for the next three months."
Ethan slowly set his espresso cup down, the amusement in his eyes sharpening into something calculating. He slid out of his booth and took the seat directly across from her, his large frame instantly making the small table feel incredibly intimate.
"Actually," Ethan murmured, his voice dropping to a gravelly, quiet baritone that sent a strange prickle of heat down her neck. "I might have a solution. My firm is bidding for your father's upcoming European expansion contract. The board thinks I'm too detached, too unanchored to handle a legacy project."
Maya’s breath hitched as she realized where he was going. "You want to fake a relationship."
"I want a mutually beneficial corporate merger," Ethan corrected smoothly, leaning forward until he was just inches away across the table. His eyes locked onto hers with a sudden, intense focus. "We play the part of a deeply devoted couple. You get the CEO chair, I get the expansion contract, and we part ways amicably when the papers are signed."
"And how do we convince my family?" Maya whispered, her pulse fluttering at his sudden proximity. "My father can spot a corporate transactional play from a mile away."
Ethan reached across the small table, his large, warm hand sliding over hers. His fingers calloused and firm, deliberately tangling with hers in a slow, possessive grip that made her chest tighten.
"We practice," Ethan breathed, his gaze dropping to her lips for a fraction of a second before meeting her eyes again. "Starting right now."
