Chapter 1

THE CURSE OF UMUOCHA VILLAGE

Chapter One: The Girl Born on the Night of Death

The morning sun rose slowly over Umuocha village, spreading its golden rays across the red-earth pathways, thatched houses and enormous palm trees.

The village was already awake.

Women hurried to the stream with clay pots balanced on their heads. Farmers prepared their hoes for the day's work, while children ran barefoot through the dusty streets, laughing and singing.

It was an ordinary morning.

Or so everyone thought.

"Amara! Amara! Are you deaf?"

A woman's angry voice echoed from a small mud house near the village square.

"Ehn, Mama! I'm coming!" eighteen-year-old Amara answered.

She hurried out, tying her wrapper around her waist.

Her mother, Nneka, stood beside the cooking fire, stirring a pot of soup.

"How many times have I called you? Do you want the food to finish before you remember that you have a mother?"

Amara laughed.

"Mama, you know I'm your only daughter. Who else will you disturb if not me?"

Nneka shook her head.

"Your mouth will put you into trouble one day."

Amara smiled and picked up a basket of vegetables.

"Mama, I'm going to the stream with Ifeoma. I'll be back soon."

"Don't go near the old forest."

Amara stopped.

"Again, Mama? Why do you always warn me about that forest?"

Nneka's expression suddenly changed.

"Because I said so!"

Amara stared at her mother.

There was something strange about the way she reacted whenever the old forest was mentioned.

"Okay, Mama. I won't go there."

She walked away, but her mind remained troubled.

---

At the village square, a crowd had gathered beneath the giant iroko tree.

The talking drums were silent, and the elders sat in a semicircle.

This was unusual.

Amara approached her friend, Ifeoma.

"What is happening here?"

Ifeoma quickly pulled her closer.

"You haven't heard?"

"Heard what?"

"The king has summoned everybody. Something terrible happened last night."

Amara's eyes widened.

"What happened?"

Before Ifeoma could answer, a loud gong sounded three times.

GONG!

GONG!

GONG!

The crowd immediately became silent.

An elderly man stepped forward. His name was Chief Nwafor, the most powerful elder in Umuocha.

"People of Umuocha!" he announced. "Our ancestors have spoken, and the palace must obey."

Murmurs spread through the crowd.

Chief Nwafor continued.

"For eighteen years, our kingdom has enjoyed peace. But the gods are no longer pleased with us. The sacred river has begun to dry, and the royal oracle has delivered a warning."

An old woman covered her mouth.

"What warning?" someone shouted.

The chief raised his walking stick.

"Before the next full moon, one young maiden must be presented at the royal palace for the ancient ceremony."

Fear immediately filled the square.

Amara turned towards Ifeoma.

"What does that mean?"

Ifeoma shook her head.

"I don't know, but I don't like the sound of it."

---

That evening, Amara returned home earlier than usual.

She found her mother sitting outside, staring into the distance.

"Mama?"

Nneka didn't answer.

"Mama, are you okay?"

Her mother suddenly grabbed her hand.

"Amara, listen to me carefully."

Amara became frightened.

"What is it?"

"If anything happens in this village, you must never enter the royal palace."

Amara frowned.

"Why would I enter the palace?"

Nneka's eyes filled with tears.

"Promise me!"

"Mama, you're frightening me."

"Promise me, Amara!"

Amara slowly nodded.

"I promise."

But neither of them noticed the old man standing behind the nearby palm tree.

He had been watching their conversation.

And when Nneka finally entered the house, he whispered something that would change everything.

"The king's daughter is still alive."

---

That night, deep inside the royal palace, King Okafor sat alone in his chamber.

Before him lay an old photograph of a beautiful young woman holding a newborn baby.

His hands trembled.

"Eighteen years," he whispered.

Suddenly, the palace doors opened.

Chief Nwafor entered and bowed.

"My king."

The king quickly covered the photograph.

"What is it?"

"The girl has been found."

King Okafor froze.

"Are you certain?"

"Yes, my king. Her name is Amara. She lives with a woman called Nneka."

For several seconds, the king said nothing.

Then he stood up slowly.

"Bring her to the palace."

Chief Nwafor hesitated.

"My king, what if she discovers the truth?"

The king turned towards him.

His expression was cold.

"Then we must ensure she never discovers it."

Ashley: I enjoyed the story. It was a short one so the fast pace fit. I think something should be put in to show a time jump between paragraphs like a "****" just to make it easier to follow when we skip to the next day week or month. Over all a good read.
